In recent decades, genre studies has focused attention on how genres mediate social activities within workplace and academic settings.Genre and the Performance of Publicsmoves beyond institutional ...settings to explore public contexts that are less hierarchical, broadening the theory of how genres contribute to the interconnected and dynamic performances of public life.
Chapters examine how genres develop within publics and how genres tend to mediate performances in public domains, setting up a discussion between public sphere scholarship and rhetorical genre studies. The volume extends the understanding of genres as not only social ways of organizing texts or mediating relationships within institutions but as dynamic performances themselves.
By exploring how genres shape the formation of publics,Genre and the Performance of Publicsbrings rhetoric/composition and public sphere studies into dialogue and enhances the understanding of public genre performances in ways that contribute to research on and teaching of public discourse.
Distinguishing the graphic novel from other types of comic books has presented problems due to the fuzziness of category boundaries. Against the backdrop of prototype theory, the author establishes ...the graphic novel as a genre whose core feature is complexity, which again is defined by seven gradable subcategories: 1) multilayered plot and narration, 2) multireferential use of color, 3) complex text-image relation, 4) meaning-enhancing panel design and layout, 5) structural performativity, 6) references to texts/media, and 7) self-referential and metafictional devices. Regarding the subcategory of narration, the existence of a narrator as known from classical narratology can no longer be assumed. In addition, conventional focalization cannot account for two crucial parameters of the comics image: what is shown (point of view, including mise en scène) and what is seen (character perception). On the basis of François Jost's concepts of ocularization and focalization, this book presents an analytical framework for graphic novels beyond conventional narratology and finally discusses aspects of subjectivity, a focal paradigm in the latest research. It is intended for advanced students of literature, scholars, and comics experts.

This volume brings together contributions focused on, and shaped by, two areas of linguistic research: genre analysis and the interpersonal component of language and discourse. It explores the ...interplay and interaction of genre and the interpersonal component, revealing potential connections and interdependencies between genre conventions and the realisation of interpersonal meanings, viewed from the perspective of the systemic functional approach to language and discourse analysis. The contributions focus on a variety of aspects of the interpersonal in selected genres of professional discourse, including not only communication among professionals, but also genres produced by professionals to address non-specialists. The volume consists of nine chapters grouped into three sections, guiding readers through four major discourse domains, namely media discourse, academic discourse, institutional discourse, and promotional discourse. Institutional and promotional discourses are combined in a single section, reflecting the hybridism of the majority of the genres under investigation here: genres of institutional discourse typically exhibit features akin to advertising, not only presenting the institutions in terms of the scope of their activities and services, but also serving a clear promotional purpose. The studies document how omnipresent, varied and plentiful the strategies of intersubjective positioning are, and how significant their position in genres and discourses invariably is. The social and cultural grounding of genres requires them to be conventional, yet it also ensures their flexibility, continuous development and change--qualities which make genres a permanent challenge and inspiration for research and discussion.
This case study examines postgraduate students' practices, sources of knowledge, and difficulties and challenges in regard to providing genre-based peer feedback on their peers' academic writing at a ...research-oriented university in Macau. The analysis of multiple sources of data including the students' written feedback on their peers' thesis drafts, the thesis drafts, semi-structured interviews and stimulated recalls revealed that while the participants were able to provide genre-based feedback, most of the feedback focused on the linguistic features, content and organisation of the theses, and helped the students meet the institutional requirements of what constitutes a thesis. The study also found that the participants perceived giving genre-based peer feedback to be difficult and challenging. Their difficulties stemmed from a lack of specific knowledge about the thesis genre, their concerns about their own linguistic proficiency, their concerns about the usefulness and correctness of their feedback, and the effects their criticism would have on the writers' feelings and emotions.
While video games have been widely investigated from the perspective of play, an emerging online media phenomenon is the spectating of video game play, captivating millions of users daily. This study ...investigates the relationship of video game genres, content type and viewer gratification in the context of live gaming. To study this phenomenon, we employ an online questionnaire study (N = 1097) to investigate six categories of gratifications: affective, information seeking, learning to play, personal integrative, social integrative & tension release motivations and their relationship with game genres and stream types. The results of this study demonstrate that “the medium is the message”, highlight the importance of archetypal structure (i.e. the type of streamed content) over content topic (i.e. the genre of games being streamed), and help to build a better understanding of user generated content and the democratization of media.
•This study helps understand the relation between content type and topic.•Content structure is shown to be more important than content topic for consumption.•The results indicate that, indeed, “the medium is the message”.•Games may offer highly varying gratifications when played and when spectated.
