'A Place at the Altar' illuminates a previously underappreciated dimension of religion in ancient Rome: the role of priestesses in civic cult. Demonstrating that priestesses had a central place in ...public rituals and institutions, Meghan DiLuzio emphasizes the complex, gender-inclusive nature of Roman priesthood.
Few pre-modern empires had an impact on their subjects comparable to that of the Roman Empire. Over time, being Roman could mean many different things, e.g. Latin speakers under barbarian rule, ...subjects of the Byzantine empire or Christians in post-Roman Syria. This volume explores the changes Roman identity underwent in most of the former provinces of the empire between c. 400 and c. 1000, offering the first comprehensive overview on this topic.
The hoard found in 2018 at Skypche in the western region of Ukraine included seventy Roman denarii of the 1st and 2nd century AD (Trajan to Commodus) and a presumably silver ring. The hoard is ...typical for the territory of Ukraine occupied in the later phases of the Roman period and the Migration period by the people of the Chernyakhiv culture identified with a federation of Gothic and non-Gothic peoples under the Gothic leadership. Among the coins in the hoard was one barbarian imitation of a Roman denarius and seven denarii weighing of less than 2 g identified initially as of official issue. Some of the lightweight denarii could be copies of Roman denarii. It is not unlikely that these copies were manufactured within the Barbaricum.
This paper presents the results of field surveys undertaken in 1987 and 1989-97 in the immediate vicinity of the Roman civitas capital of Isurium Brigantum (Aldborough, North Yorks). It presents the ...Roman finds from the survey, providing quantified analyses of pottery and ceramic building material as well as catalogues of the other artefacts collected. These studies provide new evidence for the history of the town and form the basis for a discussion of the development of the landscape in its environs, complementing other recent work at the site.
This paper presents an integrated multi-analytical documentation of a bronze vessel discovered in a 2nd century Roman military fort from ancient Dacia. The process involved 3D digitization, X-ray and ...hyperspectral imaging, and molecular, elemental, and structural analysis using Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results of the study revealed the composition of the vessel metal and of the interior coating and the state of conservation through metal quality, internal cracks and corrosion compounds mapping. A 3D virtual reconstruction of the original aspect is also proposed based on the digitization and metal characterization results.
Let D=(V(D),A(D)) be a finite, simple digraph and k a positive integer. A function f:V(D)→{0,1,2,…,k+1} is called a k-Roman dominating function (for short, k-RDF) if f(AN−v)≥|AN−(v)|+k for any vertex ...v∈V(D), where AN−(v)={u∈N−(v):f(u)≥1} and AN−v=AN−(v)∪{v}. The weight of a k-RDF f is ω(f)=∑v∈V(D)f(v). The minimum weight of any k-RDF on D is the k-Roman domination number, denoted by γkR(D). For k=2 and k=3, we call them the double Roman domination number and the triple Roman domination number, respectively. In this paper, we presented some general bounds and the Nordhaus–Gaddum bound on the k-Roman domination number and we also determined the bounds on the k-Roman domination number related to other domination parameters, such as domination number and signed domination number. Additionally, we give the exact values of γkR(Pn) and γkR(Cn) for the directed path Pn and directed cycle Cn.
