Curiously, though McBride acknowledges Hawks' penchant for "repeating and refining" stories, he does not cite in his selected bibliography a number of interviews published during the last decade in ...Jump Cut, Take One, and Movietone News which contain (sometimes informative) variations on many of the anecdotes included in Hawks on Hawks. Nothing is made in the introduction toHawks onHawks of the director's notorious penchant for styling himself as a kind of beneficent Svengali who discovered, schooled, and made a success of an unusual number of actors and actresses -and, by his account, some directors-without acknowledging that one or two of his Trilbys (male and female) had had some previous experience, even reputation, in film work.
In career terms, Pierre's wife is another example of Truffaut's betraying women (Antoine's mother in THE 400 BLOWS, Charlie's wife in SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER, Montag's wife in FAHRENHEIT 451) and ...vengeful murderesses (Moreau in JULES AND JIM and THE BRIDE WORE BLACK, Deneuve in MERMAID); but in dramatic terms, the femme fatale element is perfunctorily inserted into THE SOFT SKIN.
