Chernozems or mollisols/black soils are 'reference soils' with a high content of organic matter, which ensures a high level of crop yield. In the article, we describe the structural characteristics ...of a typical medium‐thick Chernozem taken from Kursk region and their improvement via treatment by a 1 wt% aqueous solution/suspension of interpolyelectrolyte complex (IPEC), a product of electrostatic interaction between anionic potassium humates and cationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride). The native Chernozem and polymer‐treated chernozem were characterized by laser diffraction, dry and wet sieving methods, transmission electron microscopy, soil washoff in a hydraulic erosion tray, gravimetry, visual control, and vegetation miniaturization in Petri dishes with the following main conclusions: (a) Deposition of a positively charged IPEC over the Chernozem sample led to an increase in a total amount of agronomically valuable 0.25–1 mm aggregates up to 28% in comparison with a 3% content of aggregates in the native Chernozem. (b) An average diameter of the air‐dry aggregates, treated by a cationic IPEC, was of 5.5 mm (cf. with 2.5 mm for the untreated). (c) An average diameter of the IPEC‐treated water‐resistant aggregates was of 2.1 mm (cf. with 0.5 for the untreated). (d) The Chernozem pretreated by the cationic IPEC showed a minimum removal of soil during several cycles of rewatering/drying. (e) All IPEC formulations, stimulated the growth of plants. The results are of interest for preparing low‐toxic polymer formulations capable of effective stabilizing fertile Chernozem soils.
In the projects of anti-erosion protection in the Czech Republic, USLE was used as a standard tool for evaluating the risk of water erosion. The precision of the resulting USLE values is defined by ...the quality of input data and algorithms used. Two methods for LS factor calculation are recommended for use in the planning practice in the Czech Republic: the computing method based on the USLE 2D software and the other computing methods. Various methods can assess the LS factor; however, their results differ. On the example of the Starovice – Hustopeče study area (Czech Republic), strongly threatened by erosion, this report aimed to show the differences brought using these differing methods of LS factor assessment, all in two variants before and after application of anti-erosion measures (retention grass belts, grassed thalweg). Changes in the calculation of the LS factor were directly reflected in the calculation of the long-term average soil loss by water erosion.
The communication presents the pieces of information of the ecosystem services estimation of the four research localities transformed from an arable land to vegetation features—bosks. These bosks ...should dispose several ecological functions, primarily anti-erosion measures, additionally the local biodiversity increase, unfavorable microclimate mitigation, shelter provision for small game, birds and insects, or wood and fruit production, etc. One of these benefits, the biodiversity increase, can be evaluated using the Habitat Valuation Method (HVM) and expressed by the financial value obtained on the basis of a combination of expert valuation and cost replacement method. The various combinations of local woody plants and bushes within the project Multifunction anti-erosion measures as a part of adaptable landscape were planted or sown at the project localities (South Moravia and Žďárské vrchy, Czech Republic) in March 2019. Ecosystem services evaluation was one of the fundamental outcomes of the project. The most important result was the calculated value increase of the service termed “environment for the species life providing and genetic diversity conserving”. The increase means the difference between the state prior to planting and the expected target state after 30 years as specified in HVM. In total, the increase of this ecosystem service of the four bosks was valued at 2,633,809.64 CZK (97,206.48 EUR/114,399.06 USD).
Hazards due to riverbank erosion, despite being considered usually as a natural phenomenon, have become a critical problem in recent times as introduction of new technology and one-sided ...engineering-based solution approach to combat natural hazards without taking into account of opinions of all categories of stakeholders, particularly of the hazard victims and policy makers, has aggravated the problem in many cases. The riverbank erosion hazard aggravated as a direct consequence of construction of Farakka Barrage on its upstream and downstream on the river Ganga has seriously affected the lifestyles of the people in the districts of Malda and Murshidabad in the state of West Bengal in India. In this paper, an attempt has been made to study the perceptions of different groups of stakeholders, particularly hazard victims and authority responsible for monetary investment, about causes of riverbank erosion and possible preventive and remedial measures required to solve such a complex and multi-dimensional problem. A questionnaire-based household survey has been conducted on a number of important issues of the problem among the directly affected hazard victims at a highly erosion-prone area in the Malda district. Different perceptions and their impacts on selection and implementation of anti-erosion measures are critically studied. Analysis of data as obtained from the representative sample of erosion victims as well as the secondary sources of data clearly indicates that the hazard victims are to face bad effects because of existence of perception gap and that a holistic approach considering the perception of erosion victims needs to be undertaken for a permanent solution of the problem.

Soil Erosion in Burundi
In the last few years, extensive measures were taken to combat soil erosion in Burundi. Erosion quantification, based on the study of experimental run off plots and the ...application of Wischmeier’s equation shows that the agricultural methods employed on slopes which are too steep and without any protection for the soils cause severe erosion.
Still, Wischmeier’s equation has turned to be an impractical instrument for the conditions prevailing in Burundi. The steepness and the length of the slopes and the easy water saturation of the soils favor rill wash and gully erosion instead of the sheet wash which Wischmeier’s equation is more able to evaluate. Therefore, a precise study of the erosion mechanisms involved is necessary.
In spite of this, theoretical reflection has led to a more practical approach of the technical problems. The new anti-erosion policy tends to replace the digging of protective ditches by biological methods and hedge planting to slow and filter the run off.
Les dernières années ont vu un regain d’activité de la lutte anti-érosive au Burundi. La quantification de l’érosion, basée sur l’étude de parcelles expérimentales et l’application de l’équation universelle des pertes de terre de Wischmeier démontre que les méthodes agricoles pratiquées sur des pentes trop fortes et en l’absence de protection des sols provoquent une érosion importante.
Pourtant l’équation de Wischmeier se révèle être un instrument peu pratique dans les conditions du Burundi. La raideur du système de pentes, la facile saturation en eau des sols favorisent le ruissellement concentré et l’érosion en rigoles aux dépens du ruissellement diffus, qui est le mieux appréhendé par l’équation universelle des pertes de terre. Une étude fine des processus d’érosion s’avère indispensable.
Malgré tout, la réflexion théorique a débouché sur une approche plus pragmatique des problèmes techniques. La nouvelle lutte anti-érosive privilégie les méthodes biologiques et l’établissement d’obstacles filtres comme des haies alors qu’on se limitait jusqu’à présent à creuser des fossés.

Using materials from recycling is a key part of decreasing present-day waste. It is optimal for recycled material to be used in environmental protection. This paper presents the application of ...geotextile ropes in erosion protection of a slope of a gravel pit. To protect the slope, thick ropes with a diameter of 120 mm made from wool and a mixture of recycled natural and synthetic fibers were used. After 47 months from installation, soil and rope specimens were taken from the slope parts with inclinations 1:1 and 1:1.8, and their physical and mechanical properties were determined. Direct shear tests were applied to determine the soil shear strength parameters in state at sampling and at I
= 0 (unconsolidated and consolidated). Based on the obtained soil shear strength parameters, the loads on the ropes were determined, taking into account also unfavorable hydraulic conditions and compared to rope strength. It was shown that even after 47 months from installation, rope tension strength was higher as tension forces were induced in the ropes in every case. At present, whole slopes in protected sections are stabilized, without rills and gullies.
Dans le milieu aride et semi-aride tunisien, les aménagements de conservation des eaux et du sol jouent un rôle important dans la collecte et le stockage sur les versants des eaux de ruissellement. ...Cependant l'impact de ces aménagements sur les écoulements reste mal connu. Pour évaluer l'impact de banquettes à rétention totale à l'échelle d'un bassin versant situé au centre de la Tunisie, en zone semi-aride, nous nous proposons dans cet article d'utiliser le modèle géomorphologique H2U, fonction de transfert basée sur la répartition des chemins de l'eau à la surface du bassin. Pour la reconstitution des crues, ce modèle a été couplé à une fonction de production qui définit la pluie nette (lame ruisselée) à partir de la hauteur précipitée sur le bassin versant.
Entre juillet 96 et juillet 97, le bassin versant d'El Gouazine (18,1 km2) a été aménagé en banquettes à rétention totale. La longueur moyenne de ces banquettes est d'environ 100 m pour une hauteur moyenne de 1,50 m. L'écartement moyen entre les banquettes est de 25 m. La superficie aménagée sur le bassin versant est de 783 hectares, soit 43 % de sa superficie. Cet aménagement a intéressé principalement les terres de culture et une partie des parcours dégradés transformés à cette occasion en terres de culture. Dès lors, sur ce bassin, les eaux de ruissellement sont interceptées par ces levées de terre et elles n'atteignent l'oued principal qu'après avoir rempli les fossés créés en amont des banquettes.
Avant l'aménagement en banquettes, le coefficient de ruissellement global du bassin versant était de l'ordre de 7 à 8 % pour les hauteurs de pluie inférieures à 20 mm et compris entre 20 et 30% pour les hauteurs de pluie supérieures à 20 mm. Les pluies d'automne (septembre - octobre) présentaient les coefficients de ruissellement les plus forts car elles sont caractérisées par des intensités très élevées et les sols ne sont pas encore couverts par les végétations naturelles et cultivées. Ils présentent alors des croûtes de battance qui limitent l'infiltration des eaux de ruissellement. Le calage du modèle H2U (fonctions de transfert et de production associée) sur 12 crues avant aménagement a fourni une pluie d'imbibition initiale de 10 mm, une intensité limite pour l'apparition de ruissellement de 3,6 mm.h-1, un coefficient de ruissellement efficace de 42 % et un temps moyen de parcours de l'ordre de 40 minutes. Le modèle a été par la suite validé pour la crue du 20 septembre 1995. Les critères d'ajustement sont bons pour le calage et pour la validation.
Le critère de Nash appliqué aux débits ruisselés est de 0,62 à 0,96 pour le calage et de 0,96 pour la validation.
Après l'aménagement, les pluies enregistrées n'ont engendré qu'un faible ruissellement : un coefficient de ruissellement compris entre 1 à 3% pour les pluies de 30 à 50 mm, un coefficient de ruissellement de 9% pour une pluie de 80 mm (24 septembre 1998). L'utilisation du modèle H2U nous a permis d'évaluer l'impact des banquettes en comparant directement les crues observées avec aménagement et les crues reconstituées par le modèle sans aménagement. Ainsi la pluie du 24 septembre 1998, de fréquence décennale, a-t-elle engendré un ruissellement 4 fois plus faible avec l'aménagement en banquettes, un débit maximum 8 fois plus faible et un temps de réponse 4 fois plus fort. Malgré son extension limitée à 43 % de la surface du bassin d'El Gouazine, l'aménagement anti-érosif en banquettes joue donc un rôle très important sur la rétention des eaux de ruissellement, au point de limiter considérablement, de 50 à 80 %, les apports dans la retenue du petit barrage collinaire. Il convient donc de trouver, pour chaque bassin versant de la dorsale tunisienne, une solution optimale à l'aménagement des terres cultivées sur les versants tout en conservant des apports suffisants aux lacs collinaires pour subvenir aux besoins en eau des cultures irriguées. Pour caler le modèle H2U et sa fonction de production sur des bassins versants aménagés, une meilleure analyse du fonctionnement hydrologique d'un système de banquettes en cascade semble donc nécessaire.
