Collaborative problem solving (CPS) has been the subject of many studies and reflections over the years. Given our realization that there are very few tools for studying CPS in an authentic context, ...we thought it would be relevant to propose one. This article presents the steps that led to the design of a CPS observation grid. Based on Strayer and Gauthier's (1982) model, we present the process structured in three parts: the descriptive phase, the exploratory phase, and the systematic evaluation. This last phase, conducted with the help of a videography device, was carried out with 109 primary school students in three Quebec schools. Composed of three dimensions through which 15 indicators are distributed, this grid offers an interesting perspective on the qualitative and interpretative observation of the mobilization of CPS skills. This tool makes it possible to calculate frequencies, but also to interpret the behaviours associated with each of the indicators in order to formulate hypotheses or to allow school personnel to orient their interventions or teaching practices according to the needs of the students.
As the COVID-19 pandemic upended the 2019–2020 school year, education systems scrambled to meet the needs of students and families with little available data on how school closures may impact ...learning. In this study, we produced a series of projections of COVID-19-related learning loss based on (a) estimates from absenteeism literature and (b) analyses of summer learning patterns of 5 million students. Under our projections, returning students are expected to start fall 2020 with approximately 63 to 68% of the learning gains in reading and 37 to 50% of the learning gains in mathematics relative to a typical school year. However, we project that losing ground during the school closures was not universal, with the top third of students potentially making gains in reading.
The purpose of this study was to develop learning freestyle swimming for elementary school students, as well as to find out the effectiveness of the model that had been developed. The method in this ...study was to develop a freestyle swimming learning model for elementary school students using the Research & Development model approach from Brog and Gall. The aim of this research is to develop a swimming learning model for students at State Elementary School 1 Lokatabat Utara, State Elementary School Guntung Manggis, State Elementary School Landasan Ulin Utara. The small group trial consisted of 20 people while the large group trial consisted of 110 people. Data collection in this study was to review various literature or literature studies related to the model concepts that would be developed according to the product to be made and referred to needs analysis, expert review and field trials. To calculate the effectiveness test using (t-test) with an analysis of the difference between the two means for dependent samples. The results of the study of the freestyle swimming learning model for elementary school students are in accordance with the characteristics of the students and are effective for improving freestyle swimming learning.
Background Soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) continue to be a significant health problem in Sub-Saharan Africa especially among school children. In Kenya, treatment of over five million children ...has been conducted annually in 28 endemic counties since the year 2012. However, the latest monitoring and evaluation (M&E) results indicated a slow decline of prevalence and intensity of STH in some counties after the seven rounds of annual mass drug administration (MDA). The current study sought to determine the factors associated with the slow decline in prevalence and intensity of STH among school children participating in the school deworming programme. Methodology Mixed methods cross-sectional study was conducted in three endemic counties of Kenya. For quantitative technique, simple random sampling was used to select 1,874 school children from six purposively selected primary schools. The school children were interviewed, and a single stool collected and analysed using Kato-Katz technique. While for qualitative methods, 15 focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted with purposively selected parents/guardians of school children. Data was collected through voice records using FGD and analyzed using NVIVO. Findings Prevalence of any STH infection was 30.8% (95%CI: 28.7-32.9), with the highest prevalence observed in Vihiga County (40.7%; 95%CI: 37.4-44.4). Multivariable analysis revealed that geographical location (OR = 3.78, (95%CI: 1.81-7.88) p<0.001), and not washing hands after defecation (OR = 1.91, (95%CI: 1.13-3.20) p = 0.015) were significantly associated with any STH infection. For qualitative analysis, majority of the parents/guardians of SAC felt that poor water sanitation and hygiene practices (WASH) both in school and household level could be a cause of continued STH infection. Also failing to include the rest of the community members in the MDAs were mentioned as possible contributors to observed slow decline of STH. Conclusions There was moderate STH prevalence and mean intensity despite the seven rounds of repeated annual MDA. The study recommends a revamped awareness creation on WASH and community wide treatment.
Abstract
The essence of the current science curriculum (aka curriculum 2013) nationally applied in all elementary schools is scientific approach to improve the students’ skills and knowledge. Based ...on our need analysis we found that Mechanical experiment series are highly needed. The main goal of this study is to produce media kit for science experiment activities for elementary school students. The media kit consists of experimental tools kit and their experimental guide modules. We applied the 4-D model to achieve the goal. This study is on-going process; this article reports the progress status of the study.
This article continues the study of conversation topics as a means of developing learners speech skills, that begun in the previous work "Relevant topics motivating learners of English to produce ...meaningful utterances". By determining the ratio of preferences with respect to topics for oral utterances among school teachers and students, we have identified the range of problems that cause the greatest interest among modern schoolchildren. The results of this research can be taken into account in the development of textbooks and at refresh courses for foreign language teachers.
