Este trabajo tiene como objetivo estudiar la historia de la relojería en Santiago de Compostela durante el siglo XVIII desde un punto de vista difusionista. Para este fin, emplearemos una amplia ...variedad de fuente impresas, notariales, fiscales y judiciales, entre otras. Abordaremos los cauces de la difusión técnica, sobre todo los tratados de relojería publicados en España entre 1698 y 1802; el perfil social y profesional de los relojeros que trabajaron en Galicia, especialmente de aquellos que sirvieron al cabildo catedralicio compostelano; y las transformaciones en el consumo de relojes, que se generalizaron como objetos de prestigio y distinción entre las elites sociales de la ciudad.

The road, journey, wandering are topics known from works of various historical epochs that still appear in social sciences, philosophy and literature. According to Zygmunt Bauman, as humans, we have ...gone from the times of solid modernity, when we perceived ourselves as “pilgrims” characterized by the concept of identity, to the times of liquid modernity, when we are “tourists” looking for diverse but ephemeral experiences. In this article, I show that the idea of pilgrimage is still valid and allows us to strengthen our identity. I refer to the broad understanding of pilgrimage in the Christian tradition, to the currently observed increase in the popularity of pilgrimages and, above all, to the interpretation of my own experiences of making pilgrimages on the Spanish Camino de Santiago trails. Finally, I characterize the specificity of the pilgrim’s role and the criteria for shaping his identity.
This study aims to understand the relationships between authenticity and the constructs of theory of planned behaviour (TPB), namely, attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and ...behavioural intention, of pilgrims who participated in the Camino de Santiago walk in Spain. A survey involving 400 respondents was conducted and structural equation modelling was employed in analysing the data. Results revealed positive relationships between authenticity and attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control. Attitude and subjective norms had a positive and significant relationship with behavioural intention, whereas perceived behavioural control showed an insignificant relationship with behavioural intention. Authenticity mediated by the TPB constructs positively influenced the behavioural intention of pilgrims. Findings of this study provide an improved understanding of how authenticity interacts with attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control, thereby influencing the behavioural intention to walk the St. James Way. Thus, this study contributes to an improved insight into the impact of authenticity on pilgrims' behavioural intention.
El Servicio Universitario del Trabajo (SUT) fue una organización creada a partir de una actividad voluntaria, tras la experiencia de trabajo de tres estudiantes en Rodalquilar en 1950. En unos años, ...el SUT extendió sus estructuras en las principales ciudades universitarias: Madrid, Sevilla, Oviedo o Santiago de Compostela. Y con la expansión territorial también se produjo una extensión de sus actividades, que les permitió estar en contacto con la población más cercana a sus centros de estudio. Primero se comenzó con el «trabajo dominical», con el que los estudiantes se acercaban a los barrios más desfavorecidos a ayudar a construir casas. Una vez allí, las necesidades se multiplicaron, con tareas de alfabetización, sanitarias o de asistencia en casas. En esta investigación se pone la lupa sobre una agrupación en concreto, la de Santiago de Compostela, una de las más activas en este periodo. Esto permite analizar el funcionamiento del SUT en el ámbito local, en la cercanía con los estudiantes, su ideología, sus actividades y la influencia que tuvieron en su propia ciudad. Se trata de un estudio de caso que también nos muestra una historia regional, la de Galicia, en la ciudad sede de la que entonces era su única universidad.
This paper seeks to reveal aspects of the process of the writing of history and the reinvention of the religious past which became crucial strategic elements in the legitimisation of some of the most ...important ecclesiastical institutions of medieval Iberia. Focusing on two texts, the Historia Compostellana and the Chronicon Iriense, both produced in the diocese of Santiago de Compostela, and each fundamental in defending the rights and authority of this powerful Galician see, we analyse their portrayal of Miro, king of the Suevi (r. 570-583), to whom is attributed the ecclesiastical organisation of northwestern Hispania. Both texts present this king as a central figure of Galician political and religious identity. The rewriting in medieval Compostela of Miro's history is shown to be a key element in the disputes between that diocese and other Iberian episcopates, namely Braga, Toledo, Mondoñedo and Lugo.
The extraordinary cornucopias that the queen mother Mariana of
Habsburg donated to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in 1683 are one of
the most interesting pieces of silversmithing preserved ...in Spain. The historiography
has been focusing on discuss which iconography they represent, but, taking into
account that the pieces were clearly not commissioned for Santiago specifically,
we think that it is more important explore the reasons of the offering. An analysis
of the queen inventory shows that Mariana had nothing so extraordinary such as
these pieces, and getting rid of them had to indicate a powerful reason. Also, it is
important the fact that the queen wanted to offer the present alone, as herself, without
his son the king Carlos II. The gifts are framed in an anchored offering tradition
stablished by Spanish monarchy, strengthening the filiation between the kings and
the protection of the Spanish patron saint. However, we think that these gifts hide
an intention that goes beyond a simple offering to the Apostle Saint Jacques, and
they were delivered as a personal decision of the queen to thank the divine intervention
of “Santiago Matamoros” in favour of the Austrian troops against the Ottoman
Empire
Las extraordinarias cornucopias que la reina Mariana de Austria donó a la catedral de Santiago en 1683 son unas de las piezas de platería más interesantes que se conservan en España. La historiografía se ha centrado en discutir qué pasajes iconográficos representan, pero teniendo en cuenta que las piezas, claramente, no fueron encargadas específicamente para Santiago, consideramos que es más importante explorar las razones de la ofrenda. El análisis del inventario de la reina demuestra que Mariana nunca tuvo piezas de platería tan extraordinarias como estas, y el hecho de deshacerse de ellas debe indicar una razón poderosa. También es importante el hecho de que la propia Mariana quisiese ofrecer el presente en solitario, como reina madre, sin su hijo Carlos II. Este regalo se encuadra dentro de una anclada tradición que echa a andar en los primeros años de vida de la primigenia fábrica jacobea, la de los regalos con los que la monarquía española fue agasajando a la Catedral, reforzando la constante filiación entre los reyes y la protección del patrón de España. Sin embargo, creemos que estos presentes esconden una intención que va más allá de la simple ofrenda monárquica al apóstol, y fueron entregados como decisión personal de la reina para agradecer la intervención divina de Santiago Matamoros a favor de las tropas austríacas contra el Imperio Otomano.

The author reports about a concrete example of embodied performative practice in the language classroom that can be adapted to different language levels. This workshop allows students to become ...pilgrims on Spain's El Camino (The Way) de Santiago de Compostela, a pilgrimage route with a long history that ends in the medieval city of Santiago de Compostela, located on the Northwest region of Galicia in Spain. While participating in the workshop Performing El Camino (The Way) of Santiago de Compostela, students must collaborate and complete several tasks while using the target language in a context similar to the real world. It is hoped that this proposal is helpful for language teachers and learners in the quest for fresh approaches to using embodied performative teaching in the classroom.
Urban soils are still insufficiently studied despite the relevance of their functions in the urban environment. The city of Santiago de Compostela (northwestern Spain) offers interesting ...opportunities for the study of urban soils because of its geological diversity and the variety of land use and vegetation. With the objective of increasing information about urban soils in Spain, we studied samples from 56 urban soils (0–20 cm) in this city, developed over different parent materials (granites, gneiss, schists, and amphibolites) and under several land uses (lawn areas, forested areas, urban allotment gardens, peri‐urban agricultural soils, and a green roof). The main physicochemical properties of the soils were analyzed, including bulk density, texture, pH, organic matter, cation exchange capacity, available P, and compounds of Fe and Al. The soils are coarse textured (dominant texture is sandy loam) and acidic (pH in water from 4.7 to 6.9), with moderate to high organic matter contents (13–137 g organic C kg−1). Cation exchange capacity ranges from 9 to 48 cmolc kg−1, with Ca as the most abundant exchangeable cation in most soils. Overall, the soils do not show several of the common features of other urban soils, such as alkalinity, high bulk density, or large amounts of artifacts, and their composition is very similar to their natural counterparts in the region. The conservation of these soils with a low degree of artificialization is essential because they can provide a wide range of ecosystem services.
Many studies have found that the perceived authenticity of cultural and religious events affects event satisfaction and loyalty. Little is currently known about how perceived authenticity is affected ...by the quality of other event attributes, such as food and the availability of information, which are independent determinants of satisfaction and loyalty. This article explores this complex relationship using empirical data collected through a survey conducted during the 2010 Holy Year in Santiago de Compostela. A total of 400 questionnaires were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM). The results of our analysis of the 2010 Holy Year provide support for the effect of event perceived authenticity on event satisfaction, and they also indicate that event perceived authenticity does not have a direct impact on event loyalty. Instead, its relationship to the intention to revisit is mediated by event satisfaction. In addition, the effects of event attributes were assessed for both event satisfaction and perceived authenticity, and significant differences were found.
