The 2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition was the largest international tourism event hosted in Taiwan. Hosting governments aim to improve the well-being of residents and gain their support by hosting ...megaevents. However, few studies have examined the mediating role of subjective well-being by surveying the same group of residents before and after a megaevent. On the basis of social exchange and stakeholder theories, this study investigated the effect of residents' perceived benefits and costs on subjective well-being and support for megaevents. Furthermore, changes in the perceptions and attitudes of residents before and after the event were assessed. Pre-event and postevent questionnaires were collected from 262 residents. The findings indicated that the effects of social benefits on subjective well-being were strengthened and the effect of social cost on subjective well-being was weakened as the event progressed. Moreover, subjective well-being mediated the relationship between perceived benefits and support for megaevents. This research extends current knowledge on event tourism and revealed changes in resident perceptions and attitudes before and after a megaevent. These findings could help governments and destination managers host megaevents and promote tourism development.
The Olympic Games are the largest, highest-profile, and most expensive megaevent hosted by cities and nations. Average sports-related costs of hosting are $12.0 billion. Non-sports-related costs are ...typically several times that. Every Olympics since 1960 has run over budget, at an average of 172 percent in real terms, the highest overrun on record for any type of megaproject. The paper tests theoretical statistical distributions against empirical data for the costs of the Games, in order to explain the cost risks faced by host cities and nations. It is documented, for the first time, that cost and cost overrun for the Games follow a power-law distribution. Olympic costs are subject to infinite mean and variance, with dire consequences for predictability and planning. We name this phenomenon "regression to the tail": it is only a matter of time until a new extreme event occurs, with an overrun larger than the largest so far, and thus more disruptive and less plannable. The generative mechanism for the Olympic power law is identified as strong convexity prompted by six causal drivers: irreversibility, fixed deadlines, the Blank Check Syndrome, tight coupling, long planning horizons, and an Eternal Beginner Syndrome. The power law explains why the Games are so difficult to plan and manage successfully, and why cities and nations should think twice before hosting. Based on the power law, two heuristics are identified for better decision making on hosting. Finally, the paper develops measures for good practice in planning and managing the Games, including how to mitigate the extreme risks of the Olympic power law.
Host cities have shown the intention of using the Olympic Games as a leverageable resource in achieving sustained volunteering among Olympic volunteers. I examined the relationship between the ...perceived benefits of Olympic volunteering and sustained volunteer behavior years after the
megaevent. Participants were 353 volunteers who had been involved with the Beijing 2008, Singapore 2010, or Nanjing 2014 Games. The results of an online survey reveal that perceived benefits directly influenced sustained volunteering. A critical relationship between the development of volunteers'
role identity and volunteering afterwards was confirmed. Perceived benefits were positively associated with role identity and, thus, indirectly promoted sustained volunteering behavior. Hence, perceived benefits arising from Olympic volunteering are the key to volunteer identity and sustained
volunteering. For future practice, significant efforts are needed in the development of perceived benefits and role identity as a volunteer via individuals' experience of volunteering at sporting megaevents.
Objective: The World Youth Day (the WYD) with about 3 million Catholics from all over the world participating directly in a single place and time is one of the biggest and most spectacular projects ...organized on regular basis by the Catholic Church since more than 30 years ago. From the perspective of management sciences, we presented the WYD as an example of a very large organisational event which requires the people who execute it to display managerial skills adequate for managing megaevents. The research problem that we pondered concerns what made the WYD, as a particular type of project – a large-scale religious event - successful. Methodology: We conducted an in-depth analysis of the literature and the study of the organisation and execution of the World Youth Day held in Cracow in between 25 and 31 July 2016.The combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods was selected: desk research analysis, in-depth individual interviews and partly categorised quantitative interviews. Findings: The results of the research indicate that particularly inspiring for the management practice is, among others, an exceptional ability to involve and motivate project’s stakeholders and special purpose entities which the organisers of the Cracow WYD displayed. Value Added: In our considerations, we point out the specific type of a project – a global eventof a religious nature – that according to our knowledge was not a subject of research in the fieldof management studies and thus we fill out the existing research gap. Recommendations: The exploratory character of the study may inspire further research intothe success factors of soft megaprojects and in particular those of religious nature.

In preparation for Pope Francis's visit to Philadelphia and the 2015 World Meeting of Families, organizers looked for thousands of volunteers to help carry out these events. This is common for many ...one‐time and episodic events, such as large sporting events (from marathons to Special Olympics), arts and cultural events (such as festivals and concerts), and fundraising events. After the pope's visit, volunteers were asked to respond to a questionnaire about their experiences and the volunteer management of the event; 2,408 responded (34.4 percent). Data on motivation, who volunteered, recruitment, training, assignment, supervision, communication, satisfaction, and suggestions for improvement were elicited. We focused on episodic volunteering at a religious event and on a broad spectrum of issues pertaining to management of episodic volunteers. Our findings add to the knowledge regarding volunteer management and also add to conceptual understanding of the distinction between ongoing and episodic volunteers.

This article reflects on the position of the game of cricket in the development of sport as an emergent feature of 21st-century capitalist consumer culture. Its focus is on the International Cricket ...Council Cricket World Cup West Indies 2007 (CWC 2007). It suggests that detailed analysis of sports megaevents, such as the cricket and association football World Cup competitions and the Summer Olympics, enables consideration of several overlapping and intersecting issues of contemporary social scientific interest. Consideration of the CWC 2007 staged in the Caribbean reveals several of the underlying tensions that emerge when a sports megaevent is staged outside the advanced urban centers of the northern hemisphere, exposes the relations that continue to operate between international sports organizations and local organizing committees, and provides the chance to reflect on the role of the media in the culture of consumption that surrounds such events. The article aims to show the importance of approaching the study of sport and sports megaevents in consumer culture with emphasis placed on the production of consumption as much as on the meanings or pleasures of consumption.
While presidential inaugurations routinely attract hundreds of thousands or more visitors to Washington, DC, for the quadrennial celebration, the authors' examination of employment from the Current ...Employment Statistics survey from 1939 to the present, and both employment and unemployment from the Current Population Survey from 1977 to the present, finds no noticeable effect from the event on either variable. The residents of DC should not expect an inauguration to make them any richer and the city should not count on any economic benefits generated by the event to cover the significant costs of hosting it.
On 14 December 2008, a worker died in an accident at the same site. What followed was unprecedented: workers at the site struck work and demanded that his body be released and shown to, them. They ...also demanded better working, living and sanitation conditions. This incidence also paved the way for PUDR to conduct a fact finding and speak to some workers at the site. This report attempts to show how the administration is colluding with builders by giving them a free hand vis-Ã -vis the labour laws, and how this has led to the denial of fundamental rights to the poorest citizens of India.
