Marginal annotations by Policarpo Palermi, a jurist fom Verona, can be found in a volume of Torello Saraina’s De origine et amplitudine civitatis Veronae, published in 1540 and now kept in Verona ...public library. In this paper we present an edition and study of these marginal notations (additions of Roman inscriptions and corrections of Saraina’s edition and localizations).
The re-conquest of southern Scotland by the army of the Emperor Antoninus Pius was a political act intended to secure his position on the throne. For this event, he took the acclamation 'Conqueror'. ...His soldiers erected large stone slabs to mark their construction of the new frontier and decorated several with triumphal scenes. In these sculptures the soldiers portrayed themselves not only as victorious conquerors but also engineers and builders, celebrating not only the success of their emperor but their own community of soldiers.
Even in scientific circles, some defend the idea that the city of Silves originated from a Roman urban settlement that prevailed during the High Middle Ages and resulted in the great Islamic Xilb. To this assumption contributed, at first, a certain romantic historiography and, in the last decades of the 20th century, some inferences based on archaeological findings that we would like to study, adding new data obtained from recent archaeological works. We will go through the various currents of opinion, usually approached only in the context of study of the origins of the Islamic city, focusing on some data that led to the thesis of the Roman occupation of the site of the actual city, namely a Roman inscription which mentions the existence of a temple dedicated to Neptune in Silves.
The paper discusses the notion of Frisian presence in both the Roman Britain and the Roman army. It investigates the available Latin sources, which provide us with certain amount of information ...concerning Frisians’ role, significance and distribution during the period of the Roman ruling. Finally, the author tries, on the basis of the available resources, to draw some conclusions regarding the perception of Frisians by both Romans and Brits. All the analyzed materials are taken from the extensive database of the Roman Inscriptions that are to be found in Britain, which is an invaluable source of knowledge of the military tradition of the Roman Empire and the units serving on the Isles. The paper aims at showing the importance of Frisian participation in both Roman invasion and the Adventus Saxonum. It tries to shed a new light on the perception of not only Frisians but all the Germanic tribes.
In 1878 Villa-Amil y Castro published the first printed catalogue of the manuscript collection of the old Colegio de San Ildefonso at the University of Alcalá de Henares. In his work Villa-Amil followed closely the catalogues produced earlier in 1745 and again in 1800. More recently, Paul Oskar Kristeller has focused his interest on the humanistic manuscripts of this collection, as this library becomes essential in the study of humanism in the hispanic universities during the early Renaissance. From this point of view it is necessary a closer examination to the manuscripts belonging to the old Colegio de San Ildefonso. For example, volume MSS 133 contains eleven manuscritpts from the mid 15th century among them a unique testimony of a Latin composition by Alfonso de Palencia. The object of this paper is a more detailed bibliographical description of these eleven manuscripts in UCM BH MSS 133.
The article reviews the principal surviving examples of inscriptions on mosaic pavements and wall-paintings in Roman Britain. For some of these it makes tentative suggestions towards new readings or ...seeks to adjudicate between the conflicting readings of earlier commentators. The eleven inscriptions examined belong to different classes: signatures, dedications, good luck messages, labels, and literary or pseudo-literary glosses upon figure-scenes. The existence of the inscriptions implies that viewers were expected to be literate, or at least that being literate, if not actually well-educated, was socially important.
