Library education is changing. At a time when librarianship is increasingly seen as part of the information industry, Library and Information Science is also searching for its place in a new and ...rapidly developing university landscape.
This book analyzes the development of the contemporary university in light of present critical social theory, focusing on such aspects as academic acceleration, organizational accretion and the rise of an ”entrepreneurial spirit,” all of which have both epistemological and organizational consequences. Library and Information Science has proven well-suited to meet this development. One way has been through the rapid international growth of the iSchool movement, now counting close to a hundred member schools all across the world. iSchools not only meet the requirements of contemporary university development, but also contribute to a recontextualization of librarianship and library education. As the iSchool movement relates to a view of information as a commodity and the ”iField” to increased economic growth, it recontextualizes the library sector, traditionally connected to democratic development based on the ideas of the Enlightenment.
Educating librarians in the Contemporary University is written from a European perspective, and examples such as the EU research platform, Horizon 2020, Government Research Proposals, and policy documents from European iSchools are used in an attempt to understand the current development in Library and Information Science and its relevance for librarianship. As the European Research and Development Sector increasingly connects universities to the solution of various ”social challenges” with emphasis on commercial collaborations, the view on knowledge and use of university resources are affected in a way which seemingly make critical analyses difficult.
Questions are asked about the relation between iSchools, late capitalism and the development of Critical Librarianship. Is there a way of fulfilling the ambitions of the critical theory classics and achieve research and an education environment which encourage emancipatory goals within the iSchool movement?
This study aims to investigate the factors influencing non-enrollment in LIS programs among university students. A survey was administered to 537 students to assess their opinions on librarians, ...reasons for not pursuing library and information science programs, and perspectives on the importance of university libraries. Results indicate highly favorable perceptions of librarians as knowledgeable, approachable professionals who relate well with people. The primary deterrents from enrolling in library science were a lack of personal interest/ambition rather than negative views of the program itself. Students overwhelmingly agreed that libraries are vital resources within universities, strongly supporting increased funding, technological enhancements and that online resources could not fully replace physical libraries. This study provides timely insights into students' multi-faceted perceptions of librarians' roles, the library science discipline, and the evolving position of university libraries amidst technological shifts. The results can inform strategies for optimizing library services and attracting future professionals to the field.
Abstract
Libraries are charged with being inclusive spaces for all patrons. Library (library and information science LIS) preparation programs, by extension, must prepare the next generation of ...librarians to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population. It is imperative that today’s librarians are equipped to infuse diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) theory with best practice when establishing policy and procedure for the library environment, staff, and programing. With little research and no established protocol in LIS education, it is unclear how pre-service librarians are trained in DEI to meet the needs of all users. This exploratory study used a participatory action research model to examine how a library educator-researcher might begin to develop a framework centered on cultural competence and implement it with one class of emerging librarians to explore issues impacting racial DEI in library services. Findings suggest that the framework provided a structure by which the LIS students could interrogate their own bias, gain greater empathy toward understanding DEI and racial issues, and begin to shift their beliefs toward creating a culturally responsive library setting.

The article analyzes the educational activities of the presidential libraries in the countries of the world, in particular the USA, the countries of Europe and the CIS. The best practices of using ...documentary resources of presidential collections to improve the educational process and promote historical knowledge and upbringing of patriotism and respect for state institutions, etc., are given. The scientific novelty of the paper is to highlight different approaches to the organization of promotion of the documentary heritage of presidential power through integration into the educational process.The educational activities of the presidential libraries and museums in the countries of the world are aimed at opening their own documentary archives and promoting the personality of the founding president, but also at forming in the youth respect for history and state institutions. The author considers the experience of applying the latest technologies in the educational process through the cooperation of presidential libraries and museums with educational institutions. Presidential libraries in the USA have the greatest experience and ability to apply modern information technologies. After all, having unique resources and sometimes sufficient financial resources, they can influence the interest of citizens in its history from school studios. But presidential libraries in other countries also integrate into the teaching and educational process and involve school and university teachers in collaborative projects that are implemented both in the library and on the Web. Since refining knowledge and applying absorption techniques to historical events by playing or reconstructing certain events is of interest to the younger generation and enhances the absorption of historical and political science materials.
Law librarianship is a constantly evolving profession driven by the evolution of law practice, legal education, government, and law itself. Changes in these drivers are in turn influenced by factors ...such as technology, culture, client needs, American Bar Association Standards, bar exams, diversity and access efforts, faculty research, instructional trends, and law school rankings. Law librarians proudly keep up with these changes-and even stay ahead of them-as we impart new knowledge and skills to users of law libraries and legal information resources. As we proceed through the third decade of the twenty-first century, the legal information profession is engaged in dialogue about the perpetually shrinking pools of qualified candidates for law librarian positions. Additionally, law librarians have been lamenting for decades that the legal information profession does not accurately reflect the diversity in our communities. The literature reflects that those conversations began in earnest in the 1970s and continue today. This article addresses both compelling issues and offers concrete strategies to tackle them simultaneously, thoughtfully, and intentionally. The entire profession is invited to play a role in this effort.
The paper presents study of older persons’ needs and the role and capabilities of library resources in serving this category of users, based on the analysis of the demographic situation in Ukraine. ...The newest forms and methods in the work of book collections that contribute to the social integration of the elderly, the improvement of their legal education, the maintenance of the intellectual level, etc., are considered. The article emphasizes that the issue of the role of libraries in ensuring the social integration of the elderly persons in Ukraine should be considered in the general context of the relevant state policy and social guidelines. Thematic recommendations of M. V. Ptuha Institute for Demography and Social Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, were developed jointly with the United Nations Population Fund. From the point of view of library practice, the directions recommended by demographers are highlighted, including: encouraging the elderly to participate in educational programs, as well as diversifying disciplines and courses, developing (or adapting) educational programs for different age groups, taking into account the age-specific features of the mental and physiological development of the elderly persons, increasing the access of senior citizens to the latest technologies with appropriate training, prevention of discrimination and cruel treatment of the elderly in all spheres of life, etc. The article emphasizes that a significant part of what is recommended, is implemented already in the work of regional and local libraries, because, promptly responding to the needs of the community, they closely cooperate with social services, contribute to the implementation of state, regional and local programs for older persons. Specific examples of new approaches and priorities in the organization of service for users of this age category are given, which allows us to conclude about the desire of library workers to create the most comfortable conditions for persons in retire to satisfy their reading requests, support their intellectual level, social integration, etc. And the rapid development of information technologies promotes innovative transformations in the work of libraries.
