This thesis will contextualise and critically explore how New Drama (Novaya Drama) has been shaped by and adapted to the political, social, and cultural landscape under Putinism (from 2000). It draws ...on close analysis of a variety of plays written by a burgeoning collection of playwrights from across Russia, examining how this provocative and political artistic movement has emerged as one of the most vehement critics of the Putin regime. This study argues that the manifold New Drama repertoire addresses key facets of Putinism by performing suppressed and marginalised voices in public arenas. It contends that New Drama has challenged the established, normative discourses of Putinism presented in the Russian media and by Putin himself, and demonstrates how these productions have situated themselves in the context of the nascent opposition movement in Russia. By doing so, this thesis will offer a fresh perspective on how New Drama's precarious engagement with Putinism provokes political debate in contemporary Russia, and challenges audience members to consider their own role in Putin's autocracy.
In charting the remarkable rise of St John's College, Oxford, from struggling, new-born foundation in 1555 to spectacular host of King Charles and Queen Henrietta in 1636, I demonstrate how the ...theatrical tradition developed by the community of St John's men negotiated and articulated their college's political and economic transformation. My research has uncovered the centrality of drama to college life and the fundamental significance of collegiate identity and tradition to the university men, showing that if we are to build a synoptic view of 'university drama' in early modern England, we must construct it from an understanding of 'college drama'. Deep into the eighteenth century the culture of Latin writing and speaking at Oxford and Cambridge continued to shape all aspects of life in the academies, and yet it is the comparatively few plays written in English which have received the most attention, leading to a distorted view of the university drama. My approach is to restore the neglected Latin sources to their rightful place at the heart of the investigation and, by providing a combination of close textual analysis and translation, to push forward their integration into the mainstream of English Renaissance theatre criticism. Chapter 1 examines the intercollegiate networks which supported St John's College in the early days of its development as a centre for drama, highlighting Christ Church's role as an older, richer sibling to its up-and-coming rival. Chapter 2 analyses the communal function of the college drama, demonstrating that, although each performance was the creative work of individual writers and performers, it relied upon the investment of the college membership as a whole. In Chapter 3 I highlight the influence which changing practices in student recruitment had on the pedagogical and theatrical culture of the community over time, identifying the particular impact of the 'Mulcaster generation' on St John's at the turn of the seventeenth century. Chapter 4 connects drama, politics, and religion to show how ambitious alumni such as Archbishop-Chancellor William Laud used the college stage to test and groom potential protégés; students proving themselves before peers, patrons, and sometimes even royalty, performed a rite of passage which enhanced their career prospects.
My critical writing is closely linked to a pair of oratorios, which are the major ingredients in my final composition portfolio submission, Cantata Eliensis and The Good Samaritan. For my doctoral ...work I have been researching J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion in order to inform my compositional endeavours. I am especially driven to write dramatic music and music that tells a story, and the St Matthew Passion is an extended retelling of an enormously dramatic, if brief, story found in the Gospel of Matthew. It is made more interesting by the fact that it is not an outright drama; that is to say, it is not an opera but combines the characteristics both of a drama and of a sermon. This combining of genres directly informs my two dramatic pieces. The bulk of the research into Bach's music became background for my writing here, which focuses not on the specifics of the composition and performances of the St Matthew Passion, but rather on broader research themes of narrative, musical structure, vocality, authorial voice, drama, and vocation as they appear in Bach's work and the work of his musical heirs, as well as in my own composition.
In this book, experts discuss the use of ‘theatre’ and ‘metatheatre’ to describe ancient Greek dramatic activities. By examining how these two concepts are used in very different ways by scholars of ...various horizons, this collective volume aims both at widening what should be encompassed under the label ‘theatre’ when looking at the ancient Greek world and at better defining what could count as ‘metatheatre’ in ancient Greek dramatic production.
This paper attempts to make a critical analysis of the influence of Korean and Chinese dramas on university students in India, especially in the backdrop of the COVID-19 lockdown. Considering the ...current trend of an increasing surge in drama consumption among GenZ, the research attempts to identify both positive and adverse effects of the soaps on different aspects of their lives. The study is premised on a mixed-method online survey, the data of which is analyzed using the Percentage Analysis method and interpreted based on the Mood-Cue Approach in Cognitive Film Theory proposed by Greg M. Smith. Subsequently, the researcher establishes that the lockdown period has provided great opportunities for the young generation of students to explore a wide variety of Korean and Chinese content. And if the factors leading to the adverse effects on the youth are judiciously controlled, these soaps can contribute a lot to the self-betterment of university students in India.
The Gender Parity and Equality Committee is a team of five delegates from varying constituencies appointed by a legislative body that enacts, ratifies and repeals bills known as the People's ...Assembly. Their mandate is to produce a report on the state of gender politics, to be debated during a sitting of the Assembly to pass the Gender-Parity and Women Empowerment Bill. The sensitive nature of the topics around masculinity, femininity, sexual orientation, sexuality, gender and religion sees tensions brewing as early as the first committee meeting. Can middle ground be found where there are clashes in perceptions, moral compasses and perhaps a general lack of consciousness?
