The systems approach, or systems thinking, has been intimately connected with the development of OR and management science initially through the work of founders such as Churchman and Ackoff and ...latterly through innovations such as soft systems. In this paper we have undertaken a review of the contribution that systems thinking has been making more recently, especially to the practice of OR. Systems thinking is a discipline in its own right, with many theoretical and methodological developments, but it is also applicable to almost any problem area because of its generality, and so such a review must always be selective. We have looked at the literature from both a theoretical and an applications orientation. In the first part we consider the main systems theories and methodologies in terms of their recent developments and also their applications. This covers: the systems approach, complexity theory, cybernetics, system dynamics, soft OR and PSMs, critical systems and multimethodology. In the second part we review the main domains of application: strategy, information systems, organisations, production and operations, ecology and agriculture, and medicine and health. Our overall conclusion is that while systems may not be well established institutionally, in terms of academic departments, it is incredibly healthy in terms of the quantity and variety of its applications.

In this paper, the quantized H ∞ control problem is investigated for a class of nonlinear stochastic time-delay network-based systems with probabilistic data missing. A nonlinear stochastic system ...with state delays is employed to model the networked control systems where the measured output and the input signals are quantized by two logarithmic quantizers, respectively. Moreover, the data missing phenomena are modeled by introducing a diagonal matrix composed of Bernoulli distributed stochastic variables taking values of 1 and 0, which describes that the data from different sensors may be lost with different missing probabilities. Subsequently, a sufficient condition is first derived in virtue of the method of sector-bounded uncertainties, which guarantees that the closed-loop system is stochastically stable and the controlled output satisfies H ∞ performance constraint for all nonzero exogenous disturbances under the zero-initial condition. Then, the sufficient condition is decoupled into some inequalities for the convenience of practical verification. Based on that, quantized H ∞ controllers are designed successfully for some special classes of nonlinear stochastic time-delay systems by using Matlab linear matrix inequality toolbox. Finally, a numerical simulation example is exploited to show the effectiveness and applicability of the results derived.
This paper considers the distributed consensus problem of multi-agent systems with general continuous-time linear dynamics for both the cases without and with a leader whose control input might be ...nonzero and time varying. For the case without a leader, based on the relative output information of neighboring agents, two types of distributed adaptive dynamic consensus protocols are proposed, namely, the edge-based adaptive protocol which assigns a time-varying coupling weight to each edge in the communication graph and the node-based adaptive protocol which uses a time-varying coupling weight for each node. These two adaptive protocols are designed to ensure that consensus is reached in a fully distributed fashion for all undirected connected communication graphs. It is shown that the edge-based adaptive consensus protocol is applicable to arbitrary switching connected graphs. For the case where there exists a leader whose control input is possibly nonzero and bounded, a distributed continuous adaptive protocol is designed to guarantee the ultimate boundedness of the consensus error with respect to any communication graph which contains a directed spanning tree with the leader as the root and whose subgraph associated with the followers is undirected, requiring neither global information of the communication graph nor the upper bound of the leader’s control input. A distributed discontinuous protocol is also discussed as a special case. Simulation examples are finally given to illustrate the theoretical results.
In this paper, exponential consensus of general linear multiagent systems with Lipschitz nonlinear dynamics using sampled-data information is investigated. Both leaderless and leader-following ...consensuses are considered. Using input-delay approach, the resulting sampled-data closed-loop systems are first reformulated as continuous systems with time-varying delay in the control input. Then, decoupled conditions in terms of linear matrix equality (LMI) on the Lipschitz constant, the decay rate, the communication graph parameters, and the control gain matrix to guarantee exponential consensus are derived using novel Lyapunov functionals. Based on the sufficient conditions, controller design methods are also provided in the form of decoupled LMIs. Finally, simulation examples including the consensus of Chua's circuit systems are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained results.
