•We quantified the textual information of the peer annual report into an emotional tone.•We demonstrate two channels: information mechanisms and competition mechanisms.•We discern two boundary ...conditions: the information supply of peer firms and the degree of industry competition.
In this study, we investigate the relationship between the tone of annual reports of peer firms and the innovation investment of focal firms based on data from Chinese listed companies. We demonstrate that the tone of the annual reports of peer companies promotes innovation and investment by focusing on companies through two channels: information mechanisms and competition mechanisms. This conclusion is robust after overcoming endogeneity problems and carrying out robustness tests. We discern two boundary conditions in our research: the information supply of peer firms and the degree of industry competition. When the information supply of peer firms and the degree of industry complexity are higher, the tone of the annual reports of peer firms will play a greater role in promoting the innovation investment of focal firms. This study extends the research on the information disclosure of peer firms and firm innovation investment based on the context of emerging markets.
In this study, we examine the effect of ex‐military Chief Executive Officers (CEO)s on the readability of 10‐Ks. Using the Bog Index as a measure of readability, we find that firms run by ex‐military ...CEOs have much more readable financial reports, mainly because of the words used in these financial reports. Ex‐military CEOs also have a moderating effect—we find that their leadership lessens the adverse effects of loss and business complexity on the 10‐K's readability. These results are consistent with the view that ex‐military CEOs resist the temptation to obfuscate negative news and may communicate complexity in operations more clearly. Overall, our findings indicate a possible behavioral explanation for why some firms have more readable annual reports.
Purpose: Continuous annual reporting on coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgical practice is key for quality control and improvement of clinical results. In this report, Japanese nationwide ...features and trends in the extent of coronary artery disease and the characteristics of those undergoing CABG procedures in 2019 are presented. Clinical results of related ischemic heart disease are also presented. Methods and Results: The Japanese Cardiovascular Surgery Database (JCVSD) is a nationwide surgical case registry system. Data regarding CABG cases in the year 2019 (1 January–31 December) were captured with questionnaires regularly administered by the Japanese Association for Coronary Artery Surgery (JACAS). We analyzed trends in the number and types of grafts selected according to the number of diseased vessels in patients undergoing CABG. We also analyzed descriptive clinical results of those undergoing surgery for acute myocardial infarction or ischemic mitral regurgitation. Conclusions: This is the second publication summarizing the results following the JACAS annual report based on JCVSD Registry data from the year 2019. Clinical outcomes and surgical strategy trends were relatively stable. Further accumulation of information with a similar data collection system is expected.
Using the data from disclosed information on the top 5 suppliers and annual report tone by Chinese A-share listed firms, this article examines the impact of supplier's annual report tone on ...enterprise inventory efficiency. We find that the more positive the tone of the supplier's annual report, the more efficient the company's inventory. That is, the more positive the tone of the supplier's annual report, the less inventory the enterprise holds and the shorter the inventory holding time. It shows that the tone of suppliers' annual reports has a positive spillover effect on the efficiency of firms' inventory. Our results still hold after a battery of additional tests.
Disclosure is the soul of supervision, the bridge between companies and investors, and can help public fully understand companies’ business operations. The disclosure quality of listed companies’ ...annual reports affects security market efficiency and investor rights protection. Currently, there are issues including but not limited to contradictory information and avoidance of important problems. Moreover, the qualities of disclosure reports from different companies vary greatly. This paper is to focus on annual reports of listed companies, dividing them into two categories based on the assessment results of disclosure by the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, and conducting the research on textual characteristics. Firstly, three characteristic indicators, tone, readability, and file size of each annual report are analyzed and compared, with validation. To explore the impact of characteristic indicators on text classification, these three indicators are introduced into text models, constructing comprehensive models. To achieve dimension reduction for training models, feature selection is performed by using Chi-square statistics. Different lengths keywords dictionaries are constructed. In conclusion, prediction performance of classifier models can be improved or maintained after introducing indicators, with the random forest model having the best improvement after introduction of indicators.
