Nevertheless, cities are typically imagined and structured with a younger, working-age population in mind while older people are rarely incorporated into the mainstream of thinking and planning around urban environments. Cities can contribute to vulnerability arising from high levels of population turnover, environmental problems, gentrification, and reduced availability of affordable housing. However, they can also provide innovative forms of support and services essential to promoting the quality of life of older people. Policies in Europe have emphasised the role of the local environment in promoting “ageing in place”, a term used to describe the goal of helping people to remain in their own homes and communities for as long as they wish. However, while this has been the dominant approach, the places in which older people are ageing have often proved to be challenging environments. The book explores the forces behind these developments and how older people have responded. Drawing upon approaches from social gerontology, urban studies, geography, and sociology, this book will be essential reading for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners searching for innovative ways to improve the lives of older people living in urban environments.

ObjectivesUroflowmetry (UFM) is the first‐line noninvasive screening test employed in the diagnosis of lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD). The purpose of this study was to determine normal UFM ...values in healthy Turkish children among our local population.MethodsA total of 100 healthy girls and 62 healthy boys aged 5–15 years, who applied to İnönü University Turgut Özal Medical Center Pediatrics Polyclinic between February 2021 and January 2022, were included in the present study. The UFM parameters, including maximum flow rate (Qmax), average flow rate (Qavg), voided volume (VV), time to maximum flow, and voiding time, were measured using the Inoflow Smart System UFM Device and the resulting urine flow curve was recorded. The children were compared in terms of the UFM parameters based on their gender and age groups (5–10 years and 11–15 years).ResultsThe mean Qmax value in healthy female children aged 5–15 years (21.8 ± 8.6 mL/s) was significantly higher than in male children (17.98 ± 6.1 mL/s) (p = .003). VV, Qmax, and Qavg values of the children in the 11–15 age group were significantly higher than those in the age group of 5–10 years (p > .05 for each). VV, Qmax, and Qavg values were directly proportional to age (p = .0001, for each).ConclusionsWe believe that this study adds to the limited knowledge base regarding normal flow patterns in healthy children.
Although children have prompted and participated in numerous acts of protest and advocacy, their words and labors are more likely to be dismissed than discussed as serious activism. Whether treated ...disparagingly by antagonistic audiences or lauded as symbols of hope by sympathetic ones, children and teens are rarely considered capable organizers and advocates for change. In Just Kids, Risa Applegarth investigates youth-organized activism from the 1990s to the present, asking how young people have leveraged age as a rhetorical resource, despite material and rhetorical barriers that limit their access to traditional forms of electoral power. Through case studies of antinuclear activism, im/migration activism, and activism for gun reform, this book reveals how childhood both limits and enables rhetorical possibility for young people. Drawing on interviews and focus group discussions with activists, Applegarth probes how participants understand the success and failure of their efforts beyond the immediate moment of impact. Methodologically innovative, Just Kids develops a framework of reflexive agency to make sense of how participants’ activism has mattered over time within their lives and communities.
