Conceptions of critical thinking (CT) are influenced by cultural and sociopolitical factors that give rise to a variety of views of CT across contexts. Rethinking conceptions of CT according to context is thus important in order to design teaching models that respond to sociocultural particularities and needs as well as to global demands. Existing conceptualizations of CT include cognitive, metacognitive, emotional, attitudinal, ethical, and sociopolitical dimensions that have shaped various approaches adopted in the curriculum. The skills–dispositions perspective to CT is dominant across contexts, but emerging perspectives and approaches include less recognized dimensions, such as civic, ethical, and cultural ones. Neglecting these leads to negative consequences in the fight for social justice since a comprehensive view of CT entails ethical reasoning, social awareness, and a deep concern for the public good leading to action. A comprehensive, culturally sensitive model of CT should include, at least, intellectual skills, dispositions, and ethical and civic dimensions.
Desde hace varias décadas, diferentes campos disciplinares abordan el estudio de la argumentación, desde diversos enfoques, los cuales -más allá de sus divergencias-, contribuyen a configurar un mapa ...de los complejos aspectos implicados en esta temática, que exige un tratamiento interdisciplinario. El mayor problema radica en la escasa relación entre estos estudios teóricos y el ámbito educativo, o más bien en la “aplicación” de algunos enfoques (retóricos y/o lógicos), en detrimento de otros (dialógicos y dialécticos), que habilitan el planteamiento de su dimensión epistémica y colaborativa. Tanto estos enfoques, como otros que enfatizan la relevancia de las dimensiones actitudinal, emocional, ética y situada, son indispensables para entender la complejidad de la argumentación y de su posible enseñanza y aprendizaje. En este artículo, consideramos algunos de estos aportes teóricos y empíricos que contribuyen a analizar las condiciones de posibilidad de una enseñanza sistemática de la argumentación a lo largo de la escolaridad.
Ethical issues of nations are not just a simple and desirable topic in moral and political philosophy. On the one hand, we would like to address general and important topics that are less ...controversial, and therefore the topic of the nation does not suit us very well. On the other hand, since the end of the First World War, we have been divided into nation states, especially in the European context, as the conquest of a national self-determined movement. In the political space of a unifying Europe, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, there was again talk of the nation as a restrictive, even unsatisfactory concept of future development. However, the ensuing wave of nationalism, even in the great states of the world, shows a phenomenon that is not so easy to circumvent. It was in the 1990s that several personalities tried to take a stand on the importance of nations for the future of human development. Pope John Paul II of Poland was one of them.
The probing thesis in this study is anchored on the declaration that the best way to look at business ethics is by looking at how companies incorporated ethics into their operations. Since 1929 when ...a veteran journalist, Isaac Thomas, launched the first evening newspaper in Lagos, the Nigerian Evening News, an initiative which became the first in Nigeria, efforts by other investors or media proprietors to establish evening newspapers in the state, in spite of its sophistication and concentration of almost two-thirds of Nigerian media proved abortive. As at the time of putting together findings from this study, Lagos has become a highly dreaded business environment for publication of evening newspapers. The study found out that beyond any other measures or suggestions, a thorough injection and application of business ethics is the major panacea to successfully manage any media venture in the state. Through an in-depth interview approach with promoters and top editors-cum-management staff of the failed evening newspapers backed up with historical method of analysis, the study found out that business ethics is the panacea to rescue any distressed newspaper as well as the ‘tonic’ to strengthen any medium that wishes to remain healthily afloat. The study is routed through one of the traditional ethical theories, utilitarianism propounded by Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. The study therefore recommended the need for media proprietors not to undermine role of ethics in the establishment, growth and sustainability of the press.
On 14 December 2021, the extraordinary event called “touching the Sun” has been heralded as a “monumental moment for solar science”, in which the Parker Solar Probe opened up a new frontier of ...research for Space exploration, proposing the challenge of reaching, studying, and even “touching” our Sun at close range. The consequences of this event are scientific but also metaphysical and transcendental, offering the opportunity to reflect on the complex reality and meaning of the “boundaries” as opportunities for relationships and then for ethics. In this paper, I would like to propose an attempt to develop a possible discussion for an extension of Space Sustainability as an ethical guide for humanity which, as it goes out into outer Space, is helped to rediscover new, expanded dimensions of perception along the path of mystery and humility, in order to return back to Earth enriched for new relationships in pursuit of the common good.
The field of personal health monitoring (PHM) develops rapidly in different contexts, including the armed forces. Understanding the ethical dimension of this type of monitoring is key to a morally ...responsible development, implementation and usage of PHM within the armed forces. Research on the ethics of PHM has primarily been carried out in civilian settings, while the ethical dimension of PHM in the armed forces remains understudied. Yet, PHM of military personnel by design takes place in a different setting than PHM of civilians, because of their tasks and the context in which they operate. This case study therefore focusses on obtaining insights into the experiences and related values of different stakeholders regarding an existing form of PHM, the Covid-19 Radar app, in the Netherlands Armed Forces.
We carried out an exploratory qualitative study, using semi-structured interviews with twelve stakeholders in the Netherlands Armed Forces. We focussed on participation in the use of PHM, reflections on the practical use and use of data, moral dilemmas and the need for ethics support, all in regard to PHM. The data was analysed using an inductive thematic approach.
Three interlinking categories reflecting ethical dimensions of PHM emerged: (1) values, (2) moral dilemmas, and (3) external norms. The main values identified were: security (in relation to data), trust and hierarchy. Multiple related values were found. Some, but no broadly shared, moral dilemmas were identified and no strong need for ethics support was expressed.
This study shed light on key values, provide insights in the experienced and presumed moral dilemmas and bring to mind ethics support considerations when looking at PHM in the armed forces. Some values bring a certain vulnerability to military users when personal and organisational interests are not aligned. Furthermore, some identified values may hinder a careful consideration of PHM because they potentially conceal parts of ethical dimensions of PHM. Ethics support can assist in uncovering and addressing these concealed parts. The findings highlight a moral responsibility for the armed forces to devote attention to the ethical dimensions of PHM.
