The Linxia Basin has produced some of the most complete and fossiliferous fossil assemblages among the known late Cenozoic basins including diverse carnivoran elements. In this work, we summarize the ...chronological framework for its fossil Carnivora based on current knowledge. A total of 80 species of Carnivora, belonging to 55 genera and 10 families, are currently recorded in 10 assemblages. Three faunas with Carnivora of Middle Miocene age, include amphicyonids, hemicyonids, and percrocutids. Five assemblages dating to the late Miocene and the earliest Pliocene hipparion faunas, are represented by very abundant ictitherine hyaenids, the giant hyaena Dinocrocuta, the large machairodont Amphimachairodus and diverse metailurine felids, and various mustelids. The Late Pliocene records scant material, but the Early Pleistocene Equus fauna is well represented by canids, hyaenids, a lynx, and Megantereon. A major Carnivoran guild turnover occurs at the boundary of the Middle and Late Miocene. The Linxia Basin experienced earlier aridification in the Late Miocene than did Europe, likely correlated with the rise of Tibet. The medial body size of Carnivora remains largely unchanged from the Middle Miocene to the Early Pleistocene. Crown-group members (at the family level) increased dramatically in proportion during the Late Miocene, and remained largely unchanged since the latest Miocene, suggesting that the Late Miocene is the major period of emplacement of current Carnivora phylogenetic structure.

La actual crisis de biodiversidad generada por la extinción de especies requiere la identificación de áreas prioritarias para dirigir recursos económicos, así como la planificación e implementación ...de estrategias efectivas de conservación. En este contexto, el conocimiento de los patrones filogeográficos y genético-poblacionales de las especies de la fauna autóctona resulta fundamental para comprender los patrones de distribución de la variabilidad genética, así como los procesos evolutivos que los determinan. Esta información resulta relevante para la definición correcta de unidades biológicas para el establecimiento de prioridades de manejo y conservación. Asimismo, los estudios de ADN ambiental representan un método de monitoreo indirecto de fauna que resulta eficaz para aportar al diseño de planes para su manejo y conservación. La fauna nativa de la región Chaco-Pampeana incluye una gran diversidad y abundancia de especies. En la actualidad, muchas de ellas están amenazadas directa o indirectamente debido, principalmente, a la pérdida de hábitat, la transformación de ecosistemas naturales en tierras de uso agropecuario, la expansión de los asentamientos humanos, la caza y la introducción de especies exóticas, no existiendo acciones coordinadas para su conservación en el país. En este Simposio se analizan los patrones genético-poblacionales y filogeográficos de especies relevantes de la fauna chaco-pampeana, su aplicación a la identificación en la conservación de la diversidad biológica y en planes de reintroducción y monitoreo.

La autoridad ambiental4, quien funge por ley humana - no eriza-, como su juez, no está normativamente habilitada para tener en cuenta que su captura fue ilegal, que su extradición viola cualquier ...principio elemental del derecho internacional, que fue sometido a tratos crueles y degradantes durante su estadía en la cárcel (cautiverio), que está proscrita la pena de muerte según la Constitución Política de Colombia5 o que aceptaría de buen gusto volver a su África natal, sin poner en riesgo ni a la fauna ni a los ecosistemas de esta tierra colombiana que, por demás, tampoco ha tenido oportunidad de conocer en libertad. Una configuración jurídico-política dura con ciertas especies animales cuya principal desgracia reside en coexistir con una especie, como la humana, que en verdad pone en riesgo a todas las especies de fauna. Estos países han reportado avances importantes en la lucha contra el tráfico de fauna y la simplificación de criterios de control sin aumento de carga burocrática. Articulado con la definición de fauna introducida ya presentada, se llegaría a la conclusión de que la mayoría las palomas son una especie otrora domesticada18, que fue introducida en territorio colombiano hace centenares, pero que ha regresado a estado salvaje y por ende volvió a ser, normativamente hablando, silvestre. ¿Han de ser protegidas las palomas por la autoridad ambiental al ser fauna silvestre? O ¿ha de ser controlada por la autoridad ambiental al ser especie introducida? O ¿ha de ser atendida y controlada, por haber sido domesticada, por los entes territoriales? O peor aún, ¿ha de ser intervenida por la autoridad de salud a la manera de situación de plaga cuando su aumento poblacional genere conflicto con la ciudadanía o el ecosistema?
Fossil bovids are key components of the Neogene mammal faunas in Eurasia, showing high diversity and rapid rates of evolution, with important implications for biostratigraphy and understanding past ...climate change. The Linxia Basin (Gansu Province, China) contains rich Miocene to Early Pleistocene bovid assemblages that provide an opportunity to study the evolution of this group. This paper reviews the fossil record of bovids in the Linxia Basin, which comprises more than 20 genera within seven tribes, spanning nine stratigraphic horizons and distributed across 43 fossil localities. Findings show that the diversity of fossil bovids in the Linxia Basin increased dramatically from the Early to Late Miocene but fell suddenly at the end of the Late Miocene before reaching a second peak in the Early Pleistocene. The Late Miocene mammal assemblages from the Linxia Basin may indicate somewhat younger age than previously thought based on fossil bovid comparisons. With diverse species and rich material, the bovids of the Linxia Basin present an excellent opportunity for further studies on morphology and adaptations within the group.

Human–wildlife conflicts (HWC) are complex conservation challenges that impair both wildlife populations and human livelihood. Research on HWC, however, has traditionally approached ecological and ...human components separately, hampering a broader understanding of connections between ecological drivers and human dimensions of conflicts. We developed a model that integrates ecological and human components of HWC to investigate how the amount of remaining native forest (forest cover, a key ecological variable known to influence species occurrence and abundance) affects human experiences with wildlife (contact with species and attacks on livestock) and how such experiences influence tolerance via beliefs, emotions, and attitudes. We tested the model with piecewise structural equation modeling and data on human interactions with 3 mammals with different rarity and body size: opossum (Didelphis aurita), crab‐eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), and puma (Puma concolor). Data were obtained by interviewing 114 landowners across 13 Atlantic Forest landscapes (10–50% forest cover). Forest cover was associated with high chance of attacks on livestock, and thus with low tolerance, only in the case of the puma. Effects of distinct experiences with wildlife on beliefs and emotions varied across species. Beliefs and emotions toward wildlife influenced tolerance toward all species, but negative emotions affected tolerance toward only with the puma. Conflicts with large carnivores, such as pumas, can then be understood as disservices provided by forests, indicating the relevance of framing HWC more broadly to consider trade‐offs with ecosystems services. For some species, positive experiences with wildlife may counteract the negative effects of attacks on livestock in shaping tolerance. Models such as ours—that link ecological and human dimensions—can help identify more effective leverage points to improve HWC mitigation.
Vinculación de componentes humanos y ecológicos para entender los conflictos humano‐fauna a nivel paisaje y especies

Los conflictos humano‐fauna (CHF) son retos complejos para la conservación pues perjudican tanto a las poblaciones de fauna como al sustento humano. Sin embargo, las investigaciones sobre los CHF por tradición han manejado a los componentes humanos y ecológicos de manera separada, dificultando un entendimiento más amplio de las conexiones entre los conductores ecológicos y las dimensiones humanas de estos conflictos. Desarrollamos un modelo que integra a los componentes ecológicos y humanos de los CHF para investigar cómo la cantidad de bosque nativo remanente (la cobertura de bosque, una variable ecológica importante que se sabe influye sobre la presencia y abundancia de las especies) afecta a las experiencias que las personas tienen con la fauna (contacto con especies y ataques al ganado) y cómo dichas experiencias influyen en la tolerancia por medio de creencias, emociones y actitudes. Probamos el modelo con un modelado de ecuación estructural por partes y datos sobre las interacciones humanas con tres mamíferos de diferente tamaño y rareza: la zarigüeya (Didelphis aurita), el zorro cangrejero (Cerdocyon thous) y el puma (Puma concolor). Los datos se obtuvieron por medio de entrevistas realizadas a 114 terratenientes distribuidos en 13 paisajes de bosque atlántico (10‐50% de cobertura de bosque). La cobertura de bosque estuvo asociada con una alta probabilidad de ataques al ganado, y por lo tanto con una baja tolerancia, sólo para el caso del puma. Los efectos de las distintas experiencias con la fauna sobre las creencias y las emociones variaron con cada especie. Las creencias y las emociones hacia la fauna influyeron en la tolerancia hacia todas las especies, aunque las emociones negativas afectaron la tolerancia solamente hacia el puma. Los conflictos con los grandes carnívoros, como el puma, pueden entenderse como servicios negativos proporcionados por los bosques, lo que indica la relevancia de enmarcar a los CHF de manera más amplia para considerar las compensaciones con los servicios ambientales. Para algunas especies, las experiencias positivas con la fauna pueden contrarrestar los efectos negativos de los ataques al ganado en cuanto a la formación de la tolerancia. Los modelos como el nuestro – que conectan las dimensiones ecológicas y humanas – pueden ayudar a identificar puntos de ventaja más efectivos para mejorar la mitigación de los CHF.

Anthropocene defaunation, the global extinction of faunal species and populations and the decline in abundance of individuals within populations, has been predominantly documented in terrestrial ...ecosystems, but indicators suggest defaunation has been more severe in freshwater ecosystems. Marine defaunation is in a more incipient stage, yet pronounced effects are already apparent and its rapid acceleration seems likely. Defaunation now impacts the planet's wildlife with profound cascading consequences, ranging from local to global coextinctions of interacting species to the loss of ecological services critical for humanity. Slowing defaunation will require aggressively reducing animal overexploitation and habitat destruction; mitigating climate disruption; and stabilizing the impacts of human population growth and uneven resource consumption. Given its omnipresence, defaunation should receive status of major global environmental change and should be addressed with the same urgency as deforestation, pollution, and climatic change. Global action is needed to prevent defaunation's current trajectory from catalyzing the planet's sixth major extinction.

Wildlife conservation and management (WCM) practices have been historically drawn from a wide variety of academic fields, yet practitioners have been slow to engage with emerging conversations about ...animals as complex beings, whose individuality and sociality influence their relationships with humans. We propose an explicit acknowledgement of wild, nonhuman animals as active participants in WCM. We examined 190 studies of WCM interventions and outcomes to highlight 3 common assumptions that underpin many present approaches to WCM: animal behaviors are rigid and homogeneous; wildlife exhibit idealized wild behavior and prefer pristine habitats; and human–wildlife relationships are of marginal or secondary importance relative to nonhuman interactions. We found that these management interventions insufficiently considered animal learning, decision‐making, individuality, sociality, and relationships with humans and led to unanticipated detrimental outcomes. To address these shortcomings, we synthesized theoretical advances in animal behavioral sciences, animal geographies, and animal legal theory that may help conservation professionals reconceptualize animals and their relationships with humans. Based on advances in these fields, we constructed the concept of animal agency, which we define as the ability of animals to actively influence conservation and management outcomes through their adaptive, context‐specific, and complex behaviors that are predicated on their sentience, individuality, lived experiences, cognition, sociality, and cultures in ways that shape and reshape shared human–wildlife cultures, spaces, and histories. Conservation practices, such as compassionate conservation, convivial conservation, and ecological justice, incorporate facets of animal agency. Animal agency can be incorporated in conservation problem‐solving by assessing the ways in which agency contributes to species’ survival and by encouraging more adaptive and collaborative decision‐making among human and nonhuman stakeholders.

Aunque las prácticas de gestión y conservación de fauna (GCF) han partido históricamente de una gama amplia de áreas académicas, los practicantes se han visto lentos para participar en las conversaciones emergentes sobre los animales como seres complejos, cuya individualidad y sociabilidad influyen sobre sus relaciones con los humanos. Proponemos un reconocimiento explícito de los animales no humanos silvestres como participantes activos en la GCF. Para esto, examinamos 190 estudios sobre las intervenciones y los resultados de GCF para resaltar tres supuestos comunes que respaldan a muchas estrategias actuales de GCF: el comportamiento animal es rígido y homogéneo, la fauna exhibe un comportamiento silvestre idealizado y prefiere hábitats prístinos, y las relaciones humano‐fauna son de importancia marginal o secundaria en relación con las interacciones no humanas. Descubrimos que estas intervenciones de gestión no consideran lo suficientemente el aprendizaje, toma de decisiones, individualidad, sociabilidad y relaciones con los humanos de los animales, por lo que llevan a resultados imprevistos y perjudiciales. Para lidiar con estas limitaciones, sintetizamos los avances teóricos que han tenido las ciencias dedicadas al comportamiento animal, la geografía animal y la teoría legal animal que pueden ayudar a los profesionales de la conservación a reformular el concepto de animal y sus relaciones con los humanos. Con base en los avances en estas áreas construimos el concepto de agencia animal, el cual definimos como la habilidad que tienen los animales para influir activamente sobre la conservación y los resultados de manejo por medio de su comportamiento adaptativo, complejo y específico al contexto, los cuales están basados en su sensibilidad, individualidad, experiencias vividas, conocimiento, sociabilidad y culturas, de manera que construyen y reconstruyen las culturas, espacios e historias humano‐fauna. Las prácticas de conservación, como la conservación compasiva, la conservación acogedora y la justicia ecológica, incorporan facetas de la agencia animal. La agencia animal puede incorporarse en la solución de los problemas de conservación al evaluar las formas en las que la agencia contribuye a la supervivencia de la especie y al alentar una toma de decisiones más adaptativa y colaborativa entre los actores humanos y los no humanos.
野生动物保护和管理中的动物能动性

Qaidam Basin is the largest terrestrial basin of the Tibetan Plateau and has the most continuous sedimentary record in the Cenozoic. Although constituting the first known fossil vertebrates of the ...Tibetan Plateau and discovered in early scientific expeditions in the 1930s, mammalian fossils from Qaidam Basin have not played a significant role in studying the basin stratigraphy. Our explorations in the Qaidam Basin during the past 8 years have resulted in the first well documented collection of fossil vertebrates from there. In addition to being the best organisms for terrestrial biostratigraphy in the Cenozoic, the new fossil vertebrates offer a unique window into the ancient biotas that chronicle the late Cenozoic uplift of the plateau and associated environmental changes.
Here we establish for the first time a faunal sequence of early Oligocene to early Pliocene age. Four mammalian faunas are recognized: Olongbuluk Mammal Fauna (middle Miocene), Tuosu Mammal Fauna (early late Miocene), Shengou Mammal Fauna (early late Miocene), and Huaitoutala Mammal Fauna (early Pliocene). All four mammal faunas can be directly or indirectly tied to a paleomagnetic section in the Olongbuluk–Huaitoutala area, permitting robust calibration of the chronology of these faunas. At least four fish faunas are also found: Lulehe Fish Fauna (late early to early late Oligocene), Shengou Fish Fauna (early late Miocene), Eboliang Fish Fauna (late late Miocene to early Pliocene), and Yahu Fish Fauna (early Pliocene). The fish faunas represent the only records of their respective times in the Tibetan Plateau and thus by themselves cannot be used for age determination. However, these fish faunas are either integrated into paleomagnetic sections or directly tied to mammal faunas of known ages, permitting independent assessment of their chronology.
Zoogeographically, Qaidam mammal faunas show increasing endemism through time, presumably related to topographic barriers formed by the growth and uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and to climatic changes triggered by the same tectonic process. Fishes that were trapped in internally drained basins developed pachyostotic morphologies caused by hypersaline environments, which are associated with the increasing aridity of the Tibetan Plateau since early Pliocene.
Although coexistence with wildlife is a key goal of conservation, little is known about it or how to study it. By coexistence we mean a sustainable though dynamic state in which humans and wildlife ...coadapt to sharing landscapes, where human interactions with wildlife are effectively governed to ensure wildlife populations persist in socially legitimate ways that ensure tolerable risk levels. Problems that arise from current conflict‐oriented framing of human–wildlife interactions include reinforcing a human–nature dichotomy as fundamentally oppositional, suggesting coexistence requires the absence of conflict, and skewing research and management toward direct negative impacts over indirect impacts and positive aspects of living with wildlife. Human behavior toward wildlife is framed as rational calculus of costs and benefits, sidelining emotional and cultural dimensions of these interactions. Coexistence is less studied due to unfamiliarity with relevant methodologies, including qualitative methods, self‐reflexivity and ethical rigor, and constraints on funding and time. These challenges are illustrated with examples from fieldwork in India and Africa. We recommend a basic approach to case studies aimed at expanding the scope of inquiries into human–wildlife relations beyond studies of rational behavior and quantification of costs and benefits of wildlife to humans.
Replanteamiento del Estudio de la Coexistencia Humano‐Fauna

A pesar de que la coexistencia con la fauna es una meta de suma importancia para la conservación, todavía se conoce muy poco sobre ella y cómo estudiarla. Cuando hablamos de coexistencia nos referimos a un estado sustentable, pero a la vez dinámico en el cual los humanos y la fauna están coadaptados a compartir paisajes en los que las interacciones entre humanos y animales están regidas de manera efectiva para asegurar que las poblaciones de fauna persistan de maneras socialmente legítimas que aseguren niveles tolerables de riesgo. Los problemas que surgen de las actuales estructuraciones orientadas hacia la resolución de conflictos en las interacciones humano‐fauna incluyen el reforzamiento de una dicotomía humano‐naturaleza como fundamentalmente opositora, lo que sugiere que la coexistencia requiere de una ausencia del conflicto y la desviación de la investigación y el manejo hacia los impactos negativos directos por encima de los impactos indirectos y los aspectos positivos de la convivencia con la fauna. El comportamiento humano hacia la fauna está conceptualizado como un cálculo racional de costos y beneficios, haciendo a un lado las dimensiones emocionales y culturales de estas interacciones. La coexistencia está poco estudiada debido a la poca familiarización con las metodologías relevantes, incluyendo los métodos cualitativos, el rigor ético y autorreflexivo y las restricciones al financiamiento y al tiempo. Estos retos se encuentran ilustrados mediante ejemplos tomados del trabajo de campo en la India y en África. Recomendamos un enfoque básico para los estudios de caso centrado en la expansión del espectro de las indagaciones en las relaciones humano‐fauna más allá de los estudios del comportamiento racional y la cuantificación de los costos y beneficios de la fauna para los humanos.
Sustaining wildlife populations, which provide both ecosystem services and disservices, represents a worldwide conservation challenge. The ecosystem services and Ostrom's social–ecological systems ...frameworks have been adopted across natural and social sciences to characterize benefits from nature. Despite their generalizability, individually they do not include explicit tools for addressing the sustainable management of many wildlife populations. For instance, Ostrom's framework does not specifically address competing perspectives on wildlife, whereas the ecosystem services framework provides a limited representation of the social and governance context wherein such competing perspectives are embedded. We developed a unified social–ecological framework of ecosystem disservices and services (SEEDS) that advances both frameworks by explicitly acknowledging the importance of competing wildlife perspectives embedded in the social and governance contexts. The SEEDS framework emulates the hierarchical structure of Ostrom's social–ecological systems, but adds subsystems reflecting heterogeneous stakeholder views and experiences of wildlife‐based services and disservices. To facilitate operationalizing SEEDS and further broader analyses across human–wildlife systems, we devised a list of variables to describe SEEDS subsystems, such as types and level of services and disservices, cost and benefit sharing, and social participation of stakeholders. Steps to implement SEEDS involve engaging local communities and stakeholders to define the subsystems, analyze interactions and outcomes, and identify leverage points and actions to remedy unwanted outcomes. These steps connect SEEDS with other existing approaches in social–ecological research and can guide analyses across systems or within individual systems to provide new insights and management options for sustainable human–wildlife coexistence.
Control de las Compensaciones de los Servicios y Perjuicios Ambientales para Lograr la Coexistencia entre Humanos y Fauna

El mantenimiento de las poblaciones silvestres de fauna, las cuales proporcionan servicios y perjuicios, representa un reto para la conservación a nivel mundial. Los servicios ambientales y los marcos de trabajo de los sistemas socio‐ecológicos de Ostrom se han adoptado en la ciencias naturales y sociales para caracterizar los beneficios que proporciona la naturaleza. A pesar de ser generalizables, individualmente no incluyen herramientas explícitas para tratar el manejo sustentable de muchas poblaciones silvestres. El marco de trabajo SEEDS emula la estructura jerárquica de los sistemas socio‐ecológicos de Ostrom, pero añade subsistemas que reflejan la visión y las experiencias heterogéneas que los accionistas tienen sobre los servicios y perjuicios basados en la fauna. Para facilitar la operación de los SEEDS y ampliar los análisis en todos los sistemas humano‐fauna, diseñamos una lista de variables para describir los subsistemas de los SEEDS, como los tipos y niveles de los servicios y perjuicios, el costo y beneficio del reparto, y la participación social de los accionistas.
