This study analyzed a social problem-solving workation in Kamaishi, Japan, focusing on the “hitohada nugu” experience, a cross-boundary and other-oriented contribution and relationship-building ...experience. The results of interviews with stakeholders of the work experience, including company managers and participants, intermediaries in the host local community, and government officials, as well as a questionnaire survey of all participants, indicated that employees who participated in the program learned and grew through their inexperience in Kamaishi, which was different from their work experience. On the other hand, the local community and companies that plan and operate the program face a dilemma in explaining the effects of the workation on the company's business, the solution to local issues, and the learning and growth of employees.
IT industry is one of the top priority areas for economic development not only in Russia, but also in other countries worldwide. The Russian government is pursuing a policy to promote the development ...of information technology in the country and support specialists in this field. The IT sphere is one of the most attractive among applicants, and the IT market volume shows stable growth. However, in the context of tightening Western sanctions and the aggravation of the political situation in February-March 2022, the Russian IT industry faced a massive outflow of qualified specialists from Russia. And although the problem of personnel shortage (including due to migration) has existed in Russia for a long time, the volume of the migration flow of IT specialists over the specified period was significant for the domestic IT industry. The author attempts to identify the reasons for the migration of IT specialists, considering various push and pull factors that exist in the context of the Russian IT market. To achieve this goal, the author conducted a semi-structured survey among representatives of the IT sector, including professionals who have already moved or are planning to move in the near future, as well as those who have decided to stay in Russia. Based on the results of the study, some particular and general factors for the migration of IT specialists were identified. In addition, the article gives the proposals of the interviewed specialists regarding state support for the IT industry.
Purpose The primary objective of the current study is to unveil this relatively new phenomenon in the context of travel and tourism. In line with this purpose, the study provides a comprehensive ...overview of the concept of digital nomadism through a tourism perspective, discusses the relationship between digital nomadism, travel and tourism, examines the opportunities and threats of digital nomadism, and finally uncovers its transformative impact. Design/methodology/approach This conceptual study examined secondary data, i.e. existing literature. In this data, the focus has been on the tourism aspect of the digital nomad phenomenon. Findings The results suggest that digital nomadism introduces a novel perspective on the nature of travel and tourism mobility, along with a distinct tourist typology characterized by unique traits. Moreover, the results indicate that, while digital nomadism contributes to the local economy and cultural change on the one hand, it poses challenges in terms of regulations and taxation on the other. In this context, one can conclude that legislators should establish regulations for the employment of digital nomads, while managers should engage in activities that attract potential digital nomads on an international scale. Originality/value The study comprehensively reviews relevant literature in various ways, conducts a conceptualization of digital nomad tourists and makes a noteworthy theoretical contribution within the context of tourism. It addresses the gaps in the existing literature, particularly in specific contexts such as the legal status of digital nomads, taxation, prevention of gentrification, cultural exchanges, identity transformation and the impact on travel and tourism.
Employees may wish to practice digital nomadism and thus work in different locations according to their migrations. While information and communication technologies make it possible today to work ...outside the company, it should not be forgotten that employees are under the legal subordination of their employer. They cannot therefore leave without a framework having been previously established with the employer, under penalty of being sanctioned by the latter. This framework is all the more important as frequent migrations of employees expose them to particular risks on their working conditions that must not be overlooked.
Digital nomadism is a rapidly growing lifestyle for living and working. Despite its potential transformative effect on destinations, little attention has been paid to destination communities in which ...digital nomads reside. This paper aims to examine the interface between the destination communities and digital nomadism: how the stakeholders in a destination community perceive and accommodate digital nomads. The case study comes from a popular European destination, the island of Gran Canaria, Spain. The study proposes an original supply side framework to theoretically inform the phenomenon of digital nomadism. Stakeholder theory is also applied to examine the interface between the local communities and the phenomenon. Applying the proposed conceptual framework, the results reveal a novel perspective on digital nomads, which is “new locals”. The results show that the accommodative strategies of local stakeholders correlate strongly with the stakeholder’s specializations, and include strategies such as: provider, communicator, integrator, and embracer.
Digital nomads are engaged in a complex quest to select their next destination. In this context, user-generated content (UGC) on social media is a pivotal source to glean insights into digital ...nomads' destination choices. Accordingly, this study investigates the principal topics that influence digital nomad's destination choice. To this end, data-mining techniques are applied to analyze user-generated content (UGC) from the social platform X (former Twitter). Based on the results, we identify a total of 11 topics associated with digital nomads' location preferences that can be grouped into 3 clusters (positive, negative, and neutral). Specifically, we find six positive topics (employment, retirement, gastronomy, co-working, work motivation, culture), one neutral topic (customer service), and four negative topics (connectivity, work hours, visa issues, loneliness). The results suggest that job flexibility, the attraction of travel, and cultural immersion emerge as positive factors influencing destination choice. By contrast, connectivity concerns, visa management, feelings of isolation, and emotional adjustments stand out as considerable impediments for digital nomads. We spotlight the long-term pursuit of quality of life and technological connectivity as the main drivers of digital nomads in their destination choice. The paper concludes with a formulation of 33 research questions related to digital nomad destination decisions to be addressed in further research.
•Quality of life and reliable tech infrastructure drive digital nomad decisions.•Social media UGC impact on digital nomads' destination perception and choice.•Connectivity and visa issues present major barriers for digital nomads.•Job flexibility and cultural immersion are key for digital nomads' choices.•Emotional well-being and social connections are critical for digital nomads.
Purpose The aim of the research is to reveal information with regard to being a digital nomad as a family. Within this brief, the aim is to provide information regarding the reasons for choosing the ...digital nomad lifestyle of families, the female and male thoughts regarding the experience, destination selection factors and the difficulties and conveniences of digital nomadism for family aspects. Design/methodology/approach The data were obtained through a semi-structured interview questionnaire with a British digital nomad family, individually from the wife and husband, using a qualitative research design in the scope of the phenomenological research. Findings It was determined that having a better lifestyle, being willing to spend more time with family and traveling with them were the reasons for becoming a digital nomad. The opinions of the woman and man are in parallel. While the main features of being a digital nomad are freedom and flexibility, having time to spend with family is also important. Factors for choosing a destination as a nomad were access to nature, quality of life, cost of living, quality of the food, climate, proximity to other families who are nomads and interest in nonschool education. As a family, they meet their needs and wants, such as going to a local shop or staying in a rented house, but prefer to use restaurants and other facilities if their stay is short. Although having children motivates digital nomadism, it has been determined that families prefer to stay in a fixed place as nomads since it is not appropriate for children over a certain age to travel frequently. Originality/value The study provides detailed information regarding a family experience with digital nomadism through a case study.
