This collection presents written texts of songs in Shoshoni and English, with both figurative and literal translations, and is packaged with a CD containing performances of the songs by Earl and ...Beverly Crum. The songs fall into several categories based on the contexts of their performances, such as dance songs, medicine songs, and handgame songs. The texts are framed with an introduction and commentary discussing the cultural background, meaning, forms, and performance contexts of the songs; Shoshoni language; and methodology. Glossaries of Shoshoni terms are appended. As the first major linguistic study of Shoshoni songs, Newe Hupia is an important contribution to scholarship. It also marks a significant achievement in the preservation of an important aspect of Shoshoni language and culture. And it has literary value as a presentation of Shoshoni verse and aesthetics. Furthermore, many readers and listeners will find the songs to be lyrical, pleasing to the ear, and evocative of the natural world.

Baker outlines the area into which examinations of rap lyrics have been reluctant to stray. Briefly adducing the example of James Joyce, whose prose first insists on language as the ideal ...battleground for political struggle on a uniquely postcolonial level, a discussion of Senegal-born, Francophone rap artist MC Solaar will finally address the manner in which such form-oriented (rather than content-driven) work may force reappraisals of supposedly politicized rap lyrics as well as of the theoretical means critics have developed for reading such achievements.
This article looks critically at folk songs that a Swazi woman composes as she interacts with the social structures that surround her. Through these songs, she expresses her views, feelings and ...desires. The folk songs that will be used for the purposes of this discussion are communal songs that are composed and performed orally by any member of Swazi society. The songs are on social themes, such as cultural values, death, history and politics, as well as the woman's understanding of the workings of the Swazi economy. These songs provide one amongst several potential oral platforms that the Swazi woman can freely utilise to air her views and reflect on the frustrations that she encounters in her multifaceted world.
