This paper provides some reasons for the slow development of shared manufacturing in China. The concept, research status, and significance of shared manufacturing are introduced. The paper first ...gives the sharing mode of China’s sharing manufacturing platform and basic organizational architecture of manufacturing capacity sharing. The remarkable characteristics of sharing manufacturing are presented in many different ways, especially sharing content. The main sharing content in manufacturing is then analyzed and classified in detail through examples. The differences between traditional sharing manufacturing and modern sharing manufacturing were compared and analyzed, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of Chinese sharing manufacturing compared with foreign sharing manufacturing. The detailed sharing process of distributed maintenance management platform was given and gained a good effect. Finally, the methods to improve the efficiency of shared manufacturing are presented, which help to understand the shared manufacturing in the manufacturing industry in China currently.
In most supply chains, the application of additive manufacturing (AM) is still far from common. However, various industries ranging from aerospace to consumer goods are investigating its potential to ...enable the digital value chain. Considering these developments, the research community has supported the adoption of AM in supply chains in many ways. This article contributes to the scientific discourse by systematically reviewing relevant literature depending on industry sector, purpose and supply chain area following the SCOR framework to allow fast access to essential information. The review encompasses 1004 articles, where 141 were subjected to a full-text analysis with argument-specific coding. Findings revealed the predominant AM trends for supply chains, perceived benefits and challenges, and possible applications. Managerial implications based on an overview of (envisioned) applications of AM in different industries are outlined. Additionally, based on a qualitative analysis, gaps in the literature and future lines of research were identified.
Additive manufacturing (AM) is still underutilized as an industrial process, but is quickly gaining momentum with the development of innovative techniques and materials for various applications. In ...particular, stereolithography (SLA) is now shifting from rapid prototyping to rapid manufacturing, but is facing challenges in parts performance and printing speed, among others. This review discusses the application of SLA for polymer nanocomposites fabrication to show the technology's potential in increasing the applicability of current SLA‐printed parts. Photopolymerization chemistry, nanocomposite preparation, and applications in various industries are also explained to provide a comprehensive picture of the current and future capabilities of the technique and materials involved.
Stereolithography as a 3D printing technique for fabricating polymer nanocomposites is reviewed. Focus is given on variations of the technique, material preparation prior to printing, chemistry during printing, and current and potential applications of the technology.
Electron beam melting (EBM) and Selective Laser Melting (SLM) are powder bed based additive manufacturing (AM) processes. These, relatively new, processes offer advantages such as near net shaping, ...manufacturing complex geometries with a design space that was previously not accessible with conventional manufacturing processes, part consolidation to reduce number of assemblies, shorter time to market etc. The aerospace and gas turbine industries have shown interest in the EBM and the SLM processes to enable topology-optimized designs, parts with lattice structures and part consolidation. However, to realize such advantages, factors affecting the mechanical properties must be well understood – especially the fatigue properties. In the context of fatigue performance, apart from the effect of different phases in the material, the effect of defects in terms of both the amount and distribution and the effect of “rough” as-built surface must be studied in detail. Fatigue properties of Alloy 718, a Ni-Fe based superalloy widely used in the aerospace engines is investigated in this study. Four point bending fatigue tests have been performed at 20 Hz in room temperature at different stress ranges to compare the performance of the EBM and the SLM material to the wrought material. The experiment aims to assess the differences in fatigue properties between the two powder bed AM processes as well as assess the effect of two post-treatment methods namely – machining and hot isostatic pressing (HIP). Fractography and metallography have been performed to explain the observed properties. Both HIPing and machining improve the fatigue performance; however, a large scatter is observed for machined specimens. Fatigue properties of SLM material approach that of wrought material while in EBM material defects severely affect the fatigue life.
Purpose
During design of reconfigurable manufacturing systems, manufacturing companies need to select and implement the right enablers of reconfigurability in accordance with the specific ...requirements being present in the manufacturing setting. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate enablers of reconfigurability in terms of their importance in industry, current level of implementation in industry, and significant differences in their implementation and criticality across different manufacturing settings.
Design/methodology/approach
A questionnaire survey is conducted, in order to provide generalizable empirical evidence across various industries and manufacturing types.
Findings
The findings indicate that the level of implementation of the reconfigurability enablers is rudimentary, while their criticality is perceived higher than the current level of implementation. Moreover, significant differences regarding implementation and criticality of mobility, scalability, and convertibility were found for companies with varying degrees of manual work, make-to-stock production, and varying production volume, industry type and organization size.
Research limitations/implications
Main limitations of the research cover the relatively small sample size and non-random sampling method applied, primarily limited to one country, which could be increased to further extent the findings reported in this paper.
Practical implications
The findings indicate that the importance and implementation of reconfigurability enablers is contingent on the manufacturing setting. Thus, the research presented in this paper provides valuable knowledge in regard to aiding a paradigm shift in industry and help companies design manufacturing systems with the right reconfigurability enablers.
Originality/value
This paper expands research on manufacturing system design for changeability and reconfigurability, by explicitly considering these as capabilities that can be enabled in various ways for various purposes in different manufacturing contexts.
Size effects (SEs) exist in many domains, and are caused by changes in the values of parameters of materials, structures, or systems individually or collectively known as size effect factors. SEs ...induce a variety of scale-dependent behaviours, phenomena, and performances during the multiscale processing and manufacturing of materials, such as the macro-, meso-, and microscale ones examined by the researches described in this paper. Furthermore, the parts and components fabricated from multiscale processing and manufacturing exhibit the scatters of quality and properties. This paper uses multiscale machining and deformation-based manufacturing as the case studies of material processing and manufacturing to review and analyse SEs and their manifestations. The current status of multiscale manufacturing research and its possible future avenues are articulated and discussed, and key problems that must be solved and unknowns that must be understood are highlighted. This paper thus presents a broad understanding and insight into SEs that influence the material processing and manufacturing for making multiscale parts and components. It also examines the bottleneck problems generated by SEs in such processing and manufacturing arena, and how these can be solved to enable the high efficiencies of multi-scale materials processing and manufacturing to be realised.

This works presents a methodology, along with its software implementation called “Design 2 Cost”, for evaluating the manufacturing cost and complexity of a part built by a subtractive (e.g. milling) ...or additive (e.g. laser metal deposition, Selective laser melting, wire-arc additive manufacturing) process. The overall manufacturing complexity is calculated as a weighted average of morphological and material criteria, which are defined either locally or globally. The local morphological criteria are calculated over the leaf nodes of an octree representation of the part using a raycasting technique. This allows to efficiently probe the local geometry of the part and compare it with manufacturing constraints emanating from the manufacturing process and its associated effector. This algorithm yields a cartography of the local complexity criteria that helps visualizing the problematic regions for the processes under consideration. The software is accompanied by a database that feeds the required material and process properties needed for the calculation of the manufacturing complexity and cost. The proposed methodology therefore permits a technical and economic comparison of manufacturing processes for a given geometry and material, as well as a comparison of various part geometries and materials for a given manufacturing process.
This paper proposes a multi-objective hybrid artificial bee colony (MOHABC) algorithm for service composition and optimal selection (SCOS) in cloud manufacturing, in which both the quality of service ...and the energy consumption are considered from the perspectives of economy and environment that are two pillars of sustainable manufacturing. The MOHABC uses the concept of Pareto dominance to direct the searching of a bee swarm, and maintains non-dominated solution found in an external archive. In order to achieve good distribution of solutions along the Pareto front, cuckoo search with Levy flight is introduced in the employed bee search to maintain diversity of population. Furthermore, to ensure the balance of exploitation and exploration capabilities for MOHABC, the comprehensive learning strategy is designed in the onlooker search so that every bee learns from the external archive elite, itself and other onlookers. Experiments are carried out to verify the effect of the improvement strategies and parameters' impacts on the proposed algorithm and comparative study of the MOHABC with typical multi-objective algorithms for SCOS problems are addressed. The results show that the proposed approach obtains very promising solutions that significantly surpass the other considered algorithms.
