Rock art engravings discovered in the central (Jebel Ousselat) and centro-southern Tunisia (Gafsa region), show ovaloids of various types and morphologies associated with wild and domestic animals mainly ornate rams. We examine here these cases of associations and propose some interpretations about.
This article is part of a series of research results that we have developed in the context of the preparation of a PhD thesis on human occupation in the upper valley of the Oued Sayyad during the Neolithic and Protohistory. These results consist in the discovery of new rock engraving sites in the region of Tainzert, in the commune of Taghjijt, in the region of Guelmim (Morocco). These sites contain a large number of engravings of various subjects, prehistoric burial mounds, shelters and archaeological finds, notably of lithic industry. This set of discoveries can add new archaeological data on the history of the region and the history of Morocco in general.

This is a paper about mark making and human becoming. I will be asking what do marks do? How do they signify? What role do marks play in human becoming and the evolution of human intelligence? These ...questions cannot be pursued effectively from the perspective of any single discipline or ontology. Nonetheless, they are questions that archaeology has a great deal to contribute. They are also important questions, if not the least because evidence of early mark making constitutes the favoured archaeological mark of the ‘cognitive’ (in the ‘modern’ representational sense of the word). In this paper I want to argue that the archaeological predilection to see mark making as a potential index of symbolic representation often blind us to other, more basic dimensions of the cognitive life and agency of those marks as material signs. Drawing on enactive cognitive science and Material Engagement Theory I will show that early markings, such as the famous engravings from Blombos cave, are above all the products of kinesthetic dynamics of a non-representational sort that allow humans to engage and discover the semiotic affordances of mark making opening up new possibilities of enactive material signification. I will also indicate some common pitfalls in the way archaeology thinks about the ‘cognitive’ that needs overcome.
In the chapter xvi of the First Part of Don Quixote, I, chap. 16, innkeeper Palomeque’s daughter, a young maiden, says that she uses to dream that she
falls from a tower below, without reaching the ...ground, waking up in pain as if she
had really fallen. The dream of falling into the void is usually interpreted as a dream of insecurity or anxiety. The engraving with which this passage is reflected in the XIX
century gives rise to relate not only the text, but also the images of that dream with
other accidental, provoked or suicidal falls in classical literature. And to propose for
the dreaming girl an evolution that goes through her identification with the heroines
of chivalric books
Uncovering a wealth of neglected archival information, this book examines both visual and textual material from the mid-nineteenth century Franklin Search Expeditions to the Arctic, painstakingly ...tracing their influence on popular imagination. Its surprising findings present a compelling challenge to the still-dominant 'man-versus-nature' trope.
The Palaeolithic rock engravings that are located along the Nalón river basin in Northern Spain (central area of Asturias) have been studied from various perspectives (morphology, depth, style, ...manual range), but no use-wear studies on the stone tools used to produce such engravings have ever been undertaken. This paper aims to explore a new approach to this type of incisions based on use-wear analysis of experimental lithic tools used to engrave limestone blocks and slabs. Our results show that the use-wear traces generated by engraving limestone are well-developed and can be defined with specific criteria. The principal objective of this study was to provide the first experimental reference collection of use-wear resulting from engraving limestone using flint and quartzite experimental tools to compare with the traces that appear on tools in the archaeological record in contexts with parietal and portable art and, more specifically, to add a new approach to the multidisciplinary study of the La Viña rock shelter.
•Experimental collection of use-wear resulting from engraving limestone.•Description of macro and micro traces and residues involving in the stone working.•Combination of SEM and OM to analyse use-wear traces in quartzite and flint tools.
There are hundreds of impressions of engravings relating to the person, life and voyages of Captain Cook in collections around the world. Many, however, are disassociated from the original contexts ...of their publication and are thus of limited historical use. Beginning with a single, radically trimmed impression in the Ashmolean Museum, a detailed account is provided of one particular engraving. It is shown that it was originally published as a frontispiece to a volume of the Universal Magazine, whose previously overlooked role in the dissemination of knowledge about Cook's voyages is then demonstrated. Accounts are provided of the specific context in which the engraving was published and the specific meaning it was intended to convey.
This paper briefly presents and critically discusses decorated objects (stone, bone and antler), personal ornaments and other perforated objects from the Upper and Late Palaeolithic in the ...Netherlands. The finds can be attributed to the Hamburgian, the Federmessergruppen and the Ahrensburgian. To date no engravings and ornaments are known with certainty from the Late Magdalenian or the Creswellian. Finds from the Federmessergruppen confirm the transition from a more naturalistic way of representation to more stylized, geometric Mesolithic art. Besides directly dated objects and objects from secure contexts a number of controversial pieces is discussed as well.
