Pan's Labyrinth offers an interesting, if somewhat extreme, example of how a child in harsh situations may isolate herself from reality. This form of a personal fantasy is inspired by a child's love ...of fairy tales, probably a form of escapism itself. However, even in the tragic unfolding of the story, those characters who can withstand the situational evil are those that are conveyed with heroic characteristics. The film leaves us with this principle: that although evil may come in many forms, heroism itself may also come from nothing, indicating that all of us have an innate possibility of being heroes.
Abstract: One of the most striking features of modern sport is the ability to transform some athletes into heroes. It is a phenomenon in which the media play a fundamental role in building a mythical aura around certain athletes. Therefore, this article seeks to analyze how the Brazilian written press elaborated the heroic image around the figure of the capoeira Cyriaco, brazilian who, in May 1909, became famous for defeating a Japanese jiu-jitsu practitioner who until then was seen as invincible. The sources selected to achieve this aim were located in the written press, between the years 1909 to 1925. As a conclusion, it is pointed out that Cyriaco was one of the first Brazilian sports heroes from the popular classes who was elevated to a symbol of the nascent republic that lacked idols that could be identified with the emerging mestizo nation.
This article examines the phenomenon of heroic metamorphosis: what it is, how it unfolds, and why it is important. First, we describe six types of transformation of the hero: mental, moral, ...emotional, spiritual, physical, and motivational. We then argue that these metamorphoses serve five functions: they foster developmental growth, promote healing, cultivate social unity, advance society, and deepen cosmic understanding. Internal and external sources of transformation are discussed, with emphasis on the importance of mentorship in producing metamorphic growth. Next we describe the three arcs of heroic transformation: egocentricity to sociocentricity, dependence to autonomy, and stagnation to growth. We then discuss three activities that promote heroic metamorphosis as well as those that hinder it. Implications for research on human growth and development are discussed.
The article examines the novels by I. Melezh (“People of the Marsh”) and V. Gnilomedov (“Ulysses from Pruska”) through the central characters – Vasil Dyatel and Lyavon Kuzhal. It is noted that these ...novels have not only a great deal of common ground but also significant differences in the description of everyday life, habits, figures of the main characters. In particular, the Belarusian nature is studied from the point of view of sociocentrism and personocentrism, so the corresponding type of hero is considered as the type of a “new” Belarusian is analysed. It is emphasised that V. Gnilomedov’s novel presents the main character with a predominant personality-centred principle, while a social-centred principle is observed in I. Melezh’s hero.
Hero and Leander are the protagonists in a classical tale of epic but tragic love. Hero lives secluded in a tower on the European shore of the Hellespont, and Leander on the opposite side of the ...passage. Since they cannot hope to marry, the couple resolves to meet in secret: each night he swims across to her, guided by the light of her torch. But the time comes when a winter storm kills both the light and Leander. At dawn, Hero sees her lover’s mangled body washed ashore, and so hurls herself from the tower to meet him in death. Silvia Montiglio here shows how and why this affecting story has proved to be one of the most popular and perennial mythologies in the history of the West. Discussing its singular drama, danger, pathos and eroticism, the author explores the origin of the legend and its rich and varied afterlives. She shows how it was used by Greek and Latin writers; how it developed in the Middle Ages - notably in the writings of Christine de Pizan - and Renaissance; how it inspired Byron to swim the Dardanelles; and how it has lived on in representations by artists including Rubens and Frederic Leighton.
•Experimental data on Heavy Liquid Metal flow in the CIRCE-HERO facility.•Numerical benchmark activity on Heavy Liquid Metal with SYS-TH codes and SYS-TH/CFD codes.•HERO double wall bayonet tube ...steam genarator thermal–hydraulic characterization.•CIRCE-HERO experimental campaign on protected loss of flow accident scenarios.
In the framework of the HORIZON2020 SESAME European project, an experimental campaign has been carried out on the large Lead-Bismuth Eutectic pool integral effect CIRCE facility at ENEA Brasimone Research Center, implementing the HERO test section. This test section is aimed at supporting the development of the ALFRED design. Within the SESAME Project, three protected loss of flow accident tests have been designed and executed, identified as SE-Test1, SE-Test2, and SE-Test3. The third test (SE-Test3) has been selected by the project participants for a benchmark activity involving system thermal-hydraulic codes and coupled system thermalhydraulic/ CFD. This activity has been divided into two phases: a blind phase, and a post-test phase. The present paper illustrates the results achieved during the post-test phase of the CIRCE-HERO benchmark activity. Four participants simulated the experimental test. Three (ENEA, SCKCEN and UNIROMA1) used different versions of RELAP5 code, i.e. RELAP5-3D and RELAP5Mod3.3, and one (NRG) used a coupled approach based on an in-house system thermal-hydraulic code (SPECTRA) and the commercial code ANSYS CFX. The benchmark activity hereafter presented is a relevant exercise for evaluating and comparing the predictive capabilities of system thermal-hydraulic codes, CFD codes and coupled technics, in relation to phenomena occurring during the transition between forced and natural circulation (e.g. loss of flow) in a heavy liquid metals Generation IV system. The results of the numerical exercise showed an adequate capability of the codes to reproduce the relevant phenomena involved during the experiment. The SYS-TH codes have been more accurate than SYS-TH/CFD in predicting the trend of the main parameters during the transient, reproducing them with quite satisfactory accuracy. SYS-TH/CFD simulation, instead, provided a more satisfactory representation of the pool thermal stratification. The results highlighted that the planning and the execution of experiments fully devoted for the code V&V process is needed for the further development of such numerical tools, in particular for SYS-TH/CFD coupled approaches, whose use is more recent respect to SYS-TH codes.
Sport has been a source of artistic inspiration since antiquity, e.g. in ancient Greece the sporting heroes of that time were passionately sung about. This is also true of literature, which often ...depicts the drama of sporting rivalry and describes the resulting strong emotions; not once does it evoke nostalgia for times gone by, for important sporting events that are constantly recalled. This article analyzes the presence of sport (using the example of sports disciplines and prominent figures) in poetry through the works of a contemporary Polish author, Krzysztof Zuchora (born in 1940). The research carried out required familiarization with numerous monographs and other publications (academic articles, popular science articles and chapters in monographs), both in English and Polish, in which the broadly understood relationship between sport and literature is presented; the primary source material, however, consists mainly of selected poetic works by the above-mentioned outstanding author. Importantly, the interpretation of several characteristic sports poems by Krzysztof Zuchora was combined with the analysis of historical sources. The study has undeniably shown that literary works are an important chronicle of historical events, while sport – as a powerful source of inspiration par excellence – has great potential for shaping human attitudes and building a better world in many respects.
This article examines the figure of the passive hero first in the Korean literature of origins, and then in classical Korean literature of the Koryŏ and Chosŏn periods. After a general introductory ...section, in which the worldwide literary archetype of the hero and its evolution over time are examined, the author, specifically examining Korean literature, analyzes in part one the passive heroes of four short historical/mythological stories variously set in an era between the second and eighth centuries, and then part two of the article analyzes three passive hero figures as protagonists of one 14th-century tale and two 18th-century classic novels. The author thus shows how the narrative of the passive hero has undergone a significant transformation in Korea, passing from a mythical/spiritual state (which often does not even admit the figure of an antagonist) to a decidedly secular, materialist and politicized condition where the protagonists find themselves facing cultural superstructures which, in addition to generating antagonists, push passive heroes towards true forms of defensive fundamentalism.
