Business model design becomes an essential source of firm innovation in the current competitive world. Business model innovation refers to the creation or reinvention of existing business models by ...designing novel value-creation systems, proposing new value propositions, and building original value-capturing mechanisms. However, to adopt the innovative business model in any organization, the inertia to change is a substantial barrier, and its role has not been examined completely. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of organizational inertia on open innovation, business model innovation, and corporate performance. Using the survey as the research model, data were collected from 160 companies operating in the information technology industry in the city of Tehran. These firms were selected via judgment sampling method. The hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling technique via SmartPLS2 software. Based on the findings, organizational inertia has a negative relationship with business model innovation and open innovation; though, business model innovation and open innovation have a positive effect on the performance.

Despite extensive discussion about the relationship between market competition and innovation performance, the impact of market competition on the innovation efficiency of high-technology industries ...in a transitional economy is still unclear. The article is based on panel data of 17 subsectors of China's high-tech industry spanning the 2001-2016 period. Using stochastic the frontier analysis model, we empirically test the impact of market competition on two-stage innovation efficiency from the perspective of the industry. The results indicate that market competition and firm scale have positive and significant effects on the efficiency of two-stage innovation, the effects of industry export intensity and government intervention on R&D efficiency are negative, but the effects are different for the efficiency of the commercialisation of technology. Based on the results of the empirical analysis, this paper compares the trends and the differences between R&D efficiency and commercialisation efficiency, and then uses cluster analysis to reclassify China's high-tech industries into three categories, thus revealing the disconnect and imbalance within China's high-tech industries. At the end of the article, we present some possible policy recommendations.
Strong interaction of innovative actors within a local network is commonly said to increase the region-specific knowledge-stock, leading to a comparative advantage. However, it might also lead to a ...lock-in situation if local trajectories are directed towards inferior solutions. Accordingly, it is argued that successful clusters are characterised by the existence of gatekeepers, i.e. actors that generate novelty by drawing on local and external knowledge. We apply social network analysis based on patent data to analyse structural differences between the innovation systems of four East German regions and study the characteristics of gatekeepers therein. The regional networks appear to be significantly different with respect to the degree of interaction and with respect to their outward orientation. Concerning the characteristics of gatekeepers, we find that absorptive capacity is more important than size. Public research organisations serve the functions of a gatekeeper to a higher degree than private actors.
Prior research on innovation management self-assessment audits (IMSA) has a strong focuson the assessment situation, primarily on what to assess. However, several additional tasks are necessary10 to ...make purposeful use of an IMSA. This study analyzes the undertaking of an IMSA from a processperspective to better understand IMSA’s utilization by looking at how people participate in the processand how the process is integrated in an organizational context. This study adopted an interactive researchapproach and collected data over a period of 27 months in 45 interviews, six workshops, and 10 meetingswith 42 different participants from three companies. Results show a fragmented participation, and that15 the process was only partly integrated into the organizational context, making it arbitrarily dependenton individual actors. This demonstrates the need to understand challenges related to IMSA use to enablea process that is integrated in the structures intended to be improved.

This paper explores the economic incentives for medical procedure innovation. Using a proprietary dataset on billing code applications for emerging medical procedures, we highlight two mechanisms ...that could hinder innovation. First, the administrative hurdle of securing permanent, reimbursable billing codes substantially delays innovation diffusion. We find that Medicare utilization of innovative procedures increases nearly nine-fold after the billing codes are promoted to permanent (reimbursable) from provisional (non-reimbursable). However, only 29 percent of the provisional codes are promoted within the five-year probation period. Second, medical procedures lack intellectual property rights, especially those without patented devices. When appropriability is limited, specialty medical societies lead the applications for billing codes. We indicate that the ad hoc process for securing billing codes for procedure innovations creates uncertainty about both the development process and the allocation and enforceability of property rights. This stands in stark contrast to the more deliberate regulatory oversight for pharmaceutical innovations.
This paper examines the role business environments (in terms of dynamism and competitiveness) as contingency factors which affect the effectiveness of different types of innovation strategies (in ...terms of product and process) in delivering business performance. Using the data of 207 manufacturing firms in Australia, this study shows that dynamic environments strengthen the effect of product innovation on business performance. Competitive environments, on the other hand, weaken the effect of product innovation on business performance, but strengthen the effect of process innovation on business performance. Overall, this study demonstrates the strategic fit between dynamism and product innovation strategy as well as between competitiveness and process innovation strategy. On the other hand, competitiveness also shows a strategic mismatch with product innovation. The theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
New disruptive technologies in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT), especially, are changing the manner in which knowledge is managed within organizations, calling for a new and inventive ...knowledge management system and an open approach, to foster knowledge flows. This pattern expectedly should also enhance the development of internal knowledge management capacity, which in turn is a prerequisite of firm's innovativeness. In this context, the main goal of this research is to investigate the relationship among knowledge management system, open innovation, knowledge management capacity and innovation capacity. To reach this goal, the research employs structural equation modelling on a sample of 298 Italian firms from different sectors. The findings indicate that knowledge management system facilitates the creation of open and collaborative ecosystems, and the exploitation of internal and external flows of knowledge, through the development of internal knowledge management capacity, which in turn increases innovation capacity. The research further draws on its findings to identify significant scholarly and managerial implications, and to prescribe future research directions.
Despite extensive discussion about the important role of government in enterprise development, the function of government grants in the innovation activities of high-technology (high-tech) industries ...is still unclear. In this paper, the stochastic frontier model and a unique panel data set of 17 high-tech industries in China spanning the 2001–2011 period are applied to explore how government grants affect the innovation performance of these industries. Results indicate that the innovation efficiency of high-tech industries rapidly improved in the past decade. However, it is found that government grants exert a negative influence on innovation efficiency of high-tech industries. However, the impact of private R&D funding is significant and positive. Furthermore, when the high-tech industries are grouped into five sub-industries, the results show that government grants had different effects on the innovation in each sub-industry.
