Trait emotional intelligence (“trait EI”) concerns our perceptions of our emotional abilities, that is, how good we believe we are in terms of understanding, regulating, and expressing emotions in ...order to adapt to our environment and maintain well-being. In this article, we present succinct summaries of selected findings from research on (a) the location of trait EI in personality factor space, (b) the biological underpinnings of the construct, (c) indicative applications in the areas of clinical, health, social, educational, organizational, and developmental psychology, and (d) trait EI training. Findings to date suggest that individual differences in trait EI are a consistent predictor of human behavior across the life span.
This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Greek version of the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (TEIQue-SF). For this evaluation, 602 adults (M=34years of age, ...SD=10.96) completed the TEIQue-SF, the Traits Personality Questionnaire (TPQue5), the Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS), and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). The internal consistency of the TEIQue-SF was satisfactory for the factors and excellent for the total score. Statistically significant correlations between the TEIQue-SF and the TPQue5 and between the SHS and the SWLS constituted evidence of its convergent validity with cognate constructs. In addition, trait EI accounted for a significant amount of the variance in happiness and life satisfaction over and above the Big Five, showing evidence supporting incremental validity in relation to the Big Five personality dimensions. The results indicate that the Greek translation of TEIQue-SF is reliable and valid, and can be recommended for use with Greek samples.

This study investigated the relationship between the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF) and the ten facets of the Big Five Questionnaire (BFQ) via network analysis. The ...TEIQue-SF and the BFQ were administered to 751 Italian workers. Both centrality indexes (Expected Influence and Node Predictability) and bridge dimensions were calculated. Stability and accuracy were also checked to ensure the reliability of the findings. The BFQ facets of Perseverance (Consciousness) had the highest centrality while Emotion control (Emotion stability, the opposite of Neuroticism) showed high centrality. Among TEIQue-SF dimensions, Sociability followed by Emotionality and Self-Control had high centrality. TEIQue-SF Emotionality and Sociability had a bridge function. Both TEIQue-SF Emotionality and Sociability and both BFQ Perseverance and Emotion control are relevant in linking emotional intelligence and personality traits. Although further studies are needed, the network analysis represents a promising approach in providing a more detailed analysis of the relationships between dimensions of emotional intelligence and facets of personality traits in workers.
The existence of individual differences in trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) makes the investigation of factors that contribute to such variations critical. Given the paucity of research in ...this area, the purpose of this study was the examination of the relationship between parenting styles and trait EI in an adolescent population. The sample of our study consisted of 127 adolescents (M age = 16.4, SD = 0.96; 42.2% female) from Greek schools, 15–19 years old, who were asked to complete questionnaires of perceived parenting (Parental Authority Questionnaire – PAQ) and trait EI (Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire–Adolescent Short Form – TEIQue–ASF). The estimation of the association between parenting scores and trait EI was based on a multivariable mixed‐effects regression model. An association between parenting styles and trait EI, statistically significant for authoritativeness (b = 0.27, z = 3.92, p < 0.001) and marginally significant for authoritarianism (b = –0.10, z = –1.77, p = 0.08), emerged even after controlling for a set of potential predictors of trait EI. Additionally, statistically significant associations of adolescents’ gender (b = –0.29, z = –2.37, p = 0.02) and parental education (b = 0.32, z = 2.54, p = 0.01) with trait EI were found. These findings provide insight in the field of trait EI antecedents and underline the potential significance of primary prevention programs with parents that aim to develop trait EI at a young age.
The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF), a brief and effective tool used for assessing emotional intelligence, originated in the Western culture and needs to be adapted ...to other cultures. The current study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of an Arabic-adapted version of the TEIQue-SF. A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 487 Arabic-speaking participants, including students and laypeople. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to assess the conceptual factorial structure. Measurement invariance analyses were performed across genders. The big five were employed as external validation measures. The CFA findings validated the proposed TEIQue-SF structure, which included one latent factor (global trait EI) and four indicator factors. Analysis of measurement invariance revealed that the TEIQue-SF Arabic version was factorially equivalent across genders. Furthermore, TEIQue-SF demonstrated good internal consistency. No significant differences are observed between women and men in terms of trait emotional intelligence. The correlations between TEIQue-SF and the big five dimensions demonstrated the theoretically predicted relationships with these variables. We concluded that the Arabic version of the TEIQue-SF is psychologically sound and appropriate for research and practice in Jordan.

We hypothesized that trait EI profiles would differ both within surgical specialties as well as between them and other professions. Study 1 (
= 122) compared the trait EI profiles of four different surgical specialties (General, Orthopedic, Head and Neck, and Miscellaneous surgical specialties). There were no significant differences amongst these specialties or between consultant surgeons and trainees in these specialties. Accordingly, the surgical data were combined into a single target sample (
= 462) that was compared against samples of engineers, executives and senior managers, lawyers, junior military managers, nurses, and salespeople. Surgeons scored significantly higher on global trait EI than junior military managers, but lower than executives and senior managers, salespeople, and nurses. There were no significant differences vis-à-vis engineers or lawyers. A MANOVA confirmed a similar pattern of differences in the four trait EI factors (Wellbeing, Self-control, Sociability, and Emotionality). Global trait EI scores correlated strongly with single-question measures of job satisfaction (
= 0.47) and job performance (
= 0.46) in the surgical sample. These findings suggest that interventions to optimize the trait EI profiles of surgeons can be helpful in relation to job satisfaction, job performance, and overall psychological wellbeing.
Trait emotional intelligence (EI) has received considerable empirical attention over the last decade, especially in Western individualist societies. However, little is known about the construct in ...Eastern collectivist societies. The present study investigated cultural differences in trait EI between Hong Kong and the UK (n=474) using the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire. Comparison of group factor structures revealed satisfactory congruence coefficients for the four trait EI factors of Well-being, Sociability, Emotionality, and Self-control. In addition, results showed pronounced cross-cultural variation in global trait EI scores, with British participants scoring consistently higher than their Chinese counterparts. Results from the Chinese sample also yielded support for the cultural accommodation effect, viz. that multilingual individuals respond in a manner that favours or conforms to the culture associated with the language of the questionnaire. Findings are discussed with reference to cross-cultural applications of trait EI theory.
This reliability generalization study aimed to calculate the overall alpha values of the total Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue–SF) and its subscales scores and to ...examine the possible moderator variables that may be effective on the variability in the alpha values of the TEIQue–SF. This RG study was conducted with 472 alpha values from 426 unique studies for total TEIQue–SF. Overall alpha values were found as 0.86, 0.79, 0.68, 0.70, and 0.69 for total TEIQue–SF, wellbeing subscale, self-control subscale, emotionality subscale, and sociability subscale, respectively. Investigation of possible moderator variables showed that sample type (high school students, university students, etc.) and the region of the study (Europe, America, Africa, etc.) are significant moderators on the alpha value of total TEIQue–SF while language (English or non-English), discipline (education, medical, etc.), setting (clinical and non-clinical), and document type (published and non-published) are not significant categorical variables. Administrations with the samples recruited from university students and the general community and in European and American countries tend to produce higher alpha values. Also, the mean and SD of the scores produced by the TEIQue–SF are significant continuous moderators and they are positively related to the alpha values of the TEIQue–SF, while gender (male%), mean age (in years), and ethnicity (Caucasian%) are not significant continuous moderators.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is argued to predispose individuals to better apprehend and accomplish stressful tasks. Research produced to date has nevertheless mostly neglected the processes that ...render EI situationally advantageous. In this study, we used path analysis to explore how ability and trait EI relate to delivering a presentation under stress by distinguishing subjective and objective performance. We also proposed self-efficacy as a potential mediator of the trait EI-performance relationship. One hundred and twenty university students completed the STEU, STEM, and GERT (for ability EI) and the TEIQue (for trait EI); then they performed an oral presentation task in front of two evaluators. Students’ self-ratings and evaluators’ scores composed subjective and objective performance. Results indicated that: (a) self-efficacy fully mediated the relationship between trait EI and both subjective and objective performance; (b) ability EI, in particular emotion understanding (STEU), directly predicted objective performance. These findings highlight one way in which the two leading EI approaches may both contribute to performance under stress, but through distinctive paths.
