► Development processes of dynamic capabilities are context-specific. ► Dynamic capabilities differ between firms in their manifestations. ► Dynamic capabilities have both idiosyncratic and common ...features across an industry.
Dynamic capabilities are the higher-order capabilities needed for changing operational-level capabilities and learning in new domains, and thus they are critical for innovation activities. The aim of this study is to explore heterogeneity of dynamic capabilities in a comparative setting. We chose four innovative case firms representing a single industry, namely magazine publishing. The similarity of the cases provided a solid foundation for comparing their dynamic capabilities. Based on the results it seems that the practices comprising sensing capabilities are likely to be similar across firms within a single industry, while practices comprising seizing and reconfiguring types of capabilities may differ more between companies. Thus dynamic capabilities have both idiosyncratic and common features across an industry. These findings are relevant to practicing managers in that they illustrate that competing companies within the same industry tend to develop similar types of practices to match the changing requirement of the operating environment. Hence, managers should not be falsely comforted by the current situation within their firms, but proactively develop their unique capabilities to gain advantage over their competitors.

This study performs a fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to determine the conditions that lead to high performance of independent financial advisors. The study examines the ...performance of these companies in terms of their involvement in innovation activities, participation in business networks, and open innovation as a strategy to cope with difficult market conditions resulting from the recent economic downturn. This approach clarifies the relationship between combinations of conditions and high performance. The results suggest that involvement in innovation activities is the most relevant factor in financial advisors performance. Independent financial advisors may achieve higher sales thanks to engaging in innovation activities.
Purpose
This study examines whether a firm’s management earnings forecasts affect its technical innovation activities. Our study also examines whether the cost of debt plays a mediating role between ...the management earnings forecasts and the innovation nexus.
Design/methodology/approach
We obtained data from 1,032 Chinese non-financial firms listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets from 2005 to 2022 (i.e. 18,576 firm-year observations). We used various econometrics techniques, such as Heckman’s (1979) two-stage selection method and two-stage least square, to examine the relationship between management earnings forecasts and the firm’s technical innovation activities.
Findings
We find a positive relationship between management earnings forecasts and the firms' technical innovation. We also find that the cost of debt mediates the relationship between management earnings forecast and technical innovation. Further analysis indicates that frequent earnings forecasts provide incremental information regarding a firm’s future value and cash flows, thus reducing the volatility and uncertainty in cash flow calculations. Our findings are robust to several tests.
Originality/value
Our study has implications for policymakers, practitioners and high-level management of Chinese firms, enabling them to understand the relationship between management earnings forecasts and firms' innovation activities.
This paper from the perspective of productivity changes examines the impact of innovation activities and foreign direct investment (FDI) on improved green productivity (IGP) in developing countries. ...We divide the sample into two sub-groups; the BRICS and the other developing countries so as to account for underlying country heterogeneity. The analysis follows a panel data approach over the period 1991 to 2014, and used the global Malmquist-Luenberger productivity index to measure IGP. The results indicate that IGP in developing countries has declined. Innovation activities have a positive impact on IGP. FDI has a significant negative impact on IGP. Further study finds that there are threshold effects between FDI and IGP based on innovation activities, when the developing countries with a low-level of innovation, FDI has a negative impact on IGP; when the developing countries innovation activities above the threshold, innovation activities and FDI both can promote IGP.
In the article investigated the system of selecting priorities innovation of enterprise. Considered the essence of the concept of innovation in the legal framework and scientific periodicals. Founded ...that innovation in a market economy is one of the key factors that ensure efficiency and redistribution of tangible and intangible resources, competitiveness and influence on improving the return and profitability. Analyzed of the current state of innovation activity in Ukraine, through which stipulated that in Ukraine there are many problems and obstacles to innovation development of economy, but remains untapped innovation potential benefits that contribute to economic development.Considered the priorities of innovation activity in Ukraine, which are divided into strategic and medium-term. Proposed using of the system the choice of priorities of innovation of the enterprises, which includes six consecutive stages. These stages are: research innovation potential levels national, regional, sectoral and enterprise levels; searching target markets for innovation; determine the resource potential of an innovative project by establishing requirements and review of financial resources; the timing of the implementation of innovative projects; definition and rationale for the introduction and implementation of innovations; study the reality of implementation and effectiveness of the implementation of innovative project. Determined that the system of selecting priorities innovation enterprise should also have certain options and tools to ensure this selection. Parameters such selection was determined as follows: the importance and maturity, scale, focus on the highest technological structure, in terms of structuring a hierarchical system. The instrument such selection set: legal, organizational, financial and economic. In implementing the priorities for innovation enterprises defined effects will be achieved, namely economic, social, technological, environmental.
This study investigates two types of firm capabilities (network and innovation) that could enhance the effects of open innovation activities (inbound and outbound) on radical innovation with the ...consideration of environmental dynamism. Based on a cross-industry survey of 201 Asian firms, we find that the effectiveness of firm capabilities and open innovation activities is contingent on the level of environmental dynamism. Specifically, when the level of environmental dynamism increases, inbound activities, network capabilities, and innovation capabilities are able to enhance radical innovation. In addition, the level of environmental dynamism moderates the effect of network capabilities on both inbound and outbound activities in creating radical innovation, but not so with the effect of innovation capabilities. Overall, this study contributes to the open innovation literature by shedding light on important complementarities between inbound/outbound activities and specific types of firm-enabled capabilities (network and innovation) under conditions of environmental dynamism.
•We examine how industry characteristics affect industry innovation activities in Chinese high-tech industries.•We find that foreign competition is positively associated with the intensity of buy ...activity, but negatively affects the intensity of make activity.•Domestic skill intensity weakens the impact of foreign competitive pressure on industry innovation activities.
Using panel data analysis for a sample of Chinese high-technology industries from 1998 to 2008, this study examines how industry characteristics affect industry innovation activities. Differing from existing studies, our research considers the impact of foreign competition on innovation activities at industry level in a large emerging economy. The results indicate that the intensity of competition from foreign invested enterprises (FIEs) and domestic skill intensity affect industry buy and make activities. Foreign competition is positively associated with the intensity of buy activity, but negatively affects the intensity of make activity. Further, the findings show that domestic skill intensity weakens the impact of foreign competitive pressure on innovation activities. Our empirical evidence has important policy implications.
