Italy is the main recipient of asylum seekers in the European region, and Sicily is their first point of arrival. This geographical position creates a large job for Health Authorities to identify and ...deal with the health of immigrants. This study evaluates the prevalence of disease among asylum seekers, assessing which are associated factors.
A cross-sectional study was conducted to analyse demographic and clinical data in an Acceptance Centres for Asylum Seekers from February 2012 to May 2013. All variables that were found to be significant on unvariable analysis for the most frequent pathologies were included in a multivariable logistic regression model.
Post-traumatic stress disorders with 17.4% and major depression with 7.3% were the most frequent diseases. The factors associated with post-traumatic stress disorders among asylum seekers were: major depression diagnosis (OR=2.91, p=0.004), Pakistan as a country of origin (OR=3.88, p<0.001), the largest number of medical visits (OR=1.02, p=0.033) and refugee status (OR=1.97, p=0.036). The variables linked with the diagnosis of major depression from the multivariable analysis were: suffering from post-traumatic stress disorders (OR=3.83, p<0.001), Pakistan as a country of origin (OR=3.45, p=0.004) and the highest number of visits to psychologist (OR=1.15, p<0.001).
The mental wellbeing of asylum seekers needs special attention, and interventions should be done to prevent the consolidation of psychiatric morbidity. A short psychological screening after the arrival might prove helpful here. Moreover, carefully designed longitudinal studies should be carried out when political recommendations try to change the organization of psychological and healthcare services.
The aim of the study was to analyse the deviations of the body posture and to assess the occurrence of spine deformities. Additionally, Body Mass Index in school children was related to the trend in ...postural deformities for different age groups (5-8 years old, n=112; 9-11 years old, n=205; 12-14 years old, n=212) as part of the project "Spine Lab", granted from the European Commission IPA founds, investigating the importance of public health issues.
Body posture was measured using Contemplas 3D software analyser, based on video image trajectory and BIA weight scale (Tanita BC 420). Overall, 17 variables were assessed, and differences were confirmed using MANOVA analysis.
The results showed that there is a significant difference between age groups for the measured variables (F=9.27; p<0.01; η
=0.26), suggesting a moderate difference across the age span.
The study results showed that there is a negative trend of increasing Body Mass Index within the first and youngest age group. The fact is that the trend of increasing deformity of the shoulder belt has been noted, often inclining towards the formation of milder forms of kyphotic posture. Other forms of deformity that are accentuated in the survey results are the negative trend of increasing pelvic rotation and pelvis rotation which inclines towards the formation of lordotic posture for all three age groups.
Aiming at preparing the basis for evidence-based dental public health policy making in Slovenia, the objective of the study was to assess the strength of association between oral health status ...measured by the number of missing teeth and self-rated health (SRH).
The study was designed as a pooled individual-level data study from four national cross-sectional studies carried out in the period 2001-2012, based on CINDI Health Monitor methodology. Altogether, 34,412 participants were included. A logistic regression model with poor SRH as observed outcome and the number of teeth as explanatory factor (adjusted for selected biologic, socio-economic and health factors) was proposed.
In the sample, women represented 55.7% and men 44.3%, median age was 45 years. Persons with more missing teeth more likely rated their health as poor. The association was persistent even when different confounding variables were included in the model. In the group with 1-5 missing teeth, in comparison to the group with none missing teeth, OR was 1.23 (p=0.049), whereas for the group with 6-10 missing teeth, OR was 1.32 (p=0.019); for the group with >10 missing teeth, but not all, OR was 1.77 (p<0.001), and for the group with all missing teeth, OR was 2.19 (p<0.001).
Study results showed clear association of SRH with dentate status, which confirms the oral-general health connection. This indicates the need for the development of proper dental public health policies for better oral health, and presents a new view on the importance of preserving teeth.
Mood disorders are becoming one of the major public health problems and care for good mental health is substantially affecting almost all dimensions of our lives. However, the lay and professional ...public have the most contrasting attitudes and beliefs about mental disorders compared to other chronic non-communicable diseases. Persisting stereotypes and myths about mental disorders as a rule hinder professional help-seeking, interest and belief in their effective treatment. This problematic is discussed in the multi-authored monograph ('More Knowledge about Mood Disorders for Escaping the Labyrinth: Experiences and Reflections'). In the 21 scientific and professional essays, the authors of various academic backgrounds reflect upon mental health issues, focusing on contemporary mood disorders. Moreover, the first results of the newly introduced and innovative mental health promotion programme in Slovenia - With Raised Mental Health Literacy to Better Managing Mood Disorders (acronym OMRA) - are presented, as well. The monograph is good food for thought for the lay and professional public.
Članek obravnava tematiko zdravja v izobraževanju odraslih. Izhodišče razprave je sodobno pojmovanje zdravja, ki se uveljavlja v družbenih vedah in se razume kot fizična, psihosocialna in duhovna ...dobrobit. Poudarjena je tudi misel, da je zdravje proces in da zdravstveno stanje določajo tako subjektivni kot okoljski dejavniki. To odpira vrata teoriji salutogeneze, povezani s prepričanjem, da je zdravje mogoče izboljšati s pomočjo zdravstvene vzgoje in promocije zdravja. Koncept okoljskih in socio-kulturnih dejavnikov, ki odločajo o zdravju in vprašanja, ki se nanašajo na z zdravjem povezani vidik kakovosti življenja, so tudi uporabljeni kot referenčni okvir in teoretska podlaga za to pedagoško razpravo o zdravju kot predmetu izobraževanja odraslih.
Diabetes prevalence and costs are rising on aglobal scale. Therefore, it is necessary to periodically conduct cost studies for assessing the healthcare burden impact. In Slovenia, the last type 2 ...diabetes cost assessment was conducted in 2006, not including all diabetes complication costs. The aim of this study was to revise, update and compare to previously published datadirect healthcare costs of type 2 diabetes in Slovenia with additional complications costs consideration.
The study was performed from the healthcare payer perspective using the bottom-up approach, was prevalence based and estimated direct medical costs.
We estimated total yearly direct medical costs of type 2 diabetes in Slovenia to 99,120,419 euro with annual per capita costs of 834.70 euro. The highest cost shares were attributed to cardiovascular complication costs (21,683,919 euro), diabetes co-medication (20,977,269 euro) and diabetes treatment medication (18,505,015 euro). Highest yearly costs per complication (all cases, all occurrences) were estimated for dialysis I and III (9,162,635 euro), stroke first year costs (4,951,306 euro) and congestive heart failure first year costs (4,879,533 euro). Yearly per one patient, the complication costs were highest for kidney transplantation, followed by dialysis I and III (78,621.25 euro and 36,797.73 euro)
In comparison to the costs published in the literature before, our estimated total yearly direct medical costs were comparable, although annual per capita costs were assessed lower than elsewhere. Further, regarding the complication costs estimations, our assessed expenses were comparable to those published in other countries.
Prevalenca in stroški sladkorne bolezni v globalnem merilu naraščajo. Zato je treba redno izvajati študije stroškovnega bremena za oceno vpliva na zdravstvo. V Sloveniji je bila zadnja študija bremena sladkorne bolezni tipa 2 izvedena leta 2006 in ni upoštevala vseh stroškov diabetičnih zapletov. Cilj te raziskave je bil pregledati, posodobiti in primerjati s prej objavljenimi podatki neposredne medicinske stroške sladkorne bolezni tipa 2 v Sloveniji z upoštevanjem dodatnih diabetičnih zapletov.
Študija je bila izvedena z vidika plačnika zdravstvenega varstva; uporabljen je bil pristop »bottom-up« s prevalenčnim vidikom in ocenjeni so bili neposredni medicinski stroški.
Letne neposredne medicinske stroške sladkorne bolezni tipa 2 smo ocenili na 99,120.419 evrov z 834,70 evra letnih stroškov na osebo. Najvišji delež je pripadal stroškom srčno-žilnih zapletov (21,683.919 evrov), stroškom sočasno uporabljenih zdravil (20,977.269 evrov) in stroškom antidiabetikov in inzulinov (18,505.015 evrov). Najvišji letni stroški za diabetični zaplet (vse ponovitve in vsi primeri) so bili ocenjeni za dializo I in III (9,162.635 evrov), prvo leto možganske kapi (4.951.306 evrov) in prvo leto srčnega popuščanja (4,879.533 evrov). Najdražji zaplet sladkorne bolezni (letno na posameznega bolnika) je bila transplantacija ledvic (78.621,25 evra), sledili sta dializa I in III (letno na osebo 36.797,73 evra).
V primerjavi s prej objavljenimi podatki v literaturi so v tej raziskavi objavljeni letni neposredni medicinski stroški primerljivi, čeprav so letni stroški na osebo ocenjeni nižje kot drugje. Prav tako so stroškovne ocene posameznih zapletov sladkorne bolezni primerljive s prej objavljenimi.
Transnational multilingual information platform Danube Compass, part of the DRIM project (Danube Region Information Platform for Economic Integration of Migrants) financed by the European Union's ...Danube Transnational Programme, was created with the aim to improve access to information for migrants in eight countries along the Danube river. What we have learned in the process is what this handbook is all about. Its aim is to support the creation of similar platforms in other regions and is intended for organizations and institutions involved in the integration of newly arrived migrants. It should be helpful for anyone who is thinking of gathering focused information about arriving, working and living in another country. It provides hands-on checklists and ideas about how to implement one’s own platform for supporting migrants’ integration on local or national level.
članek osvetljuje vlogo lokalne skupnosti pri razvoju skupnostne skrbi na področju duševnega zdravja, kot jo vidijo tri skupine deležnikov: občinski uslužbenci (uslužbenci lokalnih ...skupnosti/upravnih subjektov), izvajalci v mreži programov in storitev za duševno zdravje ter uporabniki teh storitev. Gre za presečno študijo primera zdravstvene regije Novo mesto s kombinacijo kvantitativnih in kvalitativnih metod, s cilji oceniti sedanje stanje skrbi in ugotoviti, ali obstajajo razlike v razumevanju vloge lokalnih skupnosti pri razvoju skupnostne skrbi za duševno zdravje. Ugotovitve raziskave nakazujejo nekatere priložnosti za izboljšanje procesov skupnostne skrbi.
