This is an open access book. It draws from relevant theories and approaches to teachers’ professional development (TPD) and innovative and inspiring TPD practices in higher education. It first lays a ...solid foundation for the rest of the book, through critiquing prevalent theories, approaches, and teaching competency frameworks guiding TPD in higher education, and defining the key concepts related to TPD. The book then develops a standard framework and assessment instrument of teaching competencies as well as ways of using this framework by institutions, departments at different levels, and individual teachers. It also proposes strategies for improving teachers’ teaching competencies by reviewing what has been achieved to date in TPD in terms of national-level policies and strategies, institutional-level interventions, and teachers’ self-directed professional development. Finally, it also presents case studies of typical practices in TPD in different countries.
Objective
The objective of this project was to develop core competencies in pain assessment and management for prelicensure health professional education. Such core pain competencies common to all ...prelicensure health professionals have not been previously reported.
Methods
An interprofessional executive committee led a consensus‐building process to develop the core competencies. An in‐depth literature review was conducted followed by engagement of an interprofessional Competency Advisory Committee to critique competencies through an iterative process. A 2‐day summit was held so that consensus could be reached.
Results
The consensus‐derived competencies were categorized within four domains: multidimensional nature of pain, pain assessment and measurement, management of pain, and context of pain management. These domains address the fundamental concepts and complexity of pain; how pain is observed and assessed; collaborative approaches to treatment options; and application of competencies across the life span in the context of various settings, populations, and care team models. A set of values and guiding principles are embedded within each domain.
Conclusions
These competencies can serve as a foundation for developing, defining, and revising curricula and as a resource for the creation of learning activities across health professions designed to advance care that effectively responds to pain.
The results of the investigation are presented, which consisted of proposing a model for the evaluation of digital, informational and media competencies that contribute to the digital transformation ...process. A bibliometric review was carried out, for the identification of relevant dimensions and variables, which, focused on human resources, make it possible to evaluate the state of the competency gaps, to actively participate in the digital transformation process of an organization, considering its state. of digital maturity, from the perspective of the employee and the technologies available. The result of a structured model, its premises and evaluation instruments, which integrates a set of validated elements, will allow the development of actions to achieve the desired state in the digital transformation based on people's competencies.

Digitalisation and the innovative economy have generated many social processes and transformations, and set many tasks. These changes were especially clearly reflected in the professional activities ...of the commercial sector heads. Today, they can no longer perform their duties effectively, having only general cultural and professional competencies in their portfolio. The formation of different, new type competencies is required. However, we are not talking about disparate, separate skills and abilities, the sporadic description of which is found in professional standards or requirements for vacancies in the positions of top managers. There is a need for the formation and development of competencies among the heads of commercial organisations responsible for the birth of innovations and involvement in the processes of the innovative economy. Sociological researchers are faced with the tasks of defining this concept, detailed description of innovative competences, their distinctive features from competences of other types, systematization and grouping. The article presents the author’s model of innovative competencies obtained as a result of sociological research “The role of innovative competencies in professional activity of managers of commercial organisations”. The model can serve as a basis for further research in this field and development of this direction of sociology.
In modern times, it has come to the realization of organizations that acquiring knowledge and using it in an effective manner is the only way to have a sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) in the ...marketplace. This means that the resources of an organization must include knowledge, which should always be cared for and developed upon. When it comes to private colleges and universities, these are really just investments for the future businesspeople of the world. Through knowledge management processes (KMP), the knowledge they end up processing from these educational institutions will help them decide the direction in which they go in the future and how competitive they will be in the business world. But when it comes to knowledge-based view (KBV) and resource-based view (RBV), there is no clear explanation between them and how much the competitive advantage that KMP provides can be sustained. In this study, we will look at how and why SCA can be created by KMP from the educational environment's KBV and RBV. In order to achieve the objective, a hypothesis was created along with a quantitative survey method of design. The initiation of the structural equation modelling (SEM) method helped determine the relationship between the study variables through deductive approach. The respondents of this study are comprised of 525 academic leaders with varying positions from 44 private Iraqi universities. The results show a significant relationship between KMP and SCA. To attain a better SCA, private universities must generate knowledge, store knowledge, share knowledge and apply knowledge that is backed by identify of knowledge and formulating of its goals throughout every aspect of the organization. The research adds to the active group of knowledge that is currently available in the area of strategic knowledge management.
Background/purpose - British, European and American universities are increasingly adopting competency-based learning, yet, there are different and conflicting definitions of competence, competency, ...and competency-based learning. Consequently, multiple interpretations and understandings are held by educators in respect of what these terms mean, when applied to their own teaching and assessment practices. Therefore, unless informed and considered discussion has taken place amongst staff about their individual understandings and interpretations, any development of new, competency-based assessment processes and procedures, is necessarily problematic. The main purpose of the paper is to stimulate reflection and discussion, so that teaching staff can arrive at a common understanding and interpretation of what competency-based education is, so that they may develop appropriate, authentic and equitable assessment processes. Materials/methods - The methodology used was a systematic review of literature on competence, competency-based learning and the assessment of competency-based learning. Conclusion - This paper provides an overview of the main issues and tensions involved in clearly defining competency within higher education programmes and assessing competence, along with two clear recommendations for practice. The recommendations have significance for all higher education teaching staff involved in programmes of competency-based learning.
Over the last years, Information and Communication Technologies have played a substantial role in improving both the quality of life for people. However, their potential in education is still ...developing. In this regard, this paper provides a systematic review of the literature on digital competencies and teacher professional development from 2008 to 2018. The purpose of this study is identifying research trends and potential directions on this topic for future research. The method followed is based on the PRISMA Statement Guidelines for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis. After applying criteria of inclusion, exclusion and thematic belonging, in Scopus and Wos databases, the sample was constituted in 21 studies. The selected studies emphasise the importance of digital competence as one of the challenges facing teachers today, being mainly qualitative methodology studies. Among the conclusions we highlight that most of the selected studies reveal a lack of teacher training and insufficient ICT training.
PurposeThe aim of this article is to propose and test a structural model of relationships between generic and specific competencies and entrepreneurial competencies in order to assess students' ...learning.Design/methodology/approachThe study was carried out on a sample of 337 students enrolled on the entrepreneurship specialisation of the final bachelor's degree project course on the Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Management at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. A questionnaire was designed to gather information on students' perception of their level of acquisition of the different groups of competencies. The partial least squares (PLS) multivariate technique was used to analyse the model.FindingsThe results confirm that there are significant relationships between the different groups of competencies. Specifically, it shows that generic competencies influence specific competencies and that there is a strong relationship between systemic and professional competencies and entrepreneurial competencies. It also shows that the experience variable contributes positively to different competency groups, while the gender and age variables have no effect on the development of entrepreneurial competencies.Practical implicationsThe study provides relevant information to the academic world on different factors that affect competency development.Originality/valueThe analysis provides an innovative research and contributes knowledge on entrepreneurial competency acquisition, providing an answer to whether generic and specific competencies influence entrepreneurial competencies.
This paper qualitative examines a holistic framework for teaching in the digital era. The examination is based on teachers' perspectives of their career, that is, what core features can be said to ...characterise teacher's practice, across contexts, cultures and subjects. Semi-structured interviews of expert teachers, specifically from Australia, Europe and the Latin-America, are the main data source. The design process sought to examine teachers' approaches to their professional definition and their agency to enact this, against a theoretically validated framework. Results indicated the emergence of three defining categories based on the validation and synthesis of the relationships between six elements in the theoretical model.
