Although much of the care of Alzheimer disease (AD) patients and their families is carried out by health professionals who are not specialists in AD or geriatrics, little is known about how ...knowledgeable these health professionals are about AD. An AD knowledge test was constructed through careful instrument development procedures and then administered through a mail survey. Subjects were 693 individuals, including experts in AD care, generalist health care professionals (primary care physicians, psychologists, social workers, and nurses), nursing students, hospital staff nurses, and assorted health professionals. A 12-item scale with excellent psychometric properties was developed. Experts in AD care performed significantly better than generalist health care professionals on all items. All four groups of generalist health care professionals showed important deficits in fundamental knowledge about AD; for example, only 40% of generalists (vs. 97% of experts) knew that AD is the most common cause of severe memory loss in people over age 65. Results suggest that, although knowledge about assessment and management of AD has increased and has been widely disseminated, many health care professionals remain uninformed about AD. Suggestions for professional education and for use of the UAB AD Knowledge Test for Health Professionals are discussed.
The paper contains a list of school and student contests in computer science and programming with a brief description, which have been held by Novosibirsk State University (NSU) for the last 20 ...years. The practice of using the automated system NSUts for checking programming tasks in the educational process and in programming contests at various levels is considered.
The existing open-source object-oriented systems that can be used as an environment to upload and to store information-educational resources for distance learning (open-source LMS\LCMS: ATutor, ...Claroline, Dokeos, Sakai, and Moodle), are analyzed. The use of Moodle (a Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) as the environment for the learning portal of the Mendeleyev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (

) is justified. The capabilities of Moodle with regard to the development of information-educational resources are explored and educational materials are elaborated for a course of study, viz., “Protection of Intellectual Property,” e.g., theoretical materials, seminar and colloquia exercises, tests for interim and final control of student’s knowledge level, as well as the elements of a learning process management system for a course of study.
The questions of application of training computer simulators for training of future specialists-power engineers in higher education institution are considered. Examples of specific research problems ...solved with the help of all-mode simulators are given. The attention is paid to methodical approaches of students training at use in educational process of computer training complexes, and also to their features of technical realization.
We assessed knowledge about Alzheimer's disease (AD) in a sample of Italian general practitioners (GPs). We first carried out a propedeutic study to verify the ability of an Italian version of the ...University of Alabama at Birmingham's AD Knowledge Test for Health Professionals to distinguish between 20 AD specialists and 20 non-specialists and to gain reference values. We then administered the test, together with a short questionnaire, to 139 GPs attending an educational programme in November 2000. The cut-off score for discriminating specialists from non-specialists was >/=9. Among the 95 GPs who performed the AD Knowledge Test (68.3% response rate), 21% had a total score >/=9. Our findings suggest that particular focus should be given to dementia in continuing medical education (CME) programmes for GPs.
The Department of Information Systems at the Corvinus University of Budapest as the leading member of the HEFOP e-learning project is developing an adaptive knowledge test system. The system, which ...is supported by an educational ontology, tries to measure the knowledge of the examinees in a more objective way then the regular paper and pencil approaches. This article provides a brief description about the modules and the processes of the system, also discussing the emerging challenges during the development

ABSTRACT
HPT practitioners have found knowledge management concepts a useful way of thinking about information “root causes” in analyzing performance deficits. Nonaka and Konno (1998) have offered ...their theory of “ba,” or “space,” suggesting that particular environments facilitate the “conversion” of particular types of knowledge. Constructing environments where particular forms of knowledge are transferred among groups of individuals is naturally appealing as it offers the HPT consultant the opportunity to create interventions to disseminate social or group understandings. In this study we argue that the validity of the theory needs to be tested in natural settings in order to give credence to its utility and bring more precision to the prescriptions. This study focuses on the conversion of tacit knowledge to explicit knowledge, or “interacting ba.” Three corporate groups were observed as they collaborated to develop instructional, Web‐based stories intended to capture their tacit organizational understandings. The investigators used a comparative case study method to investigate three design retreats. A reasonable level of support was created for the theory.
In the sphere of distance learning, computer-aided knowledge testing (CAKT) is widely used. The state of affairs in the field of CAKT systems is analyzed in this paper. It is shown that widespread ..."elective" tests have a number of essential disadvantages. The authors offer an approach permitting one to use natural language processing as one of the major CAKT components. The main idea of the approach consists in high-tech matching of a student's answer with the answer template given by the instructor. In addition, text information obtained from electronic textbooks and books on the course and transformed into a semantic network can be used when evaluating students' work. Necessary methods and algorithms were designed. The authors also offer software implementing the methods developed. This software can be built as a subsystem into electronic textbooks, electronic courses and other CAKT systems. The results obtained allow one to believe in appropriateness of the approach for actual usage.
