This book constitutes the first attempt at a comprehensive description, history, and analysis of Israel’s economy. Plessner examines events of the past two decades and advances the hypothesis that ...problems within the Israeli economy can be explained by the extent of its departure from the institutions and rules that govern predominantly market economies. He argues that Israel is unusual in that it affords an opportunity to analyze a socialized economy embedded in a democratic society. Individual chapters describe Israel’s economic growth and stagnation, the government’s domination of capital and credit markets, and the absence of a truly independent private sector. The concluding chapter evaluates the stabilization program of the 1980s and its aftermath and provides a prognosis for the future. Told within the framework of the story of Zionism and the creation of the Jewish state, this book answers the question of why the Israeli economy finds itself today in the same state in which it has languished since 1973.

As world attention is renewed and refocused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict at the sixtieth anniversary of its seminal year of 1948, Marda Dunsky takes a close look at how more than two dozen ...major American print and broadcast outlets have reported the conflict in recent years. Beginning with the failed Camp David summit of July 2000 through the waning of the second Palestinian uprising in the summer of 2004, she finds that the media omit two key contextual elements: the significant impact that U.S. policy has had and continues to have on the trajectory of the conflict, and the way international law and consensus have addressed the key issues of Israeli settlement and annexation policies and Palestinian refugees. Dunsky explores how reports of the conflict routinely take on the contours of American policy and rarely challenge the premises of this "Washington consensus." She also examines the media's responses to allegations of biased coverage and gauges the effect that mainstream news reporting has on public opinion and U.S. foreign policy.
The goals and challenges that face the people of Israel are vividly illustrated by the country’s many folk stories. Here Haya Bar-Itzhak presents these tales—gathered from the early settlers of the ...kibbutz, from immigrants who arrived in Israel after independence, and from ethnic groups—to create a panoramic view of a fascinatingly complex society.
Creating stories set in the past, even the recent past, is a way for societies to express their problems, adversities, yearnings, and hopes. Bar-Itzhak finds this true among inhabitants of the kibbutz, who find their society at a crossroads as a result of changes in Israeli society at large. She reveals the symbolic dimensions of their stories—some dealing with the death of young soldiers (sacrificed sons) in battle—as pointing to the complexity of a local culture that expresses the ethos of Labor Zionism.
In a section dealing with the folklore of immigrants, Bar-Itzhak focuses on the narratives of Yemenite Jews and Polish Jews. Their stories express their traumatic meeting with Israeli society while providing a means for coming to grips with it. The final section, dealing with ethnic folklore of Moroccan Jews, explores the wonder tale through the perspective of disabled and elderly storytellers, who in the language of their community seek to defend their own values and norms, and examines the saints’ legends and the body language usually employed in the telling of them. Throughout, the author illuminates the unique challenge of experiencing ethnicity as Jews vis-à-vis other Jews.
Israeli Folk Narratives combines new data with insightful analyses. Anyone interested in folk stories and Israeli culture will be enlightened by this sensitive, thought-provoking book.
– 1890.) i Josipa Jurja Strossmayera (1815. – 1905.), koja držimo iznimno vrijednima i bitnima i danas. Takvom smo raščlambom nastojali ispitati kako bi prosudbe tih dvaju velikih mislilaca 19. stoljeća mogle doprinijeti boljoj suradnji između Katoličke Crkve i države u današnjoj Europi. U prvome dijelu, u kojem tematiziramo Newmanovo i Strossmayerovo shvaćanje odnosa Katoličke Crkve i države, na samome početku prikazujemo kontekst u kojem Newman i Strossmayer problematiziraju taj odnos. Taj kontekst karakterizira liberalizam, no s brojnim negativnim konotacijama koje guše njegovo izvorno pozitivno značenje.
This challenging volume offers a timely and extensive overview of the current state of archaeology in Israel. Contributed by leading scholars, the essays focus on current problems and cutting-edge ...issues, ranging from reviews of ongoing excavations to new analytical approaches. Of interest not only to archaeologists, but to social historians as well, the topics include archaeology and social history, archaeology and ethnicity, as well as the overarching issue of how texts and archaeological knowledge are to be combined in the reconstruction of ancient Israel.
Israeli history textbooks in the past contained many biases, distortions, and omissions concerning the depiction of Arabs and the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Today these misrepresentations ...are gradually being corrected. By reviewing curricula and textbooks used in the Israeli educational system since the establishment of Isreal, the author shows how the Israeli educational system, and particularly history textbooks, have presented the image of the Arab and the history of Arab-Israeli relations in the years from 1948 to 2000, and how the trend is to provide a more balanced portrait of the other side. encourages the depiction of a balanced portrait in all textbooks.

Efekt robne petlje stvara poseban ugođaj, posebne oblike povezivanja i razdvajanja, jednakosti i hijerarhije, zajednice i jednosti, slobode i afirmacije.
This book looks at the theoretical issue of how a democracy can defend itself from those wishing to subvert or destroy it, without being required to take measures that would impinge upon the basic ...principles of the democratic idea, such as human rights, freedom of speech and the freedom to form political organizations.
In this book institutional and social frameworks are incorporated into the discussion of the 'paradox' in an attempt to provide an answer to the question: is there a golden path which can reconcile between the democratic polity's need to defend itself and, at the same time, maintain responsibility to protect and safeguard the basic right of its citizens?
Applies clinical pyschology to explain the dynamics of the Middle East peace process. By applying a clinical psychologist’s insight into the Israeli-Arab conflict, Ofer Grosbard lays the foundation ...for a new theory and practice that espouses the use of clinical tools to promote relations between countries, religions, political parties, cultures, and different identities.
