Shem Pete (1896-1989), a colorful and brilliant raconteur from
Susitna Station, Alaska, left a rich legacy of knowledge about the
Upper Cook Inlet Dena'ina world. Shem was one of the most versatile
...storytellers and historians in twentieth century Alaska, and his
lifetime travel map of approximately 13,500 square miles is one of
the largest ever documented with this degree of detail anywhere in
the world. The first two editions of Shem Pete's Alaska
contributed much to Dena'ina cultural identity and public
appreciation of the Dena'ina place names network in Upper Cook
Inlet. This new edition adds nearly thirty new place names to its
already extensive source material from Shem Pete and more than
fifty other contributors, along with many revisions and new
annotations. The authors provide synopses of Dena'ina language and
culture and summaries of Dena'ina geographic knowledge, and they
also discuss their methodology for place name research.
Exhaustively refined over more than three decades, Shem Pete's
Alaska will remain the essential reference work on the
landscape of the Dena'ina people of Upper Cook Inlet. As a book of
ethnogeography, Native language materials, and linguistic
scholarship, the extent of its range and influence is unlikely to
be surpassed.
The paper deals with the standardization of the use of the letter ё in the official toponymy of Russia. A long-term monitoring of the toponymic data presented in the State catalogue of geographical ...names revealed that the use/non-use of the letter ё is a typical case for orthographic variation. Presently, many hundreds of geographical names are unauthorized and require standardization because of the variation in spelling. In the author’s opinion, this kind of orthographic variation is due to Russian orthography reforms and inconsistent regulations on the named letter’s occurrence. The solution to this problem may thus relate to a more precise specification of contemporary usage of the letter ё in Russian toponymy, obtained through statistical analysis. For this purpose, the paper includes the outcomes of two experiments evaluating the frequency of its use in place names on the national and regional scale. The results suggest that while the tendency for non-use predominates numerically nation-wise, particularly in the names with the Russian origin, the said letter is still widely used in regional toponymy. The author identifies the areas with the highest degree of its use, supposedly affected by the peculiarities of the local toponymic system, particularly in terms of the wide use of the letter ё in non-Russian toponymy and the influence of local dialect features. The paper argues that a consecutive use of the letter ё whenever necessary may provide for the consistency of its use in geographical names, both in oral and written communication. However, this proves elusive at present because of the well-established practice for the selective use of the letter ё. The most efficient solution for standardizing geographical names with variable use of the letter ё is the standardization of the presently unauthorized titles, based on general rules for the use of the letter ё, along with the consideration of special aspects of regional toponymy.

Yet, the article employs the term Turkish Eurasianism as a shorthand to describe the ways in which Eurasia and Eurasianism are employed in Turkey. Second, Turkish Eurasianism is nothing but the use or instrumentalization of Eurasia to create a geopolitical identity for Turkey that legitimizes its political, economic, and strategic interests primarily in the post-Soviet space, but, from time to time, also in the Balkans and Africa. Various Turkish state and non-state actors have used Eurasia to mean different things and justify different goals: reaching out to Turkic Republics, being pro-Russian, creating a sphere of influence in former Ottoman lands, or, recently, cloaking anti-Western currents.

In Being and Place among the Tlingit, anthropologist Thomas F. Thornton examines the concept of place in the language, social structure, economy, and ritual of southeast Alaska's Tlingit Indians. ...Place signifies not only a specific geographical location but also reveals the ways in which individuals and social groups define themselves.
The notion of place consists of three dimensions - space, time, and experience - which are culturally and environmentally structured. Thornton examines each in detail to show how individual and collective Tlingit notions of place, being, and identity are formed. As he observes, despite cultural and environmental changes over time, particularly in the post-contact era since the late eighteenth century, Tlingits continue to bind themselves and their culture to places and landscapes in distinctive ways. He offers insight into how Tlingits in particular, and humans in general, conceptualize their relationship to the lands they inhabit, arguing for a study of place that considers all aspects of human interaction with landscape.
In Tlingit, it is difficult even to introduce oneself without referencing places in Lingit Aani (Tlingit Country). Geographic references are embedded in personal names, clan names, house names, and, most obviously, in k-waan names, which define regions of dwelling. To say one is Sheet'ka K-waan defines one as a member of the Tlingit community that inhabits Sheet'ka (Sitka).
Being and Place among the Tlingit makes a substantive contribution to the literature on the Tlingit, the Northwest Coast cultural area, Native American and indigenous studies, and to the growing social scientific and humanistic literature on space, place, and landscape.

Abstract
Kulon Progo Regency, part of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, has undergone political and administrative divisions, thereby leading to a dynamic geographical name change. Presently, this ...regency does not yet have a database for geographical names, which are part of cultural heritage to reveal historical events. Therefore, this study aims to conduct an inventory of geographical names in the Kulon Progo Regency through multitemporal historical maps and interpret their meanings. The inventory was carried out by digitizing scanned topographic maps stored on the Leiden University repository website and interpreting the meaning of geographical names through dictionaries and history books. Inventory using historical maps is an effective method of revealing past events. The result found that physical geographical names dominated 78 or 54% of villages, with 45%, 35%, and 20% consisting of biotic, non-biotic and topological aspects. Meanwhile, non-physical geographical names comprised 61 villages, incorporating 26%, 8% and 10% social, economic and cultural aspects.
Jules Verne, in his novel The Mysterious Island, depicts how people draw on various sources to name geographical features on an uninhabited island. This provides a model for analysing the names of ...Marion Island and its geographical features, which can be compared with the typology of the Australian National Placenames Survey (ANPS). A brief history of the naming of Marion Island itself precedes an account of the sources of the names for its features. There are similarities and differences between the kinds of sources used on Verne's island, Marion Island, and the South African mainland and in the ANPS typology. Developments in recording the names on Marion Island and placing them on a map are described. Since 2001, public reaction to pre-democratic naming practices in South Africa has influenced practices related to Marion Island.
