In the Greek schools of the Roman Empire, the handbooks of rhetoric (Progymnasmata) defined ekphrasis as a speech that brings the subject matter vividly before the eyes. These manuals also point to ...Thucydides as one of the best specialists in this rhetorical technique which consisted, essentially, to give vividness (enargeia) imagery to the speech as a way to engage the imagination and feelings of the reader. In this article we present a set of examples, taken from the History of the Peloponnesian War, which prove the skill of the Athenian historian to make us “see” the events in the mind's eye. After that and using the opinions of Paul Ricœur around history and fiction (from the normal and healthy coexistence between readability and visibility along with the ethic power of the textual image in situations that cry out applause or disapproval), we will see how this rhetorical and fictional strategy, used by Thucydides and recovered now by Ricoeur for the studio of contemporary historiography, can be reconciled with a discipline that aims at objectivity, impartiality and scientific rigor.
Conventionally, the focus of history writing is ‘public’ lives and ‘public’ events. Maharaja Kumari Binodini Devi’s Boro Sahib Ongbi Sanatombi (The princess and the political agent, 1976), however, ...inverts this dominant tradition, diverting the attention of the reader from the larger ‘public’ events in Manipur’s history to a very specific and ‘private’ love relationship between her aunt Maharaja Kumari Sanatombi Devi and Major Horatio St. John Maxwell, the first political agent of British-occupied Manipur. This paper shows how the liminal form of Binodini’s book allows it to become a site for contestation and negotiation between public and private histories as it simultaneously confuses the line between history and fiction. To prove its point, it reveals first the blurring of the line between history and fiction in Boro Sahib Ongbi Sanatombi, and then demonstrates the relation between public and private histories in the book. Finally, the paper analyses the public–private (histories) distinction in a colonial relationship as illustrated in the book.
By reimagining William Faulkner's 1954 visit to Brazil, Antônio Dutra's Dias de Faulkner (2008) establishes a creative dialogue with Faulkner's oeuvre while also inquiring into the author's enigmatic ...personality. In the process Dutra's narrative invites us to reflect on the complex and contradictory relationship between the writer as a private creator and as a public intellectual, on the phenomenology of reading, as well as on the interplay between history and fiction.

Le récit magico-réaliste entretient avec l’écriture de l’histoire un rapport très étroit. Entre les années 1940 et les années 1980, dans toute l’aire géographique américaine, s’est développé et a ...évolué une fiction magico-réaliste qui se donne comme objectif la transcription de données anthropologiques, concernant les populations dominées américaines, qu’elles soient composées d’autochtones, d’esclaves ou de descendants d’esclaves, dans un univers romanesque où réalisme et magie se côtoient sans tensions. Ainsi, en abordant les périodes passées du continent américain, les auteurs de récits magico-réalistes ont construit un type de fiction qu’ils ont façonné dans le but de permettre une expression littéraire de l’opération historiographique, qui ne peut pas se substituer à la science historique, mais qui peut donner, d’une façon qui tire parti des potentialités de la fiction, une voix à ceux qu’un discours dominant et des structures de pouvoir ont longtemps laissés dans l’ombre. Nous étudierons donc comment les récits magico-réalistes écrivent l’histoire, et notamment restituent des visions du monde longtemps ignorées, dans une perspective proche de l’histoire des représentations. Une telle entreprise littéraire et historique constitue par-là même un phénomène structurant pour le champ littéraire américain, mais aussi caribéen. Notre corpus d’étude trilingue réunit des auteurs de tout le continent américain : Miguel Ángel Asturias, Alejo Carpentier, Juan Rulfo, Toni Morrison, Wilson Harris, Toni Cade Bambara, Jean-Louis Baghio’o, Jacques Stephen Alexis et Maryse Condé.
The magical realistic narrative is deeply linked with the writing of history. Between the 1940’s and the 1980’s, throughout the entire America, has been developed and has evolved the magic realism which let the authors of such narratives to transcribe anthropological datas, coming from dominated populations of America (Natives, slaves or former slaves) in novels in which realism and magic can mix without tension. Then, by describing the past periods of the American continent, the authors of magic realism narratives have built a kind of fiction able to imitate, but not replace, the historical investigation : they can, with the help of the specific resources of fiction, give a voice to those who where kept in the dark for so long. We will study how the authors of magic realism narratives write history, et transcribe the representations of people who were not considered before. Such a literary phenomenon is fundamental in the building of an American literary filed. Our trilingual corpus gathers these nine authors : Miguel Ángel Asturias, Alejo Carpentier, Juan Rulfo, Toni Morrison, Wilson Harris, Toni Cade Bambara, Jean-Louis Baghio’o, Jacques Stephen Alexis et Maryse Condé.
Les Bienveillantes de Jonathan Littell a créé l’événement de la rentrée littéraire 2006 en France à sa publication. Selon l’auteur, la portée du roman dépasse le seul génocide des Juifs pour revêtir ...une dimension universelle. Par ailleurs, le roman a été comparé à de grandes œuvres russes, notamment à Guerre et Paix de Tolstoï, à Vie et destin de Vassili Grossman. Outre Eschylle, Jonathan Littell reconnaît sa dette à d’autres tragiques grecs comme Sophocle et son Électre, mais aussi Euripide, dont l’Oreste est rendu fou par les Érinyes. Les angles d’approche dans Les Bienveillantes de Jonathan Littell sont aussi nombreux que variés sans prétendre à l’exhaustivité. Ce recueil n’est pas un jugement de l’œuvre, ni une interrogation sur sa recevabilité, pas plus qu’une assertion sur les limites de sa légitimité en tant que roman ou une justification, mais ce recueil est novateur puisque le premier à se concentrer sur le texte des Bienveillantes. Jusqu’à présent la discussion concernant ce roman a largement été déterminée par les études monographiques d’un auteur dont l’examen littéraire s’est avéré monologique. Le présent recueil offre un éventail plus riche d’angles d’approches, sociologiques, culturelles, historiques, poético-rhétoriques, interdisciplinaires, intertextuelles, sans exclure l’approche freudienne. Ainsi les analyses ont-elles, par exemple, accentué les personnages dont le narrateur, les personnages historiques, les personnages fictifs avec la famille du narrateur - sœur jumelle et parents, beau-père - et tous les autres personnages dont fourmille le roman. Mais aussi, les aspects formels, comme le point de vue du narrateur, le style, l’architecture du roman, son esthétique et les influences littéraires voire la réécriture des mythes. Et encore, les thèmes tels le parricide, l’homosexualité - qui ne va pas sans poser de problèmes pour un nazi qui veut faire carrière - avec, bien entendu, l’antisémitisme et la Shoah représentés, la “solution finale” que le narrateur juge inutile. L’idéologie impliquée se devait d’être interrogée également. Un autre thème crucial du roman est la manière dont le massacre des Juifs est posé en tant que “problème à résoudre”, problème de statistique et problème de comptabilité. Ce qui amène la question entre le Bien et le Mal et la banalisation de ce dernier, l’Allemagne nazie durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. La réception de l’œuvre et les raisons de son succès qui lui valu plusieurs grands prix littéraires a été abordée ainsi que les éléments du grotesque que certains n’ont pas manqué de remarquer.

This paper provides an account of the development of the North Carolina History and Fiction Digital Library (http://www.lib.ecu.edu/ncc/historyfiction/) from an idea into a worldwide resource in two ...years. The principal investigator for the project introduces the Web site and gives practical and technical information that can be used as a model in other digital projects. The paper includes use statistics; reactions to the site; suggestions for how students, historians, genealogists, and other researchers can use the site; and plans for enhancements.
