A field experiment with maize and rice planted under four planting configurations in an intercropping system was conducted to evaluate the plant competition effects on the performance of component ...crops. Intercropping substantially reduced grain yields of both rice and maize. Rice yield was generally low giving monocrop yield of 1,084 kg/ha. Intercropped rice ranged between 179 kg/ha and 615 kg/ha depending on maize planting arrangement. Monocrop maize yielded highest in square planting (3,617 kg/ha) and lowest in skip‐row (2,600 kg/ha) planting, but planting geometry did not influence intercropped maize yield. Monocrop maize outyielded the combined yield of component crops suggesting no yield advantage through rice‐maize intercropping.

A 1‐year study was conducted in 1983/84 at 2 experimental sites in Brazil to determine the effect of Azolla green‐manure (AO), A. intercrop (OA) and their combination (AA) on rice yield in comparison ...to mineral fertilization with urea. Nitrogen sources were combined with 4 rice sowing/planting systems.
On terraced terra‐roxa soil (Paleudalf) in subtropical northern Paraná State, transplanted rice (T) yielded 8.66 t · ha−1 compared to pregerminated (P), direct‐sown (D) and conventionally sown (C) rice with 7.92; 7.73 and 7.48 t · ha−1, respectively. N‐source treatments yielded 9.33; 8.54 and 7.34 t · ha−1 for AA, OA and AO compared to 8.46; 7.98 and 6.05 for 100, 50 and 0 kg N · ha−1, respectively. Fertilizer‐nitrogen equivalence (FNE) of Azolla treatments compared to urea broadcast in 3 applications ranged between 0 and more than 100 kg N · ha−1.
On hydromorphic latosol (Ustic Dystropept) in tropical Goiás State, rice yields were 4.07; 2.52; 1.46 and. 1.33 t · ha−1 for systems T, P, C and D, respectively. N‐source treatments yielded 2.79; 1.98 and 1.78 t · ha−1 for AA, AO and OA compared to 3.43; 2.63 and 1.46 t · ha−1 for 60; 30 and 0 kg N · ha−1 as urea broadcast in 2 applications, respectively. FNE of Azolla was between 0 and 56 kg N · ha−1.

Organic systems were evaluated for cassava root production directed to human comsumption in natura, at Seropédica-RJ. Treatments consisted of: cassava ('IAC 576-70') in single cropping and its intercropping with corn ('Eldorado'), cowpea ('Mauá') or corn plus cowpea. The organic management was standardized and the experimental area was submitted to artificial irrigation during the period of stay of maize in the system. "Green" (immature) corn ears were harvested at the "point" required for fresh marketing and the shoot placed on the ground. The cowpea was included to function as green manure being cut at flowering with residues left on the soil surface. Corn and cowpea were sown between cassava rows, in an alternate design, following the first weeding of the main crop (cassava). The cultivar IAC 576-70 showed suitability with respect to organic management, yielding approximatelu 31 Mg ha-1 of marketable roots. No significant differences were detected between cassava single cropping and any of the intercropping tested systems. Thus, corn crop has considerable potential for additional income to the growers. Yield of 'Eldorado' corn averaged 18.125 ears ha-1 correspponding to 5,1 Mg ha-1. Residues coming from cowpea cutting brought about an input close to 12 Mg ha-1, which meant an expressive contribution in nutrient elements, especially nitrogen (about 44 kg N ha-1). The legume crop, in addition, completely covered cassava inter-rows demonstrating its potential for controlling erosion and weeds. The triple intercropping becomes advantageous considering that corn harvesting would justify irrigation and that inclusion of cowpea meant benefitial effects to the system and did not interfere on cassava yield.

The experiment was accomplished in the experimental field of Univale from december/1998 to may/1999. Three systems comprising mayze intercrop with bean were assessed: Double-spaced rows of mayze 0,5 m and 1,5 m between couples with three bean rows (system 1); simple-spaced rows of mayze 1,0 m with a row of bean in the middle (system 2); simple rows of mayze 1,0 m with two rows of bean in the middle (system 3); as well as single crops. The mayze utilized was the hybrid AG1051 and the bean was Carioca CI257. Both species were sowed simultaneously and fertilized. Bean yield component factors and productivity were assessed. As for production of green mass for silage and productivity were assessed as well. In the intercrop system, the pod number per plant suffered a significant reduction in relation to the single crop. Such factor was the most important to productivity decreased. The components seed per pod number and seed weight showed no difference from single plantation. In mayze, the doubled-row sowing significantly reduced productivity. Intercrop system 3 presented higher index of area equivalency when grain and mayze silage production was concenrned.
The objective of this work was to evaluate differences between silages produced from exclusive cultures or intercropped with corn and signal grass cultures in different sowing arrangements (two lines of signal grass in the corn inter-lines and hand-sowed signal grass in the corn inter-lines) The production of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) for area was evaluated, as well as the qualitative variables of DM in the silages including CP, TDN, NDF, LIG, NFC, NH3, butyric and lactic acids and pH. The corn in exclusive culture, signal grass in two lines and hand-sowed signal grass did not differ in relation to the DM, CP and TDN production or the qualitative variables in relation to the CP, TDN, NDF, LIG, pH, NH3, butyric and lactic acid contents in the silage, showing better behavior than the signal grass exclusive culture. However, the canopy recovery in the area before harvest was faster in the two lines of signal grass in the corn inter-lines.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the chemical characteristics of the whole plant and the leaf and stem fractions of signal grass in different sowing arrangements to determine the productive performance of the corn/signal grass intercrop. The production of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) per area was evaluated, as well as the concentration of CP, digestible crude protein (CPD), neutral detergent insoluble crude protein (NDICP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), lignin (LIG) non-fiber carbohydrate (NFC) and TDN in DM and the leaf:stem ratio (L:S) at different sowing arrangements and culture age. The sowing arrangements tested were: two lines of signal grass in the corn inter-lines, hand-sowed signal grass in the corn inter-lines, one line of signal grass in the same line of corn, one line of signal grass in the corn inter-lines, exclusive signal grass and exclusive corn culture. The culture age effect was evaluated by sampling plants at 128, 141, 174 and 199 days after sowing. The largest production of DM, CPD and TDN was obtained for signal grass in exclusive culture. During the period when the corn culture shadowed the signal grass, the leaf:stem ratio of intercropped signal grass was lower than the signal grass in exclusive culture. Forages from arrangements with higher shadowing (hand-sowed signal grass and one line of signal grass at the same line of corn) were less productive and presented higher CP concentration in the DM. In general, higher concentrations of CP and lower of NDF and LIG were found in the leaf fraction in relation to the stem fraction, regardless the sowing arrangements. The intercrop did not affect the LIG, NFC and TDN concentration in the DM of the signal grass, but the age had an effect on these variables. The corn production was not affected by the intercrop or by the different arrangements.
