Welcome to the inaugural volume of IWPSALC. In creating this publication—inspired by progress reports like those published from 1965 through 1995 as the Haskins Laboratories Status Report on Speech ...Research—we seek to encourage scholars to publish discrete portions of their research while they work towards full papers. The papers included herein are a small sampling of the work that began in Spring 2018, work which will be presented at future conferences, be expanded for other publications, and serve as the basis for future dissertations. Since much of the research is still ongoing, in a sense this volume provides a sneak peek at things yet to come. Topics touched on range from the phonetic to the syntactic to the descriptive. Thank you for picking up this volume and showing interest. We hope the contents are of interest and we look forward to future conversations.
Beginning by noting the lack of precision between what is cultural appropriation and cultural borrowing, the author turns to similarly imprecise distinctions regarding linguistic appropriation. ...Specifically considered are imprecise, from a Marxian lens, accounts of linguistic appropriation and dispossession. The author fleshes out the Marxian roots of appropriation and accumulation by dispossession, tracing the latter back to Marx’s primitive accumulation. It is argued that neither appropriation or dispossession of language can follow from a Marxian lens.
•There is a need for more precise distinctions between cultural and linguistic appropriation and borrowing.•Understanding language and culture as commodities is not theoretical consistent from a Marxian lens.•Language cannot rightly be said to be subject to appropriation or dispossession since both notions rely on understanding language as a commodity.

Russian and Slavic studies are included into the interdisciplinary context to create the matrix of the Absolute based on the correlation between linguistic and extralinguistic structural elements.
The present study examined heritage culture influences on the roles of adult and child in the conversations Latina immigrant mothers in the United States have with their young children. Spanish ...monolingual Latina mothers (n = 17), Spanish-English bilingual Latina mothers (n = 30), and English monolingual European American mothers (n = 22) were recorded in toy play interaction with their 2.5-year-old children; the bilingual Latina mothers were recorded twice, once interacting in Spanish and once in English. Analyses of transcripts of those conversations revealed that the monolingual Spanish-speaking Latina mothers talked more and asked fewer questions of their children and their children talked less compared with the monolingual English-speaking European American mothers and their children, consistent with differences that have been observed between mothers in Latin America and in the United States. The Spanish and English conversations between the bilingual mothers and their children similarly differed in the ratio of adult to child speech, although the Latina mothers’ English conversations still differed from the English conversations of European American mothers. In addition, the ratio of mother to child speech in the immigrant mothers’ Spanish language conversations declined as their years of U.S. residence increased. These findings argue that children of Latina immigrant mothers in the United States are socialized to talk less (and listen more) in conversation with adults compared with children from European American families. These findings also provide new evidence for cultural frames as the mediators of cultural influences on behavior and for language priming of cultural frames.
Employing national identity theories and survey data in Taiwan, this article explains national identity shift in Taiwan. Descriptively we find that most Taiwanese people reject being called 'Chinese' ...(zhongguoren) when asked about their national identity. However, they do not deny their ethnic and cultural Chinese identity. What they object to is being called Chinese nationals, especially this China which is internationally recognized as the People's Republic of China. In other words, most Taiwanese people do not identify themselves with the mainland Chinese state even though they still associate themselves with the Chinese nation. It is also noted that there is no consensus with regard to national identity in Taiwan, since close to one third of the population still do not object to be called zhongguoren. The author's analytical findings further confirm that external sovereignty-related factors are related to the Taiwanese national identity shift. Specifically, a changed state boundary, separation desire from mainland China, and recognition of Taiwan as a sovereign state, not the distinctive cultural reconstruction inside Taiwan, contribute to the national identity shift in Taiwan.
This study is situated in the field of the pragmatics of fiction and audio-visual translation studies and explores renditions of relational work and im/politeness in the English fan subtitles of ...Korean dramas, as provided by the platform www.viki.com (Dwyer, 2012, 2017; Locher & Messerli, 2020). Within story lines, the indexical potential of language is used (among others) for character positioning, character development, relationship development and (indirectly) reflection of cultural norms and expectations (Planchenault, 2017). Fictional data is thus an ideal source for studying linguistic ideologies about relational work. The case of Korean is challenging for subtitlers since it dynamically indexes relationships through a complex system of grammaticalized politeness forms and a set of honorific morphemes and vocabulary (see, e.g., Rhee, 2019). The Korean nuances often cannot be translated as there is no straightforward correspondence to indexes of politeness in the target languages. Nevertheless, the English subtitles give access to an abundance of foregrounded relational work moments. The paper works on 215 scenes (from 4 dramas) and explores in what ways the complex Korean politeness system and the fictional play with this system is made accessible in the subtitles for non-Korean audiences. Four themes emerged: (1) character address term negotiations; (2) character meta-comments on relational work; (3) character meta-discussions on role understanding; and (4) subtitler meta-comments on language and culture. The results demonstrate two main issues: (a) these relational work moments are intricately connected with (character) identity construction in the fictional artefact; (b) the subtitlers take an active role in translating cultural assumptions about relational work and lean towards foreignization rather than domestication.
•Computer-mediated streaming platforms make possible fan translation of TV series.•Lay translators show acute awareness of the pragmatic challenges of translating relational work in Korean.•Lay translators use meta-comments to make the artefacts accessible to the international audience.•Lay translators often retain the use of some Korean address terms and idioms as borrowings.•Lay subtitlers create an in-group of K-drama fans with the viewers.
In this article we reflect on a theatre production about World War I staged by university studentsof German in Melbourne, Australia. The project was conceptualised by German language program ...academicsand postgraduate students. The project explored WWI using German cultural and historical primary sources.We find that students perceived a range of benefits as individuals and learners of German as a foreign language and culture through their participation in the project. In terms of improved understanding of Germanhistory, we argue that taking on a foreign – German – perspective allowed for the acquisition of nuancedhistorical and cultural knowledge.
The discussion about linguistic universals, initiated over 50 years ago by J. Greenberg, remains a topic of significant interest today. While there’s an ongoing debate on the universality of ...linguistic forms - with some supporting the notion and others dismissing it as baseless—the idea of a unifying linguistic essence stands firm. The article aims to explore the linguacultural values of language, particularly how they enable the reconstruction of ideas and stereotypes within specific segments of a language system. The research found that universal language characteristics serve as a rich source of information for those studying linguacultural aspects. These traits offer nationally determined interpretations of words, drawing from associations rooted in either tangible or cultural codes. When delving into cultural codes present within every culture, the study discerned the presence of basic and universal codes. The existence of these codes provides insights into the formation of stereotypes, which encapsulate the experiences and knowledge intrinsic to the bearers of a culture. Linguistic universals, underpinned by universal grammar and semantic foundations, occupy a central position in linguacultural examinations, especially when reconstructing cultural ideas and stereotypes. Basic and universal cultural codes inherent in each culture facilitate the creation of linguistic worldviews.
