The past two decades of contemporary British drama have been marked by an upsurge of interest in the exploration of the ethics, aesthetics and politics of authorship along with the relational ...dynamics among the author, the work and audience/reader. One of the latest and paradigmatic examples of this trend is Ella Hickson's The Writer (2018), a play informed by a queer feminist sensibility and distinguished by its aesthetics, its form, and its political critique of theatre as an institute underpinned by phallogocentric and heteronormative discourses. Accordingly, the essay will demonstrate how the queering of gender and genre are indelibly intertwined in the play. The Writer queers conventional theatrical form not only by deconstructing its "economy" and "forms" of hegemonic subjectivity, expression, and desire; but also by incorporating a surreal scene and various metatheatrical moments - to develop a more evental (or feminine) form characterised by formal transgression, abstraction, and excess. The Writer queers gender by pondering the dynamics of an evental love-sex relationship between the female writer (the protagonist) and her female lover along with a surreal experience of intimacy between the writer and mythical Semele. To effectively ponder the thematic and formal preoccupations of The Writer, this essay develops a nuanced conceptual framework whose premises include Irigaray's "the female imaginary", Deleuze's "becoming-other", Cixous's "écriture feminine", Lyotard's "the figural" and Derrida's "chora".
PurposeHeritage reuse, in which the aesthetics of heritage play a leading role, often leads to extreme commodification of heritage, place branding, gentrification and the exclusion of many narratives ...and voices. In order to understand how such processes of erosion and estrangement between heritage and local communities can be countered, while still redeveloping heritage buildings for contemporary urban needs, this paper explores with what kind of practices and heritage approaches these tensions can be mitigated, learning from recent experiences in Praga district.Design/methodology/approachBased on qualitative semi-structured interviews in a case study of a living lab of ongoing heritage reuse practice in Praga district in the city of Warsaw, Poland, the authors identify practices and approaches that can help to overcome tensions between the ethics and aesthetics of heritage reuse.FindingsIn rapidly changing district like Praga, local communities and others are struggling to compete process of change that impact their heritage, and the engagement with it. Although the local community is quite active in addressing various urban challenges and preserving the character of Praga including heritage elements, the conditions under which these community-led heritage reuse practices operate are quite impactful, as it appears that cooperation with local institutions is vital in order to embed community-led heritage reuse practices to overcome the tensions between ethics and aesthetics of heritage reuse.Originality/valueThis paper presents an in-depth analysis of a living lab of community-led heritage reuse. As such, the paper highlights various practices of community organizations and citizen initiatives that address heritage reuse, as well as the conditions under which these initiatives operate.
One expression of lifestyle is clothing. Clothing becomes a choice within a concept related to its usefulness as the body cover and related to an expression of dialogue between ethical and ...aesthetical considerations. Applying qualitative research with a philosophical approach, this study reveals three groups of women with their basic orientation in dressing. The first group argues that the model’s suitability with users’ needs or aesthetics is the primary consideration in clothing. The second group considers the ethics value as their first consideration in choosing a dress, while the third group brings together ethical and esthetical aspects as their consideration in dressing. Our finding also suggests that each group has a specific characteristic in their dressing appearance.
In this study, we explored some theoretical assumptions of literary analysis within the context of everyday situations of sense production. This operation was carried out by analyzing longitudinal ...videotaped sessions of the interactions between a mother and an infant. Concepts related to language, ethics and aesthetics formed the basis for the theoretical assumptions that guided our analysis. A microanalysis of empirical data illustrates the functioning of these assumptions for the production of sense. In the results, we discussed the implications of the simultaneity of past experiences and the anticipation of future possibilities for the organization of the actions in the immediate present. We concluded that the production of sense is a way to solve emerging tensions related to the simultaneity of past and future, originality, individuality, and dynamic stability when responsive situations arise. Therefore, the production of sense was considered an ethical and aesthetic human action, and we were able to verify how appropriate these assumptions were to analyze language practices outside literature.
By this brief note, the author commemorates prof. Morris L. Ghezzi, referring especially to his very last writings, contained in a book appeared a few months after his untimely death in 2017 (Ciò che ...resta. La rivoluzione del diritto come estetica). In his last years, bringing ethics and aesthetics to converge into the same conceptual sphere of 'like' and 'dislike', Ghezzi insisted on the "aesthetic" nature of law, in a relativistic and nihilistic stance that from the realm of law came to extend into that of life and its doubtful significance.
