While numerous literary researchers, readers, authors, and philosophers have tried to articulate the peculiar feeling of intimacy they have sensed in literary reading, new angles can still be brought ...to bear on this issue. This paper develops an account of the intimacy of literary reading based on three concepts: silent performance, routine, and trust. By combining an interpretation of the history of silent reading with an understanding of literary reading as a particular kind of performance, I show, in the first part, how a focus on some internal qualities of reading helps to understand its intimate nature. Then, the picture of the intimacy of literary reading emerging from this account is complemented with a look at the role of routines in our reading lives and the sense of trust readers sometimes feel toward authors. All these aspects of literary reading contribute, in different ways, to the sense of intimacy literary reading can involve. The paper ends with a few observations on the state of this intimate, experiential sphere in an increasingly digitalized world.
Against a backdrop of conditions of precarity and the ruins of finance capitalism, this study examines the manifestations of how the relationship of friendship manages to re-invent and re-define ...itself. Moreover, it asks whether new modes of relationality, companionship, and intimacy can be cultivated and practiced given the current neoliberal conditions of living. The questions that this study attempts to open up are focused on the re-workings, reconfigurations, and re-makings of practices of sociality and intimacy between friends.
The questions of intimacy, its spatial dimensions, and its creative potential lie in the heart of this thesis. People often think of intimacy as that which is private and secret, placing it in nooks ...and quiet places that can hide, comfort and protect us. However, I argue that intimacy can take place in open spaces, within crowds and while on the move. Intimacy holds paradoxes, as it can be found not only in ideas of care and nurture, but also in risk and conflict. In the thesis I explore and reveal both aspects of intimacy, expanding how we understand it and defining its potential as a concept to tease out forms of interaction with others and the environments we inhabit. I develop a framework of thinking about and understanding the intricate character intimacy. I develop this in the meeting of the spatial relationships we encounter in the psychoanalytic theories of D.W. Winnicott and J. Lacan, as framework that can 'hold' intimacy's textures. The research progresses through a series of five workshops with multiple participants and other walking experiences at different scales. I study the concept of intimacy through and within the practice of walking and at the same time I examine 'walking with' as a site of intimacy, which forms an approach towards environments of openness in performative explorations of spaces, aiming for a study 'on' intimacy as well as 'with' intimacy. I develop this practice throughout the thesis as a mode of enquiry that foregrounds lived, embodied, and emotional experiences, critically approaching, yet directly responding to the rich and intricate relations of subjects and environments. I conclude that the concept of intimate spaces needs to broaden further to embrace intimacy's nuances, allowing us to address as such the relationship between public and private spaces not as exclusive opposites, but as a concept that enables us to identify points of overlap, intersection, and leakiness. In such ways, we can identify interior qualities in the public space (or identify the need for), and at the same time invite public elements in 'controlled' private spaces. I also suggest that research on and with intimacy through performative explorations, such as the practice of 'walking with', can provide playful and enquiring modes of exploring spaces by suggesting new forms of engagement and ideas of participation. Such practices can facilitate creative collaborations, provide communication beyond conventional boundaries and offer an understanding of space through embodied occasions, events and actions.
This article is a redevelopment of my previous studies, characterizing the media genre of – and community building through – transgender video blogging. Focusing on one of the most famous video ...bloggers at the moment, the Canadian Julie Van Vu, I investigate new forms of transgender vlogging that embrace money making/self-commodification in a degree not seen before. Here, activism/advocacy co-exists with and goes through an explicit self-commodification. Drawing on existing research, I explore the mechanisms and characteristics of Vu as a micro-celebrity within YouTube as a platform. I suggest the concept of ‘subcultural microcelebrity’ to nuance, diversify and specify micro-celebrity as a concept and a practice. The article departs from – but also redevelops – the concept and characteristics of micro-celebrity to specify the ‘affective labour’. Micro-celebrities are expected to perform various kinds of labour, many of which are time and energy consuming but not necessarily economically profitable. Micro-celebrities must signal accessibility, availability, presence, and connectedness – and maybe most importantly authenticity – all of which presuppose and rely on some form of intimacy. I propose that intimacy as genre and as capital is deeply ingrained in the strategies, dynamics and affective labour of micro-celebrities. Intimacy is an important and necessary signifier in relation to both the form and content of the videos and the relation between the creators and their audience. Furthermore, intimacy works as an important currency within social media; thus, intimacy can be capitalized in manifold and intersecting ways, for example, for monetary purposes, social recognition and as a tool in advocacy work. The article hereby contributes to existing research on YouTube by redeveloping the concept of micro-celebrity in relation to affective labour and intimacy, analysing how these play out in new forms of transgender vlogging.
This essay analyzes how race politics and immigration politics intersect in present-day Morocco, entangling various actors across multiple scales, from the continental to the interpersonal. While ...often problematic, we suggest that externalization can provide a lens through which to trace the production and circulation of race in the Morocco-EU borderlands and to chart the uneasy proximities that emerge among states, migrants and “civil society,” and racialized outsiders and insiders. And while numerous studies analyze the geopolitical and economic dimensions of the externalized border, how externalization reworks racial-social categories of belonging in “partner” or “third” states like Morocco is less known. Drawing on ethnography and interviews, we argue that externalization is a useful analytical category for understanding transnational border projects as racial projects that operate beyond the domain of citizenship or the state, reworking categories of belonging and exclusion from the scale of the body to the global scale. The Morocco-EU borderlands constitute a “contact zone” where multiple peoples, institutions, processes, and histories interact to produce blackness as out-of-place, changing the way that Moroccans understand race, place, and membership. The mobilization of race in the Morocco-EU border impacts the lives and movements of West and Central African migrants, but may also compound the exclusions of racialized Moroccans at home and in Europe.
This study investigates (a) heterogeneous trajectories of couple intimacy over the mid‐later years (average ages of 40–65) and (b) how these intimacy classes are differentially associated with ...spouses’ midlife financial strain as well as their later‐life health and wellbeing outcomes. The sample was comprised of white couples in long‐term marriages from the rural Mid‐west who experienced the economic downturn of the farm crisis in late 1980s. Couple‐level measures of emotional intimacy and sexual intimacy were created by summing husbands’ and wives’ reports. Using growth mixture modeling with a sample of 304 couples, conjoint intimacy classes were identified from trajectories of couple emotional intimacy and sexual intimacy. Three qualitatively different latent intimacy classes of couples were identified: Consistently High, Moderate and Increasing, and Chronically Low. Intimacy classes were differentially associated with midlife financial strain and later‐life health and wellbeing. Spouses with consistently high and moderate and increasing intimacy in their mid‐later years averaged lower financial strain in early midlife and better health and wellbeing outcomes in later years (>67 years) compared to those with consistently low intimacy after controlling for lagged health measures. The identification of couple intimacy trajectory groups provides a potentially useful prognostic tool for counseling efforts that can promote and develop resiliency factors to aid in the redirection of adverse couple intimacy trajectories.

En el presente estudio se investigan las a) trayectorias heterogéneas de la intimidad de la pareja durante los años de la mediana edad y la vejez (edades promedio de 40 a 65 años) y b) cómo estas clases de intimidad se asocian diferencialmente con la presión económica de la mediana edad de los cónyuges, así como con los resultados en la salud y el bienestar en la vejez. La muestra estuvo compuesta de parejas blancas en matrimonios duraderos de zonas rurales del centro de los Estados Unidos que sufrieron la recesión económica de la crisis agrícola a fines de la década de los ochenta. Las medidas a nivel de la pareja de la intimidad emocional y la intimidad sexual se crearon sumando los informes de los esposos y las esposas. Utilizando un modelo de combinación de crecimiento con una muestra de 304 parejas, se identificaron clases de intimidad conjunta a partir de las trayectorias de la intimidad emocional y la intimidad sexual de la pareja. Se identificaron tres clases de parejas cualitativamente diferentes según su intimidad latente: constantemente alta, moderada y en aumento, y crónicamente baja. Las clases de intimidad estuvieron asociadas diferencialmente con la presión económica en la mediana edad y la salud y el bienestar en la vejez. Los cónyuges con intimidad constantemente alta, y moderada y en aumento entre la mediana edad y la vejez promediaron una menor presión económica a principios de la mediana edad y mejores resultados en la salud y el bienestar durante la vejez (más de 67 años) en comparación con aquellos que tenían una intimidad constantemente baja después de tener en cuenta las medidas de salud retardadas. The most-performed operas today were written at least a hundred years ago and carry some outdated and deeply problematic ideas. When performed uncritically, the misogyny, racism, and other ideologies ...present in many of these works clash with modern sensibilities. In Rape at the Opera, Margaret Cormier argues that production and performance are vital elements of opera, and that contemporary opera practitioners not only interpret but create operatic works when they put them onstage. Where some directors explicitly respond to contemporary dialogues about sexual violence, others utilize sexual violence as a surefire way to titillate, to shock, and to generate press for a new production. Drawing on archival footage as well as attendance at live events, Cormier analyzes productions of canonic operas from German, Italian, and French traditions from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century, including Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Don Giovanni, La forza del destino, Un ballo in maschera, Salome, and Turandot. In doing so, Cormier highlights the dynamism of twenty-first-century opera performance practice with regard to sexual violence, establishes methods to evaluate representations of sexual violence on the opera stage, and reframes the primary responsibility of opera critics and creators as being not to opera composers and librettists but to the public.

Things are changing. Consent and factors that complicate consent are finally being recognized as central, foundational considerations in production ...processes and in performing arts education. People are beginning to think critically about how they approach intimacies in the rehearsal room, in the classroom, on set, in theory, in practice, and in pedagogy. As theatres and producing organizations hire more and more intimacy professionals, we need to meet the educational, resource, partnership, and access needs of this growing, learning community.
And no one organization, school of thought, or individual has all of the answers.
We need this community’s knowledge, big ideas, and resources to be accessible in order for the field of consent-based performance to grow.
We need to work together to learn from--and to teach--one another to pause, interrogate what we’re doing, and then create more equitable and competent consent-based practices. As a collective, we need to recognize the value of the work that has come before us and the work our peers are doing now, and consciously recommit ourselves to growing, learning, and doing better now and in the future.
