Sergius of Reshaina (d. 536) is a major figure in the history of the Syriac reception of Aristotle’s logic. He studied philosophy and medicine in the late 5th century in Alexandria with the famous ...Ammonius Hermeiou, whose lectures formed the basis for Sergius’ main philosophical work, his extensive Commentary on the Categories. In this treatise, Sergius adapted for his Christian audience the Alexandrian educational model and exegesis of Aristotle logical writings and in this way influenced subsequent centuries of Aristotelian studies in Syriac.

O tium ist einer der schillerndsten Begriffe der lateinischen Sprache. Sein Bedeutungsspektrum umfasst zahlreiche ambivalente Komponenten, die es erschweren, seine Bedeutung zu fassen. Häufig wird ...otium im Deutschen mit "Muße" übersetzt, doch gleichbedeutend sind die beiden Begriffe keineswegs. Hiervon ausgehend werden als Ergebnisse einer semantischen Studie die grundlegenden Bedeutungskomponenten von otium herausgearbeitet und sein Bedeutungsspektrum strukturiert beschrieben. Dabei nimmt Franziska C. Eickhoff das gesamte semantische Feld von otium in den Blick und arbeitet die Bedeutungskomponenten heraus, die allen Verwendungsmöglichkeiten als Kernbedeutungen gemeinsam sind. So skizziert sie mit Ansätzen der kognitiven Semantik das mentale Konzept von otium und vergleicht es mit dem Konzept von Muße.
Bestimmte Räume tragen durch ihre Eigenschaften dazu bei, dass in ihnen Muße leicht erfahrbar wird. Dazu zählen z.B. Bibliotheken, Museen und Gärten. Auch die Antike und frühe Neuzeit kennen Räume, ...die so "funktionieren". Zudem geben literarische Quellen Aufschluss darüber, wie sie als Mußeräume erfahren wurden. Die Autoren dieses Bandes widmen sich ausgewählten Räumen der Antike und frühen Neuzeit und gehen der Frage nach, ob und warum wir von ihnen als Mußeräumen sprechen können. Dabei nehmen sie architektonische und funktionale Eigenschaften dieser Räume in den Blick, die diese als Mußeräume prädestinieren könnten, und arbeiten in literarischen Darstellungen die sprachlichen Mittel heraus, mit denen die Inszenierung als Mußeräume gelingt. An Werke der neulateinischen Literatur wird zudem die Frage gerichtet, wie die Antike selbst einen Mußeraum eröffnet, wenn sie in späteren Texten rezipiert wird. Im Fokus stehen das griechische Theater, die Bibliothek, die römische Villa, der locus amoenus, der Garten und die Landschaft.
Das deutsche Wort Muße ist nicht ohne weiteres übersetzbar. Umso schwieriger gestaltet sich die Erforschung der Muße in anderen kulturellen Kontexten. Der Sammelband illustriert die semantischen ...Probleme des Mußebegriffs innerhalb der gegebenen Wortfelder im Deutschen, Griechischen, Lateinischen, Englischen, Spanischen, Französischen und Tschechischen sowie in Bangla und Urdu. Die hier versammelten Aufsätze sind hauptsächlich von Literaturwissenschaftlern, aber auch von Vertretern der Psychologie, der Linguistik und der Theologie verfasst. Sie betten ihre Studien zur Muße in verschiedenen Kulturkreisen und Epochen in die Betrachtung des historischen und kulturellen Umfelds ein und fördern so das Beziehungsgeflecht zwischen Mußediskursen, Verunglimpfungen des Müßiggangs und der Verhandlung von sozialem Stand und ökonomischem Status zutage. Darüber hinaus erörtert ein Beitrag aus der Psychologie eine empirische Untersuchung, die Assoziationen von Mußebegriffen analysiert.

Peter Philipp Riedl untersucht innerhalb dieses Rahmens einer temporären Freiheit von beruflichen Verpflichtungen konkrete Ausprägungen urbaner Muße, die in der Italienischen Reise insbesondere aus Verona, Padua, Venedig, Rom, Neapel und Palermo geschildert werden. Übergänge von Aktivität und Passivität, von durchaus anstrengender, aber selbstbestimmter Arbeit und Genuss werden ebenso analysiert wie unterschiedliche Muster kontemplations- und erlebnisorientierter Muße. The first full in-depth analysis and interpretation of Plutarch’s Regum et imperatorum apophthegmata in its entirety as a literary piece of art. Plutarch’s Regum et imperatorum apophthegmata (Sayings ...of Kings and Commanders) holds a peculiar position in his oeuvre. This collection of almost 500 anecdotes of barbarian, Greek, and Roman rulers and generals is introduced by a dedicatory letter to Trajan as a summary of the author’s well-known and widely read Parallel Lives. The work is therefore Plutarch’s only text that explicitly addresses a Roman emperor and is likely to shed light on his biographical technique. Yet the collection has been understudied, because its authenticity has been generally rejected since the nineteenth century. Recent scholarship defends Plutarch's authorship of the text, but some remain sceptical. This book restores its reputation and provides a first full literary analysis of the letter and collection as a genuine work of Plutarch, wherein he attempts to educate his ruler by means of great role models of the past. Plutarch’s thinking about the function of role models (exempla) is not only relevant for Plutarchan research, but also for our knowledge of exemplarity, a key feature both in Greek and Latin literature in the early imperial period in general. Therefore An Opaque Mirror for Trajan is also of interest for literary and historical scholars who study the broader context of ancient literature of the first centuries CE.
