A total of 119 taxa, belonging to 23 different genera were recorded from 34 terrestrial moss samples in Northeast Greenland. The diatom flora is mainly composed of cosmopolitan taxa. The taxa with an ...arctic and/or alpine distribution constitute 32% of the total number of taxa observed, but constitute only 16% to the relative abundance. The mean number of diatom valves/g dried sample is 697.000±487.000. Most important genera are Eunotia, Nitzschia and Pinnularia. Three assemblages are distinguished by a hierarchic-agglomerate cluster analysis and confirmed by a PCA-ordination. The Pinnularia obscura assemblage lives in the drier mosses. The distinction between the other two assemblages, the Fragilaria pinnata assemblage and the Eunotia fallax assemblage, is possibly due to differences in pH.
