The paper explores the variety of onomastic strategies in the short story Nikola Znamensky by Fyodor Reshetnikov, a follower of the ethnographic movement in the Russian literature of 1860s. It is ...typical for his works to omit the use of first names in the titles (Glumovs, Aunt Oparikh, Gossip Mironikh, Ilyich, Maxya, Yashka) whilst they play an important role in the stories. For example, the Doctor’s story begins with the first name and so it ends. The name suggests that the protagonist (albeit not openly) opposes himself to the official church position. Apart from that, the character himself claims that the name predicts his fate. Having lost the spiritual title, he also refuses the name. Within the text, only ten characters are named, and the naming strategies used in each case are different. The distinguishing factor is the variability of the name forms. This article aims to understand whether this variation affects the way the nature of the character is represented in the story. The analysis shows that the story features six context-driven forms of the name of the story’s main character, Nikola Znamensky. Religious teachers address Nikola by using the full form of the name. The narrator also refers to him as Nikolai. The character himself (and his fellows) tend to use both the full and the “folk” forms of the name (Nikola, Mikola, Mikula). The members of the family use the hypocoristic forms. The names of other characters (from the family circle: brother, sons) are also subject to change: the full form is typical for the speech of the narrator, the derivative diminutive -ka appears in the speech of the priest. The protagonist’s namesake son also has a separate derivative name reference (Nikolai — Kolka) which emphasizes the special role of the title character. The name’s variability thus reflects the main character’s embedding into various social networks and, more importantly, into the “folk” paradigm linking it to the figure of Saint Nicholas. The author concludes that Reshetnikov uses name variability as a characteristic means that adds to the types portrayed in the story.

Badania prowadzono ...na zbiorze 81 nazw miejscowych, w których wystąpiło 39 różnych leksemów nazywających zwierzęta. Najliczniej wystąpiły nazwy ssaków (15), a wśród nich leksem krowa, którego użyto w 6 ojkonimach. Oprócz nazw ssaków były także nazwy ptaków, owadów, ryb, płazów, skorupiaków i zwierząt bezkręgowych (bezkręgowców).

The article deals with Spanish set expressions that include a foreign proper name. The study overviews phraseological units, as well as proverbs and sayings included in the most important Spanish ...lexicographical works. Dealing with an onomastic (onymic) component requires the description of idioms, their origin, meaning and the degree of linguistic actuality. The study of the selected number of set expressions and proverbs has revealed that some proper names may be considered as international precedent onyms (anthroponyms, mythonyms, poetonyms, etc.) This type of proper names may be interpreted as part of the world cultural legacy, since they are present in the onomastic fund of many languages and are considered a sort of linguistic constant formed throughout human history. Spanish national and cultural identity may be illustrated by idioms with a foreign toponym or anthroponym. Generally, those are set expressions and idioms that allude to some historical events and reflect Spanish military and political activities in the world arena, Spanish cultural and linguistic contacts in different periods. The study of idiomatic phrases, their origin and motivation has revealed the key sources to replenish the Spanish phraseological fund, which are world literature, cinema, classical mythology, the Bible, military and political activities. Chronologically, the majority of the analyzed idioms was created in the Middle Ages and the Modern period, however, foreign proper names continue to replenish the Spanish lexis, since there are many expressions and proverbs with a foreign onym that have been created in the recent centuries.
Sústava slovanskej onomastickej terminológie bola publikovaná v roku 1973 a modifikovaná v roku 1983. Sústava slovanskej onomastickej terminológie je jedinečným terminologickým dielom, pretože ...zjednotila onomastickú terminológiu v 12 slovanských jazykoch. V 20. storočí a v podstate ani do súčasnosti nemá ekvivalenty v západoeurópskej onomastike a ani v onomastikách v ostatných častiach sveta. Po roku 1983 sa sústava slovanskej onomastickej terminológie ďalej nemodifikovala, a preto nebol v slovanskej onomastike terminologický vývoj koordinovaný. Od dichotomického členenia oným v sústave slovanskej onomastickej terminológie na bionymum a abionymum sa prechádza k trichotomickému členeniu oným na bionymum, geonymum, chrématonymum, objavuje sa dvojaké terminologické chápanie chrématoným a vzniká nová terminológia, ktorej cieľom je pokryť onymické objekty v spoločnosti medzinárodnými termínmi. Zámerom textu je predstaviť vývoj slovanskej onomastickej terminológie najmä na komplexných terminologických dielach a poukázať na možnosti ďalšieho vývoja.
Abstract This diachronic study investigates Chinese ideological given names (personal names which represent the name-givers’ shared ideas and beliefs) by focusing on historical changes over five time ...periods between 1935 and 2012. Based on an analysis of 21,687 given names, 2,687 (12.4%) of which are ideological names, the study finds that naming practices bear historical imprints in terms of content and syllabic form. The more intensely a society is politicized, the higher the rate of occurrence of ideological given names. The data also illustrate the dynamic that exists in naming practices between conformity and individuality. In this article, we argue that names are like social cards: people play them to serve their ideological needs, as shown by the evolution of naming strategies through different historical periods. The implication is that historical changes can influence the way in which a name can communicate ideological views.

In the summer of 2013 we collected the microtoponyms of Sálvora and its archipelago, within the framework of Proxecto Toponimia de Galicia. The fact it is an island depopulated for nearly half a ...century hampered the process, but precisely because of this exceptionality the results obtained have a special value for both philological and historical studies. This study has two main parts, Methodology and Analysis of toponyms. The former explains how data collection was carried out, what criteria were adopted and what problems were faced. The second part examines inland toponyms of Salvora, maritime toponyms of the surrounding area and local generic words used by informants. The study contributed data pertinent to the patterns of past settlement and organization of the island and the exploration and humanization of the sea. The interest of toponymy for issues beyond the strictly linguistic is reconfirmed.
In this article the authors investigate the toponymical periphrasis, or toponymical metaphors of two Spanish speaking countries: Peru and Panama, and determine various aspects of their static and ...dynamic. The authors examine and systematise toponymical periphrases of Peru and Panama through the prism of the linguistic picture of the world consisting in linguistic-cultural analysis for the reconstruction and typology of stable associations of contemporary Peruvians and Panamanians reflected in the toponymy of their homelands. Approximately ninety place names of Peru and Panama and their periphrasis cited in this article were selected, due to their lingua-cultural, geographical, associative, and commemorative significance for Peruvian and Panamanian people. The historical, linguistic and onomastic approaches, proposed in this research, reveal different mechanisms of metaphorical naming and renaming. The authors evaluate the role of toponymical periphrases in forming professional competences of Russian university students studying Spanish and conclude that knowing toponymical metaphors enriches the professional competences of students in their lingvocreative manifestations and becomes an effective tool in teaching Spanish at Bachelor and Masters levels, contributing to students’ intellectual activities and forming aesthetic values, proper to modern teaching approach.
