This book is about the process of Americanization of Yugoslav culture and everyday life during the sixties. After having fallen out of the Eastern bloc, Tito turned to American backing. In political ...spheres distance was carefully guarded, yet in the realms of culture and consumption the Yugoslav regime was definitely much more receptive. For Titoist Yugoslavia this tactic turned out to be rewarding. It stabilised the regime internally and gave it an image of openness in foreign policy. The book addresses the link between cultural diplomacy, culture, consumer society and politics. The main argument is that both culture and everyday life modelled on the American way were a major source of legitimacy for the Yugoslav Communist Party, and a powerful weapon for both USA and Yugoslavia in the Cold War battle for hearts and minds. Vučetić explores how the Party used American culture in order to promote its own values and how life in this socialist and capitalist hybrid system looked like for ordinary people, living in a country with communist ideology wrapped in capitalist form. The book offers a careful reevaluation of the limits of appropriating the American dream. The analysis raises doubts toward both the uncritical celebration of Yugoslavia’s openness and the exaggerated picture of its authoritarianism.

Brod (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Slavonski Brod (Republic of Croatia) towns were positioned in two different federal republics of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRJ) divided ...by the Sava River as its natural boundary. They essentially represented almost a single, unified city, with a multi-ethnic structure of the population, and high production industrial capacity. The authors of this article use the conceptual model of double towns developed by Buursink, and Dębicki and Tamáska, applying it to the case of the above-mentioned towns. This article analyzes the current status of the towns in terms of the impact of war attrocities on their economic, cultural, urban and demographic resources and mutual cooperation. Emphasis is placed on the permanent damage caused by ethnic separation between these cities as well as the consequences arising from the division of industrial capacities, which determined the further development of these towns, their economic potential and urban sprawl, as well as the quality of life of the population. This research is based on case study methodology, with a focus on secondary data analysis. The results of the research show that the formation of new states and wars in the former SFRJ caused the division of economic and human capital, with severe consequences. The postsocialist transition and badly conducted privatization, together with the new national borders and ethnic separation, caused a division between these towns that resulted in a decrease in their mutual cultural and economic cooperation. However, a more favourable environment for life and development has been noted in Slavonski Brod (Republic of Croatia), which during the pre-war period had more economic and institutional capacity, as well as a larger population. Some of these advantages have become more important with the entry of the Republic of Croatia into the European Union, which turned out to be an additional factor of separation between these former double towns. Within this context, the authors identify patterns related to the revitalization of certain social ties that existed before the division.

While Yugoslavs made up the second largest immigrant group in the country, their impact has received little critical attention until now. With a particular focus on German policies and attitudes toward immigrants, Christopher Molnar argues that considerations of race played only a marginal role in German attitudes and policies towards Yugoslavs. Rather, the history of Yugoslavs in postwar Germany was most profoundly shaped by the memory of World War II and the shifting Cold War context. Molnar shows how immigration was a key way in which Germany negotiated the meaning and legacy of the war.

Bez obzira na razloge raspada ove državne tvorevine, granice i etnički odnosi imali su velik utjecaj na tijek raspada i događaje koji su mu prethodili. Krenemo li od geografskog faktora u pogledu teritorijalnih pretenzija i promjena granice; ili pak; demografskog faktora, etničke i nacionalne pripadnosti stanovništva ove zajednice, dobivamo šaroliku sliku, koju je neophodno objasniti prije bilo koje od analiza događaja na ovom prostoru devedesetih godina prošlog stoljeća. Rad istražuje problematiku granica (između država nastalih raspadom) bivše Jugoslavije, u njihovoj geografskoj, etničkoj i povijesnoj komponenti, kao jedan od sastavnih dijelova problematike raspada SFRJ, te značaj etničkih odnosa u bivšoj Jugoslaviji, u procesu njenog raspada i neposredno nakon njega.
