This article aims to (a) describe the study design of a 6‐year follow‐up multidisciplinary research project on aging, (b) report the psychosocial characteristics of the sample in detail, and (c) ...evaluate aging‐related changes of health, physical activity, and psychosocial characteristics in 10 young‐old (age at pre‐test: M ± SD = 63.2 ± 1.5) and 12 old‐old (age at pre‐test: M ± SD = 69 ± 2) individuals. Both age groups consist of individuals displaying a high health status, a high extent of physical activity, high levels of psychosocial properties in the dimensions of well‐being, life satisfaction, self‐concept, body image, self‐esteem, and self‐efficacy, as well as a low general depression index. Psychosocial characteristics demonstrated a stable pattern over a period of nearly 6 years in both age groups with the exceptions of physical activity, satisfaction with children, general depression, and self‐efficacy. Furthermore, physical self‐concept decreased in old‐old adults, whereas the young‐olds showed no change. We assume that a high psychosocial status and a physically active lifestyle play an important role for mastering aging successfully in two life phases, each of which has its own challenges for older individuals. The decline in the physical self‐concept of old‐olds is interpreted as a first sign of subjective aging. Its association with losses in physical performance should be addressed in future studies. Finally, aging‐related changes should be monitored on an individual level in order to capture the complex dynamic of aging that is not considered in analyses of between‐person differences or averages.

This study examines remains of the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) found inside the Austrian Alps, an area occupied by an extensive ice-stream network during the Last Glacial Maximum. The data ...demonstrate that these cold steppe-adapted animals locally migrated several tens of kilometers into alpine valleys. Radiocarbon analyses constrain the age of these fossils to the first half of Marine Isotope Stage 3, documenting ice-free conditions in major valleys at that time.
We also provide a list of all traceable Austrian sites of Mammuthus primigenius, totaling about 230 localities, compiled through 15 museums and collections in Austria. The vast majority of these findings are from the corridors of the Danube and Mur rivers and their tributaries and the adjacent loess-covered foreland of the Alps, areas that were never ice-covered during Pleistocene glaciations.

Johann Michael Haydn (1737–1806), court musician to the prince-archbishop of Salzburg, composed the Missa Sancti Hieronymi in 1777, apparently intended to mark the name-day of his employer: 30 ...September, the feast-day of St. Jerome. Because of its wind-band scoring, this Mass is unique, not only among Haydn’s Masses, but also in the Mass repertoire of Salzburg, and apparently in that of all late eighteenth-century Austria. The present article discusses the environment in which Haydn functioned and its effect on the practice of church music in Salzburg and generally in Catholic Austria. Haydn’s employer, Archbishop Colloredo, was a proponent of Enlightenment thinking. He expressed in his Hirtenbrief of 1782 ideas opposed to the kind of sacred music then prevalent in Austria, in particular, the orchestral Mass. Reflective of the new Gottesdienstordnung promulgated by Emperor Joseph II, the proposed changes include the introduction of congregational hymns in the vernacular and severe reduction in numbers of liturgies and the amount of music allowed in them. Colloredo finds support for his ideas in the writings of St. Jerome and other church fathers. Given Haydn’s strong Catholic faith and dedication as a composer of sacred music, the article suggests that although he wrote the Missa as a dutiful servant of his employer, he meant it above all as a tribute to St. Jerome.
The utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is on the rise, demanding increased accessibility to (public) medical data for benchmarking. The digitization of healthcare in recent ...years has facilitated medical data scientists' access to extensive hospital data, fostering AI-based research. A notable addition to this trend is the Salzburg Intensive Care database (SICdb), made publicly available in early 2023. Covering over 27 thousand intensive care admissions at the University Hospital Salzburg from 2013 to 2021, this dataset presents a valuable resource for AI-driven investigations. This article explores the SICdb and conducts a comparative analysis with the widely recognized Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care - version IV (MIMIC-IV) database. The comparison focuses on key aspects, emphasizing the availability and granularity of data provided by the SICdb, particularly vital signs and laboratory measurements. The analysis demonstrates that the SICdb offers more detailed information with higher data availability and temporal resolution for signal data, especially for vital signs, compared to the MIMIC-IV. This is advantageous for longitudinal studies of patients' health conditions in the intensive care unit. The SICdb provides a valuable resource for medical data scientists and researchers. The database offers comprehensive and diverse healthcare data in a European country, making it well suited for benchmarking and enhancing AI-based healthcare research. The importance of ongoing efforts to expand and make public datasets available for advancing AI applications in the healthcare domain is emphasized by the findings.
This study analyzes long‐term changes in muscle strength, muscle architecture, and patellar tendon mechanical properties in a specific sample of physically active elderly people. Twenty‐two ...participants were re‐examined from a former 12‐week‐long skiing intervention study: 11 from the intervention group (IG: 7 ♀, 4 ♂; 67 ± 3 years) and 11 from the control group (CG: 6 ♀, 5 ♂; 66 ± 4 years). Muscle architecture, strength endurance, maximum torque, and tendon properties were analyzed three times within 6 months, and again 6 years later in a follow‐up test. No changes in either group could be observed between June 2009 and April 2015 in any parameter. This can be interpreted positively because no age‐related decreases were found. Although our participants were physically active from the very beginning (>150 min/wk), it must be noted that the intensity of the physical activity was too low to provoke physiological improvements in leg strength or muscle/tendon morphology.
This article aims to analyse long‐term changes in cognitive performance and psychophysiological stress regulation in a specific sample of 10 young‐old (age at pre‐test: M ± SD = 63.2 ± 1.5) and 12 ...old‐old (age at pre‐test: M ± SD = 69 ± 2) persons possessing a high psychosocial status and a physically active lifestyle. Psychophysiological parameters were recorded prior to, during, and after the administration of a cognitive performance test battery. The measurements took place three times within a 6‐month period, and again 6 years later in a follow‐up test. Considering practice and habituation effects, findings provide no compelling evidence of an aging‐associated cognitive decline in attention, multiple choice reaction performance, and information processing speed, either in the young‐olds, or in the old‐olds. Furthermore, psychophysiological stress regulation showed no long‐term alteration regarding skin conductance level and heart rate. Based on these findings, it is assumed that psychosocial health and physical activity might contribute to the preservation of cognitive abilities and stress regulation into the 70s. Finally, this study demonstrated the significance of considering practice and habituation effects elicited through test repetitions in order to estimate long‐term effects.
The present volume lists 222 charters and letters of Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Frederick III. (1440-1493), issued between 1480 and 1482. The charters highlight sequences of political ...conflicts from the southwest to the northeast of the Empire, from Konstanz and Tyrol/Trento to Friesland and Riga, such as the replacement of the archbishop of Salzburg. Most of the charters and letters however serve to illustrate the more or less "regular" activities and official acts that were executed by Frederick III. as the local ruler of the Habsburgian hereditary territories.
Der vorliegende Band verzeichnet 222 Urkunden und Briefe Kaiser Friedrichs III. (1440-1493), ausgestellt in den Regierungsjahren 1480-1482. Ein Teil der Urkunden bietet Ausschnitte aus politischen Konfliktherden vom Südwesten bis in den Nordosten des Reches, von Konstanz und Tirol/Trient bis Friesland und Riga, darunter dem Salzburger Bistumsstreit. Der überwiegende Teil der Urkunden und Briefe hingegen bildet die mehr oder weniger "regulären" Aktivitäten und Amtshandlungen ab, die Friedrich III. als Landesfürst der von ihm regierten habsburgischen Erbländer, v.a. des Herzogtums Österreich, vollzog.
Cosmic‐ray neutron sensing (CRNS) is a promising non‐invasive technique to estimate snow water equivalent (SWE) over large areas. In contrast to preliminary studies focusing on shallow snow ...conditions (SWE
<130 mm), more recently the method was shown experimentally to be sensitive also to deeper snowpacks providing the basis for its use at mountain experimental sites. However, hysteretic neutron response has been observed for complex snow cover including patchy snow‐free areas. In the present study we aimed to understand and support the experimental findings using a comprehensive neutron modeling approach. Several simulations have been set up in order to disentangle the effect on the signal of different land surface characteristics and to reproduce multiple observations during periods of snow melt and accumulation. To represent the actual land surface heterogeneity and the complex snow cover, the model used data from terrestrial laser scanning. The results show that the model was able to accurately reproduce the CRNS signal and particularly the hysteresis effect during accumulation and melting periods. Moreover, the sensor footprint was found to be anisotropic and affected by the spatial distribution of liquid water and snow as well as by the topography of the nearby mountains. Under fully snow‐covered conditions the CRNS is able to accurately estimate SWE without prior knowledge about snow density profiles or other spatial anomalies. These results provide new insights into the characteristics of the detected neutron signal in complex terrain and support the use of CRNS for long‐term snow monitoring in high elevated mountain environments.
