This paper describes a provisional not fully developed architecture of a thermal feedback system for closed-loop control of robotic arc welding. The architecture is based on an off-line planning ...system for welding and an on-line welding control system, where the off-line planning system builds the reference to be followed by the on-line closed-loop system. The main aim of this architecture is to develop a method by which thermal feedback welding control systems can be designed. This control system is meant for control of welding of thick-walled sheet metal geometries and the system feeds back the temperatures on the surface of the geometry. The temperature is fed back by an infrared CCD-array camera.
New volume reduction systems, which treat most of nuclear power plant radioactive wastes including liquids and sludges, have been developed and they are ready for commercial use. The main feature of ...the system is that mixed wastes having different chemical and physical characteristics can be treated by one unit. This report describes the outline of the system, mathematical simulation models to estimate the operational characteristics of the key components, on-line computer control system using these models, and packaging technique for the long term storage of the wastes.
A model predictive control (MPC) strategy based on a dynamic matrix (DMC) is designed and applied to a wet limestone flue gas desulfurization (WLFGD) pilot plant to evaluate what enhancement in ...control performance can be achieved with respect to a conventional decentralized feedback control strategy. The results reveal that MPC can significantly improve both reference tracking and disturbance rejection. For disturbance rejection, the main control objective in WLFGD plants, selection of tuning parameters and sample time, is of paramount importance due to the fast effect of the main disturbance (inlet SO2 load to the absorber) on the most important controlled variable (outlet flue gas SO2 concentration). The proposed MPC strategy can be easily applied to full-scale WLFGD plants.
Linear quadratic (LQ) bumpless transfer design introduced recently by Turner and Walker gives a very convenient and straightforward computational procedure for the steady-state bumpless transfer ...operator synthesis. It is, however, found to be incapable of providing convergence of the output of the offline controller to that of the online controller in several industrial applications, producing bumps in the plant output in the wake of controller transfer. An examination of this phenomenon reveals that the applications in question are characterized by a significant mismatch, further referred to as controller uncertainty, between the dynamics of the implemented controllers and their models used in the transfer operator computation. To address this problem, while retaining the convenience of the Turner and Walker design, a novel state/output feedback bumpless transfer topology is introduced that employs the nominal state of the offline controller and, through the use of an additional controller/model mismatch compensator, also the offline controller output. A corresponding steady-state bumpless transfer design procedure along with the supporting theory is developed for a large class of systems. The new technique is shown to be capable of eliminating the online/offline controller output tracking errors under significant controller uncertainty, while preserving fast convergence of Turner and Walker design. Due to these features, it is demonstrated to solve a long-standing problem of high-quality steady-state bumpless transfer from the industry standard low-order nonlinear multiloop PID-based controllers to the modern multiinput-multioutput (MIMO) robust controllers in the megawatt/throttle pressure control of a typical coal-fired boiler/turbine unit.
The placement of a minimal set of phasor measurement units (PMUs) so as to make the system measurement model observable, and thereby linear, is investigated. A PMU placed at a bus measures the ...voltage as well as all the current phasors at that bus, requiring the extension of the topological observability theory. In particular, the concept of spanning tree is extended to that of spanning measurement subgraph with an actual or a pseudomeasurement assigned to each of its branches. The minimal PMU set is found through a dual search algorithm which uses both a modified bisecting search and a simulated-annealing-based method. The former fixes the number of PMUs while the latter looks for a placement set that leads to an observable network for a fixed number of PMUs. In order to accelerate the procedure, an initial PMU placement is provided by a graph-theoretic procedure which builds a spanning measurement subgraph according to a depth-first search. From computer simulation results for various test systems it appears that only one fourth to one third of the system buses need to be provided with PMUs in order to make the system observable.< >
Presently, decentralized feedback control is the only control strategy used in wet limestone flue gas desulfurization (WLFGD) plants. Proper tuning of this control strategy is becoming an important ...issue in WLFGD plants because more stringent SO2 regulations have come into force recently. Controllability analysis is a highly valuable tool for proper design of control systems, but it has not been applied to WLFGD plants so far. In this paper a decentralized control strategy is designed and applied to a WLFGD pilot plant taking into account the conclusions of a controllability analysis. The results reveal that good SO2 control in WLFGD plants can be achieved mainly because the main disturbance of the process is well-aligned with the plant and interactions between control loops are beneficial to SO2 control.
This paper is concerned with application of evolutionary programming (EP) to optimal reactive power dispatch and voltage control of power systems. Practical implementation of the EP for global ...optimization problems of large-scale power systems has been considered. The proposed EP method has been evaluated on the IEEE 30-bus system. Simulation results, compared with those obtained using a conventional gradient-based optimization method, are presented to show the potential of application of the proposed method to power system economical operations.< >
