Wearied by his life as an administrator at the Duke’s court in Weimar, in 1786 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe departed unannounced in the middle of the night for what had been the destination of his ...imagination since childhood: Italy. His extended stay there dramatically affected his views of art, architecture, prose, poetry, and science. When he returned to Germany and Weimar, Goethe’s experiences translated into his life and work in ways that influenced countless others as they developed Germany’s own brand of high culture.
The Spell of Italy: Vacation, Magic, and the Attraction of Goethe tracks the peculiar space Italy occupies in the cultural consciousness of German writers by reconsidering the Italian journeys of Goethe and Winckelmann and the legacy of those journeys in the works of Heine, Nietzsche, Freud, Mann, Carossa, and Bachmann. Author Richard Block contests previous assumptions about Italy as a place to encounter classical culture and creative rebirth. His study examines the degree to which Germany’s literary and cultural traditions appropriated a phantasmic Italy, showing how Winckelmann’s art history and Goethe’s Italian journey predisposed later writers to search for an aesthetic ideal in Italy that did not exist, and how their search for this absent ideal eventually resulted in disillusionment and deception. Building on previous work on Goethe, literary theory, and cultural history, The Spell of Italy offers compelling new ways of understanding Germany’s fascination with Italy from the eighteenth century to its troubled political history of the twentieth century.
Using one ray of light to encode another ray of light is highly desirable because information in optical format can be directly transferred from one beam to another without converting back to the ...electronic format. One key medium to accomplish such an amazing task is photoswitchable molecules. Using bis(dithiazole)ethene that can be photoswitched between its ring‐open and ring‐closed states quantitatively with excellent fatigue resistance and high thermal stability, it is shown that quantitative photoreversibility allowed the photoswitching light to control other light travelling through the photoswitchable medium, a phenomenon of transferring information encoded in one light ray to others, thus imparting photo‐optical modulation on the orthogonal light beam.

The Crimean peninsula in the Black Sea, rich in history and charm, is of great geostrategic importance. This leads to political conflicts time and again. But what is everyday life like in Crimea ...beyond the discourses about law, borders and war? What do local intellectuals think about the situation today? Can Geopoetry help to counteract the current crisis? Tatjana Hofmann's ethnographic long-term observation explores these questions. Her poetic essay, illustrated with magnificent photographs by Alexander Barbuch, transcends the usual boundaries of genre and searches for perspectives far removed from common patterns of interpretation. Tatjana Hofmann, a Slavist and author, lives in Zurich. "Krim – Erkundungen am Rand Europas" continues her 2015 novel "Sewastopologia" continues.
Over the past years a substantial amount of studies has indicated that travel satisfaction is affected by a wide range of elements such as trip duration, travel mode choice and travel-related ...attitudes. However, what is less explored is that this travel satisfaction is not only an outcome of travel-related preferences and choices, but that travel satisfaction can also be a predictor of travel-related components. In this conceptual paper we tend to fill the gaps in the existing − albeit rather fragmented − literature concerning travel satisfaction. We provide an overview of the elements explaining travel satisfaction, and possible outcomes of travel satisfaction, with a focus on (i) subjective well-being, (ii) travel mode choice, (iii) travel-related attitudes, and (iv) the residential location. Furthermore, we suggest a continuous cyclical process including the four above mentioned elements in which travel satisfaction plays an essential role; a process which can result in the formation of travel habits.
This paper explores differences in the temperature and precipitation in which individuals were found to ride within a large naturalistic riding data set. The data included in this analysis describe ...approximately 363,000 miles of riding by 98 participants. Trips include travel in over 40 states, as individuals rode for both transportation and pleasure. GPS location data from the motorcycles, combined with historic weather information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration databases, permitted the investigation of gender, motorcycle type, and installation locations, and their relationship to observed weather conditions during rides. Analyses showed motorcyclists prefer to ride in temperatures between 48°F and 82°F and under dry conditions when possible. If one lives in an area that experiences those temperatures year-round, then it can be expected that trips will continue year-round. If a rider lives in an area with distinctive seasons, those months where the temperature stays within that average range will contain the most rides.
Cyrano de Bergerac’s comic novel L’Autre Monde (1657) is known for its innovative philosophical discourse. Threatened by the catholic inquisition and in order to avoid the censorship of 17th century ...France, Cyrano de Bergerac had to imagine a way to present his text as less provocative. In order to achieve this, he integrates his philosophical ideas in a fictional journey to the empires of the moon and of the sun where everything appears to be the opposite of the human civilisation on Earth. However, the fiction is more than a framework for the philosophical discourse. It appears that the fantastic and futuristic aspects of the civilisation on the moon – that Cyrano de Bergerac imagines long before the invention of these two genres – are a component part of Cyrano’s main philosophical theses.
Abstract During his expedition to Russia in 1829, Alexander von Humboldt was almost constantly accompanied by government security forces. Studies in the past have usually seen this escort as an attempt to control the liberal researcher. This article shows that his armed company was probably meant to protect Humboldt rather than to supervise him. Therefore, the article analyzes potential threats on the route of the expedition, how the escort adapted to them and how far the guards would have been able to control him anyway. The most important sources are Humboldt's written communication, the travel account by his friend Gustav Rose and the recently published diaries of his companion Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg.
