El segundo proyecto de Barandiarán, exiliado en la localidad de Sara, fue el Institut Basque de Recherches (Ikuska), en 1946. ...En 1953 regresó a España y tuvo la oportunidad de recuperar sus actividades docentes e investigadoras (en la Universidad de Salamanca, en lo que sería la Cátedra Larramendi, y un Seminario de Etnología con la Sociedad de Ciencias Aranzadi) hasta fraguar el que sería su tercer proyecto, Etniker (Manterola) En efecto, y como ya se ha apuntado, allá por 1968 nacía el Grupo Etniker Navarra gracias a la labor docente e investigadora desarrollada por Barandiarán desde 1964 en la Cátedra de Lengua y Cultura Vasca de la Universidad de Navarra. Studia et documenta (lingüística vasca), en ese mismo año, gracias al impulso de José Esteban Uranga y de José María Satrústegui.

En 1968 ingresó al Departamento de Idiomas de la Universidad Mayor de San Andrés, La Paz (UMSA), donde pasó a enseñar Aymara y a participar en proyectos con lingüistas de todo el mundo. Una poética ...andina de la creación (1998), Hilos Sueltos: Los Andes desde el textil (2007, con Elvira Espejo) y Rincón de las Cabezas: luchas textuales, educación y tierras en los Andes (2000 y reeditada en 2014, también en inglés, 2006, con D. Arnold et al.), obra esta última donde estudian las fricciones entre las reformas educativas bilingües y las realidades socioculturales. Enseñó el idioma a nivel de licenciatura y postgrado en Chile, Perú, Estados Unidos, y entre 2009 a 2012 lideró el proyecto "Comunidades de práctica textil" auspiciado por Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) del Reino Unido y la Universidad de Londres-Birkbeck, que concluyó en tres volúmenes conteniendo vocabularios de términos textiles de la región de Asanaque (Oruro), vocabulario Aymara de Luduvico Bertonio y el vocabulario Quechua de Diego González Holguín.
