•A comparative analysis is proposed with three territorial levels of study.•The compensation and potentiation works are formally punctual (Local level) and linear (Metropolitan and Cross-border ...regional level)•The referendum is a valid instrument for the construction of megaprojects.•Long-term articulated policies have an impact on empowering the Gotthard system.•Financing processes must be well structured with participatory mechanisms.
The Gotthard transalpine base tunnel is located in Switzerland, it is considered the longest in the world. The purpose of this research is to detect the main effects of long-term policies on the occupation and transformation of cross-border land, in productive, industrial and commercial uses, due to the construction of the Saint Gotthard base tunnel, and the complementary works that enhance it. There are three levels of study proposed, three temporary scenarios (before, during and after the construction) and a comparative analysis with the future Lyon-Turin base tunnel. Maps are made with geodata from Switzerland, Italy and France and interviews with experts by class groups, this was essential to obtain a broader vision of the situation to be analyzed, it is concluded that the use of mixed methods proved to be useful for the stated objectives. A greater displacement of the impact at cross-border levels between Switzerland and Italy is demonstrated, with 43,776.6 ha of productive, industrial and commercial use, in relation to the cross-border areas between Italy and France of 15,593.6 ha related to the Lyon-Turin tunnel. Two types of compensation and empowerment works of the Gotthard System are identified and advantages in formulating long-term articulated policies and well-structured financing processes with participatory mechanisms. This research contributes to the current literature, aimed at researchers and policymakers on intermodal transport as a response to sustainable logistics.
Logistics activities contribute to a large part of land consumption. For various reasons, logistics is being noticeably pushed out of urban areas. The selection of the location is a decisive starting ...point for savings in mileage and thus CO2 savings, though.
Therefore, an approach is presented here which qualifies land parcels for logistics use on regional planning level. Economic location factors, proximity-related location factors, accessibility-related location factors and the compatibility of potential logistics facilities to adjacent land uses are thereby investigated for each land parcel. This evaluation is done for five different types of logistics locations, taking into account the respective relevant location factors. The results for the regional distribution centres show that there is need for action and further research.
The article deals with the current issues of combined transport; at the beginning, the crucial terms and definitions are stated. Combined transport is evaluated on the basis of statistics in the ...Czech Republic. According to these statistics, combined transport has a rising tendency, although the potential has not been fully utilized. The article defines reasons why carriers might choose only road transport. Problems of the utilization of combined transport from the carriers´ point of view are mentioned; increased demand for organization and carriage in particular. Furthermore, it focuses on modern trends in combined transport, especially in terms of modern technologies and the utilization of informatics systems. In the conclusion, the article also presents a method of economic evaluation of combined transport on the basis of its cost comparison with road transport.
Combined rail-road transport, with its complex regulatory, infrastructural, organizational and technical environment, presents numerous opportunities for practical improvements and impactful ...research. A strengthening of this transport mode can serve rising transport demands and make freight transport more ecologically sustainable. Due to the complex nature of combined transport systems, there are various possibilities for improvement, of which a subset of 27 measures have been identified in a Delphi study. Synthesized with a systematic literature review for the last decade of combined transport research, a practice-oriented research agenda was developed, providing guidance for further research. Six research topics have been identified, ranging from the assessment of sustainability policies, digital platforms, seamless cross-border traffic, human factor, changing terminal roles and technological developments in rail transport.
In 2019, road transport was responsible for almost 72% of total greenhouse gas emissions from transport in the EU-28, and light- and heavy-duty vehicles accounted for 40% of it. Although combined ...road-rail transport offers a more environmentally sustainable alternative to unimodal road transport, in Europe it remains largely underused, with an average modal share of 18%, and its economic advantages are seldom studied. In order to shed some light on both issues, we analyse how the demand for combined transport has changed over time, and we show that, within the European context, the demand trend is highly heterogeneous. Our investigation of the policies implemented to support the uptake of combined transport reveals that they suffer from poor promotion and scarce cross-border coordination and that they do not effectively address the lack of competition characterizing this transport sector. Finally, we describe a case study of an Italian company successfully shifting its incoming shipments from unimodal road transport to combined transport. We summarize the feasibility study we carried out to evaluate the economic benefits arising from the modal shift, and we report the cost reduction, transport time, punctuality and environmental performance of the combined transport service actually used by the firm compared to the unimodal one. Via this modal shift, the company was able to significantly reduce not only the generalized transport costs of its shipments but also the related negative externalities. However, the logistic reorganization adopted by the company was mainly due to the management's proactive approach and the availability of tailor-made combined transport solutions designed by the partnered multimodal transport operator, with the policies implemented at the European and national level having little effect. We conclude by proposing some remedies to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the current transport policies, including information campaigns on the benefits achievable by both carriers and shippers via the modal shift and an ex-post evaluation and cost-effectiveness analysis of the policies implemented to support combined transport.
This paper starts with the status quo of port container development in Fujian Province, expounds the problems existing in the development of port container sea-rail combined transport in Fujian ...Province, analyzes the significance of developing container sea-rail combined transport, uses computer technology to assist in building a port-sea combined transport information system, and finally proposes that the port of Fujian Province accelerates the container sea. Several suggestions for the development of rail transport.
The article presented the issue of securing semi-trailer trucks and trailers during their transport using intermodal railway wagons as a part of combined transport. This issue was analysed in ...different operational conditions related to loading level, cross-winds influence, inertia forces due to the emergency braking, and track curvature. According to general rules of loading and securing cargo, described in the internal and UIC regulations, the transported load should be positioned and secured with minimised risk of undesirable displacement or rolling over during transport. Basic analysis showed that adverse conditions such as strong winds or emergency braking may require adequate additional cargo protection. The lack thereof may result in a severe accident or damage to the transported vehicle or the nearby structures. The presented results for generic road and railway freight vehicles showed that the required anti-rollover torque for a semi-trailer mounted on the railway wagon platform may differ considerably (almost four times at the same maximum tested airflow speed) depending on the conditions related to aerodynamic and inertia influence. The potential weaknesses of the analysis relate to the impracticality of experimental tests for roll-over (or derailment) events under high levels of cross-wind, due to economic and safety reasons. The analysis can be extended in the future by including unsteady aerodynamic forces and a full-vehicle model based on the multi-body method for a specific design solution.
Sustainable development of the transport industry can be provided through the introduction of combined transport systems. And one of the most promising ones is the train ferry transport system which ...combines railway and marine transport facilities. The article deals with the analysis and systematization of the data on the historical development of train ferry routes and describes the background for the construction of train ferry routes and their advantages over other combined transport types. It also deals with the basic features of the train ferries operating on the main international train ferry routes. The study is concerned with both sea routes and routes across rivers and lakes. The article shows the role of train ferry routes in the improvement of a national economy, and in the provision of the military defense, as it was described by Vinogradov at the example of Saratovskaya Pereprava (route) and by Karakashly and Shklyaruk at the example of the lighter Ishimbay which was loaded from the side. The authors have analyzed the development of the train ferry routes serviced by the ice-breaking train ferries Baikal across Lake Baikal, and the ferries Sakhalin linked mainland Russia and Sakhalin Island. The article deals with the peculiarities of transportation by trains ferries in the USA, Japan, Azerbaijan, Dagestan, Germany, Lithuania, and some other countries, and presents the analysis of the operational features of Ukrainian train ferries which connect Ukraine with Bulgaria, Georgia, and Turkey. Besides, the article describes some peculiarities of the loading and transportation of passenger trains by train ferries. The study deals with structural peculiarities, and processing technology used for modern train ferries operating across the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea and the Baltic Sea. The research is based on the analysis of works by Egorov (the Marine Engineering Bureau, Ukraine). The research emphasizes the importance of train ferry transportation for the sustainable development of national economies including the economy of Ukraine.
Based on an analysis of the developments to date, this article originates from and then substantiates long-discussed approaches of a fast, periodic unaccompanied combined rail freight transport ...network for Germany that corresponds to the target modal split. A four-stage scenario of a market entry is developed. The presented solution incorporates potentially novel aspects such as a network design based on the Deutschlandtakt Cargo integrated periodic timetable framework, the prospective quantity structures as of 2030, and a segmentation for a route-specific mix of two major shipping container types. The set of assessment indicators derived by the model allows to gain insights on the achievable capacities and service levels versus the addressable freight transport demand as well as consequential cost/benefit functions.
