The North is changing at an unprecedented rate as industrial development and the climate crisis disrupt not only the environment but also long-standing relationships to the land and traditional means ...of livelihood. Memory and Landscape: Indigenous Responses to a Changing North explores the ways in which Indigenous peoples in the Arctic have adapted to challenging circumstances, including past cultural and environmental changes. In this beautifully illustrated volume, contributors document how Indigenous communities in Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland, and Siberia are seeking ways to maintain and strengthen their cultural identity while also embracing forces of disruption. Indigenous and non-Indigenous contributors bring together oral history and scholarly research from disciplines such as linguistics, archaeology, and ethnohistory. With an emphasis on Indigenous place names, this volume illuminates how the land—and the memories that are inextricably tied to it—continue to define Indigenous identity. The perspectives presented here also serve to underscore the value of Indigenous knowledge and its essential place in future studies of the Arctic. We assess the impact of China's bilateral political relations with three main trading partners—the US, Germany, and the UK—on current account balances and exchange rates, over the 1960Q1–2022Q4 ...period. Relying on the lag-augmented VAR approach with time-varying Granger causality tests, we find that political relationships with China strongly matter in explaining the dynamics of current accounts and exchange rates, supporting the “trade follows the flag” view. Such relationships cause the evolution of the exchange rate (except in the UK) and the current account; these causal links being time-varying for the US and the UK and robust over the entire period for Germany. These findings suggest that policymakers should account for bilateral political relationships to understand the global macroeconomic consequences of political tensions.

The Sino-Saudi political relations has continued to develop between November 2012 and the beginning of 2016, but it is remarkable that most studies focus on the economic aspect of this relations, ...without shedding sufficient light on the political aspect. Therefore, this paper analyzes the scale and achievements of the two historic visits of Crown Prince Salman bin Abdul Aziz to Beijing in 2014 and President Xi Jinping to Riyadh in 2016, to study the development of political relations between the two countries and its main influencing factors, focusing on the strategic vision of President Xi in foreign policy, and the positioning of Saudi Arabia in China’s strategic deployment.
Changes in Indonesia's socio-political require Islamic organizations to adapt to these changes, some of them have managed to survive and exist and died. Revivalism in Islam is a demand from the long ...history of Islam's journey, which has crossed the geographical and cross-cultural boundaries of Islamic society. The survival and death of the Islamic movement is highly dependent on the ability of Muslims adapts to the socio-political landscape, like the case of the Naqsyabandiyah Tarekat in Rokan Hulu-Riau, the existence of the movement survives because it is able to adapt to the socio-cultural system of the local community. This study shows there is an interaction between Islam and the culture of the community and influences each other. The influence that occurs is sometimes positive and negative. The influence of Islam in the local socio-political landscape can be seen from the widespread use of Islamic symbols, as well as various local government policies that adopt Islamic values.
The coincidence of the two governments Qara Khitai of Kerman and Hormuz rulers during the Seventh century A.H and their proximity to each other established political relations between the rulers of ...the two local governments. Relationships that led to numerous factors such as financial and commercial interests, attempts to expand the territory, gain independence, etc., were hostile or friendly. The questions that this research seeks to answers: is the Qara Khitai of Kerman coinciding with which branch of the Hormuz rulers, and how were the political relationships between these two local governments? 2. Where did these political relations finally lead? By analyzing library resources with a descriptive-analytical approach, one can conclude that the Qara-Khitai government of Kerman was one of those local governments that was established by the efforts of Borāq Hājib in about 1223 A.D (619 A.H.), and preserved over the course of more than eight decades of its existence the preconditions for the political role of the rulers of Qara-Khitai government in the territory of neighbors such as Hormuz rulers. On the other hand, the old and new Hormuz rulers, although dissatisfied with the political interference of the rulers of the Qara Khitai of Kerman, secured their sovereignty with the use of political tolerance and payment of salary.
This study investigates the effect of bilateral political relations on cross-border M&As in the context of Sino-US strategic competition. Based on 996 cross-border M&A cases of Chinese enterprises ...over the period 2001-2020, our econometric analysis reveals that, in general, Sino-US strategic competition reduces the completion rate of Chinese enterprises' cross-border M&As. This effect is stronger for M&As in strategic industries and targets owned by government, suggesting direct government intervention. Moreover, M&As with higher investment irreversibility or in B2C industries are more exposed to this negative impact, suggesting investor and consumer caution with declining political affinity. However, in the long run, such a competition contrarily contributes to the improvement of the performance of Chinese enterprises. These findings challenge policymakers and scholars with a new emerging M&A theoretical framework regarding institutional uncertainty and risk.
High levels of vaccine hesitancy are an obstacle to the successful management of the Covid‐19 pandemic. In this research, we identify psychological correlates of reluctance to personally receive a ...Covid‐19 vaccine, with a focus on intergroup relations. Insights are based on two survey studies conducted in traditionally underresearched settings, the Philippines (N = 289) and Pakistan (N = 275). Results show that trust in vaccines, concerning both the vaccine's efficacy and the vaccine's safety, was associated with willingness to use the vaccine. Perceptions of trust were related to intergroup psychology, such that vaccine donations from political opponents rather than allies were trusted less. This meant that in the Philippines, there was a preference to use vaccines from the United States over those from China, although the pattern was less clear in Pakistan. Having said this, the highest levels of trust and willingness to use vaccines in both countries were for vaccines offered by the World Health Organization (WHO). Last but not least, a perception of global common fate of all humans in the face of the pandemic was positively associated with willingness to get vaccinated, even when controlling for concerns about the vaccine's efficacy and safety. Implications are discussed in relation to intergroup psychology and public health management.
