Ten Greek sheep breeds were analysed at 28 microsatellite markers in order to estimate their genetic diversity and differentiation. 0.05). The results of the phylogenetic relationships are in accordance with the geographical location of the breeds, the history of the origin of the breeds and the breeding practices. The phylogenetic tree showed three groupings according to the bootstrapping values. Correspondence analysis showed the isolation of the Skopelos breed and the grouping of Sfakia and Anogeiano breeds in a separate cluster.

Objective
—To evaluate the breed distribution of the ABCB1-1Δ polymorphism in a large number of dogs in North America, including dogs of several herding breeds in which this polymorphism has ...been detected and other breeds in which this polymorphism has not yet been identified.
Design
—Cross-sectional study.
Animals
—5,368 dogs from which buccal swab samples were collected for purposes of ABCB1 genotyping.
Procedures
—From May 1, 2004, to September 30, 2007, DNA specimens derived from buccal swab samples collected from 5,368 dogs underwent ABCB1 genotyping. These data were reviewed, and results for each dog were recorded in a spreadsheet, along with the dog's breed. The genotypes for each breed were tallied by use of a sorting function.
Results
—The ABCB1-1Δ allele was identified in 9 breeds of dogs and in many mixed-breed dogs. Breeds that had the ABCB1-1Δ allele included Collie, Longhaired Whippet, Australian Shepherd (standard and miniature), Shetland Sheepdog, Old English Sheepdog, Border Collie, Silken Windhound, and German Shepherd Dog (a breed in which this mutation had not been detected previously).
Conclusions and Clinical Relevance
—The ABCB1-1Δ polymorphism is associated with increased susceptibility to many adverse drug reactions and with suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and is present in many herding breeds of dog. Veterinarians should be familiar with the breeds that have the ABCB1-1Δ polymorphism to make appropriate pharmacologic choices for these patients.
The aim of this study was to analyze, through the use of microsatellite molecular markers, the genetic diversity and variability of nine Alpine sheep breeds reared in Italy (Bergamasca, Biellese, ...Schwarzbraunes Bergschaf, Tiroler Bergschaf, and Schnalserschaf), Germany (Brillenschaf and Weisses Bergschaf) and Slovenia (Bovška and Jezerzkǒ-Solčavska), and one Italian crossbreed population. Allelic richness was rather high in each breed highlighting a considerable genetic diversity. However, the study evidenced a significant departure from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium in all analyzed breeds caused by a heterozygote deficiency. Such lack seems to be caused both to the presence of population substructure within breed and to a rather high level of inbreeding. The genetic differentiation among breed was rather low (

The clustering analysis performed with STRUCTURE detected the presence of eight clusters; Schwarzbraunes Bergschaf and Tiroler Bergschaf were grouped together and Biellese and Bergamasca as well, evidencing a high similarity of their genetic make up. Reynolds’ genetic distance estimates confirmed the close relationship between these pairs of breeds. Moreover, Bovška, Jezerzkǒ-Solčavska and Brillenschaf resulted rather similar as expected according to their region of origin and to their common ancestors. Molecular coancestry confirmed as well such findings, suggesting that the studied breeds had origin from different ancestral populations. Concluding, microsatellite resulted a useful tool to investigate breed variability and to characterize Alpine sheep breeds. Obtained findings suggest the need to set up a conservation plan aiming to safeguard and increase the genetic variability of the studied breeds compromised by the high level of inbreeding. Microsatellites genotyping could help to monitor breed variability and to organize matings.

Large White (DLW). The chemical compositions of the main meat flavour precursors of the longissimus muscle from all six breeds were also examined. Distinct differences in amino acid composition and fatty acid composition of longissimus muscle, between the breeds, were observed. Among all six breeds, LW and RC had the highest intramuscular fat content and the lowest crude protein content; DLW had the lowest longissimus muscle fat content and the highest crude protein content. One-way analysis of variance showed that 23 volatile compounds were significantly affected by breed. Sensory analysis indicated that cooked longissimus muscle from DLW had the lowest pork flavour intensity and flavour-liking, compared with the Chinese indigenous breeds. LW and HB showed the highest pork flavour intensity and flavour-liking in cooked longissimus muscle.
Guinea pigs have historically been used as a food source and are also an important model for studying the human intestines. Fasting is the act of temporarily stopping the intake of food. This process ...can alter the microbiota of various animals. This study is the first to investigate the impact of fasting on the cecum microbiome of three guinea pig breeds. We investigated the impact of fasting on the microbiome population structure in the cecum of three guinea pig breeds. This was done by sequencing and analyzing the V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene in bacterial communities found in cecum mucosa samples. To achieve this, we established two treatment groups (fasting and fed), for each of the three guinea pig breeds: Andina, Inti, and Peru. The study involved twenty-eight guinea pigs, which were divided into the following groups: Andina-fed (five), Andina-fasting (five), Inti-fed (four), Inti-fasting (five), Peru-fed (five), and Peru-fasting (four). The results indicated a significant difference in beta diversity between the treatment groups for the Peru breed (
-value = 0.049), but not for the treatment groups of the Andina and Inti breeds. The dominant phyla across all groups were Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. We observed variations in the abundance of different taxa in the cecum microbiota when comparing the treatment groups for each breed. Additionally, there was a higher number of unique taxa observed in the fasting groups compared to the fed groups. We discovered that the genus
was the only one present in all fasting groups across all breeds. Despite the findings, the resilience of the gut microbiome was not challenged in all three breeds, which can lead to disruptive changes that may affect the overall maintenance of the cecum microbiome. Based on the observed differences in the treatment groups of the Peru breed, it can be suggested that fasting has a greater impact on this particular breed.
Abstract The primary aim of pig breeding efforts is to produce animals characterized by outstanding performance, including also fattening and slaughter performance traits. However, improved carcass ...leanness and reduced carcass fatness, especially intramuscular fat content, have led to a deterioration of pork quality and processability. Due to the growing frequency of meat defects and the limited potential use of such meat in the production of premium products this constitutes a considerable problem for the meat industry. The breeds superior in terms of meat quality are native pig breeds, such as those kept in Poland, i.e. Pulawska (Pul), Zlotnicka Spotted (ZS) and Zlotnicka White (ZW) pigs. The aim of this paper is to present a review of research results concerning quality and processability of meat produced by the Polish native pig breeds. The presented results indicate that pigs of local breeds exhibit a low level of performance traits (daily gain, carcass leaness, backfat thickness) while maintaining very good parameters of meat quality and processability (muscle composition and physical properties, fatty acids profile, sensory traits). Thus, they are used as a source material for premium products. In view of the small size of local populations and higher production costs in Poland it is a niche production. Therefore, the current aim of breeding indigenous breeds is both to maintain a safe population size and genetic diversity and to increase popularity of their meat and processed meat products among consumers. This objective is attained, among other things, thanks to efforts to reduce of cost on their production through optimization of environmental conditions and wider use of less expensive traditional feed formulations, which make it possible to fully utilize the potential of local pork resources.
Improved understanding of longevity represents a significant welfare opportunity for the domestic dog, given its unparalleled morphological diversity. Epidemiological research using electronic ...patient records (EPRs) collected from primary veterinary practices overcomes many inherent limitations of referral clinic, owner questionnaire and pet insurance data. Clinical health data from 102,609 owned dogs attending first opinion veterinary practices (n=86) in central and southeast England were analysed, focusing on 5095 confirmed deaths.
Of deceased dogs with information available, 3961 (77.9%) were purebred, 2386 (47.0%) were female, 2528 (49.8%) were neutered and 1105 (21.7%) were insured. The overall median longevity was 12.0years (IQR 8.9–14.2). The longest-lived breeds were the Miniature poodle, Bearded collie, Border collie and Miniature dachshund, while the shortest-lived were the Dogue de Bordeaux and Great Dane. The most frequently attributed causes of death were neoplastic, musculoskeletal and neurological disorders. The results of multivariable modelling indicated that longevity in crossbred dogs exceeded purebred dogs by 1.2years (95% confidence interval 0.9–1.4; P<0.001) and that increasing bodyweight was negatively correlated with longevity. The current findings highlight major breed differences for longevity and support the concept of hybrid vigour in dogs.
This study investigated the effect of host genetics on the structure and composition of the cecum microbiota of three breeds of guinea pigs: Andina, Inti, and Peru. Fifteen guinea pigs were ...distributed into three groups according to their breed: Andina (5), Inti (5), and Peru (5). We discovered that four main phyla were shared between the three breeds: Bacteroidota, Firmicutes, Spirochaetota, and Synergistota. Although there were no significant differences in the alpha and beta diversity analysis, we found that the Linear discriminant analysis effect size and the heat tree analysis showed significant differences between the abundance of several taxa present in the cecum microbiome of the three breeds. These results suggest that host genetics could be a factor in the structure and composition of the guinea pig cecum microbiome. In addition, we found unique genera for each breed that have fermentation capacity and, therefore can be analyzed in further studies to determine if there is a functional relationship between them and the breed and its industrial profile.

Pedigree information was analyzed in 7 small populations of sheep raised in France (Bleu du Maine, Charmoise, Cotentin, on-farm Romanov, Romanov ex situ in vivo, Roussin de la Hague, Solognote) to ...estimate their genetic variability. The pedigree information for each breed, estimated by the number of equivalent generations traced, ranged from rather poor (4.6) to very good (10.5) when compared with other studies. On the basis of probabilities of gene origin, the effective number of ancestors ranged from 17 (on-farm Romanov breed) to 59 (Bleu du Maine). On the basis of the rate of inbreeding, the realized effective size was found to range from 65 (Romanov breed ex situ) to 231 (Bleu du Maine). The average kinship coefficients between rams from which semen doses are available in the French National Cryobank and the active ram and ewe populations were also computed. Results found in each breed were analyzed by taking into consideration the demographic evolution of the breeds, their management practices, and the use of cryopreservation as a way to preserve genetic variability. It appeared quite clear that, in populations in which AI with frozen semen is seldom used, factors that mainly affect the genetic variability are the female-to-male ratio, which should be as small as possible, and the number of reproducing female offspring by males, which should be as balanced as possible. Finally, our work showed that all populations under study have fairly good genetic variability in comparison with other species, despite their scarce numbers.
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being increasingly viewed as valuable tools to aid the management of farms. This kind of technology can be particularly useful in the context of extensive cattle ...farming, as production areas tend to be expansive and animals tend to be more loosely monitored. With the advent of deep learning, and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in particular, extracting relevant information from aerial images has become more effective. Despite the technological advancements in drone, imaging and machine learning technologies, the application of UAVs for cattle monitoring is far from being thoroughly studied, with many research gaps still remaining. In this context, the objectives of this study were threefold: (1) to determine the highest possible accuracy that could be achieved in the detection of animals of the Canchim breed, which is visually similar to the Nelore breed (
); (2) to determine the ideal ground sample distance (GSD) for animal detection; (3) to determine the most accurate CNN architecture for this specific problem. The experiments involved 1853 images containing 8629 samples of animals, and 15 different CNN architectures were tested. A total of 900 models were trained (15 CNN architectures × 3 spacial resolutions × 2 datasets × 10-fold cross validation), allowing for a deep analysis of the several aspects that impact the detection of cattle using aerial images captured using UAVs. Results revealed that many CNN architectures are robust enough to reliably detect animals in aerial images even under far from ideal conditions, indicating the viability of using UAVs for cattle monitoring.
