In the late 1930s, John Steinbeck, Richard Wright, and Ernest Hemingway wrote novels that won critical acclaim and popular success: The Grapes of Wrath, Native Son, and For Whom the Bell Tolls. All ...three writers were involved with the Left at the time, and that commitment informed their fiction. Milton Cohen examines their motives for involvement with the Left; their novels' political themes; and why they separated from the Left after the novels were published. These writers were deeply conflicted about their political commitments, and Cohen explores the tensions that arose between politics and art, resulting in the abandonment of a political attachment.

İhmal edilmiş konulardan ve detaylardan yola çıkarak özgün hikayeler anlatmayı ve olayların özüne inerek sıradan insanların hayatlarına dokunmayı başarmış bir gazeteci ve yazar olarak Steinbeck’in metinlerinin, günümüzde içerikten yoksun, standartlaşmış habercilik karşısında bir alternatif olarak öne çıkan özgün içerik üretme ve hikaye anlatma konusunda örnek oluşturabileceği düşünülmektedir. Bu amaçla çalışmada, Steinbeck’in, gazeteci kimliğinin ön plana çıktığı ve edebi röportaj türünün seçkin örnekleri arasında yer alan İkinci Dünya Savaşı’nın arka planını anlattığı Bir Savaş Vardı ve Amerikan toplumuna dair gözlemlerini aktardığı Köpeğim Charley ile Amerika Yollarında eserleri incelenmiştir. Betimsel olarak analiz edilen bu iki metnin edebi gazeteciliğin, yazarın bizzat olayın içinde olduğu, tanıklığa dayanan ve sıradan insanlar ile küçük detaylardan yola çıkarak hayata dokunan özgün hikayeler anlatmaya imkan tanıyan özelliklerini taşıdığı görülmüştür. Steinbeck’in gazeteciliğini günümüzde alternatif gazeteciliğin tanımı ve örneği olarak sunulan ve iletişim teknolojilerinin avantajlarıyla geliştirilmeye çalışılan birçok haber formatı ve pratiğinin ilk örneklerini oluşturduğu ve gazeteciliğin güncel konu ve sorunlarına kaynaklık edecek derin bir potansiyel barındırdığı sonucuna varılmıştır.
This study aims to scrutinize the lesser-known journalist identity of John Steinbeck (1902-1968), who has a global reputation as a novelist. Before producing his works including the Great Depression novels that led him to fame, Steinbeck was among the prominent representatives of the literary reportage genre, as he was worked as a reporter for various newspapers and combined his literary talent with journalistic practice. As a journalist and a writer who managed to touch the lives of ordinary people by getting at the heart of the events and telling unique stories on neglected issues and details, Steinbeck’s texts can be considered as an example of unique content production and storytelling, which constitute an alternative for today’s standardized news reporting devoid of content. For this purpose, this paper analyses Steinbeck’s two works, which foreground his identity as a journalist and are among the outstanding examples of the literary reportage genre: Once There Was a War, in which he narrates the background of World War II, and Travels with Charley: In Search of America, in which he conveys his observations on the United States society. As a result of thematic analysis, it is observed that these texts provide the opportunity to narrate unique life-touching stories based on testimonies and by proceeding with ordinary people and details. In sum, Steinbecks’ journalism constitutes the initial examples of many news formats and practices, which have later been defined and promoted as alternative journalism and developed further through communication technologies, and promises a significant potential that can offer solutions to the contemporary issues in journalism.

John Steinbeck, an American author, ...portrays life-like characters in his realistic novels.One of his literary works, The Pearl is a striking novel published in 1947. The story concerns with a tragedy of a pearl diver named Kino and his wife, Juana. The story is spun around the themes of greed, poverty, power politics, exploitation, and so on. Juana, the female protagonist of the novel The Pearl, carries paradoxical traits in her, unlike the other women of her community. Her difference is observed and amplified in the story and that demands to be understood using Carl Jung’s archetypal concept of animus. Thus, in order to appreciate her design as in the hands of Steinbeck, this research article aims to render a psychological character study of Juanato understand her better in her cluttered colonial situation.

Zeldin wrote several books on the art of conversation, speaking to people for whom it is a central need in life.

Two decades ago, during a brief stint working in a teacher preparation program, Heller got to know a young man who struck him as an exceptionally promising educator. Tom was a top student in the ...university's English department, a gifted writer, and, according to his supervising instructor at the local high school, far and away the best student teacher she had seen in her 40 years in the classroom.
