In this digital era, data is new oil and artificial intelligence (AI) is new electricity, which is needed in different elements of operations management (OM) such as manufacturing, product ...development, services and supply chain. This study explores the feasibility of AI utilization within an organization on six factors such as job-fit, complexity, long-term consequences, affect towards use, social factors and facilitating conditions for different elements of OM by mining the collective intelligence of experts on Twitter and through academic literature. The study provides guidelines for managers for AI applications in different components of OM and concludes by presenting the limitations of the study along with future research directions.
The growth in Ecommerce has transformed warehouse and distribution centers to mega-fulfilment centers. The focus is increasingly on innovative storage solutions, better tracking mechanisms coupled ...with technology and training. Companies who do not realize this have little chance of surviving (Rachid Fergati, MD Indian subcontinent, UPS). The purpose of this case is to highlight the process, people, and operations improvements undertaken by an Indian e-commerce giant with the help of the research team at the CII School of Logistics for enhanced efficiency and customer service. The researchers spent 50 days onsite (at the company’s warehouse located in Binola) observing the processes, identifying issues, providing solutions, and tracking and recording improvements as per the action research methodology (Reason, 2001). Thus, two-fold objectives were achieved: (a) improved cost efficiency and material handling processes in the warehouse and (b) knowledge building in the strategic operations management area. The case is a representative illustration of how the Indian logistics industry is moving from fragmented, unorganized, and inefficient systems to a more organized, structured sector in an ultra-competitive global space.
► Identifying gaps in disaster operations management literature. ► Evaluation of recent disaster operations management contributions. ► OR/MS applications in disaster operations management.
Potential ...consequences of disasters involve overwhelming economic losses, large affected populations and serious environmental damages. Given these devastating effects, there is an increasing interest in developing measures in order to diminish the possible impact of disasters, which gave rise to the field of disaster operations management (DOM). In this paper we review recent OR/MS research in DOM. Our work is a continuation of a previous review from Altay and Green (2006). Our purpose is to evaluate how OR/MS research in DOM has evolved in the last years and to what extent the gaps identified by Altay and Green (2006) have been covered. Our findings show no drastic changes or developments in the field of OR/MS in DOM since the publication of Altay and Green (2006). Additionally to our comparative analysis, we present an original evaluation about the most common assumptions in recent OR/MS literature in DOM. Based on our findings we provide future research directions in order to make improvements in the areas where lack of research is detected.
This study aims to explore how a global franchisor applies global and local strategies in its Turkish franchisees. McDonald’s is a global franchisor which has a distribution licence agreement with ...Anadolu Group in Turkey. The effect of the agreement is discussed interms of global and local strategies in the fields of Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Marketing Management, Finance Management, and Human Resources Management. In dept interviews were conducted with functional managers of McDonald’s Turkey to find out the approach of the company. According to the findings of the in depth interviews, it is found out that the company applies both global and local strategies in Turkey for decreasing its costs, increasing its efficiency and alligning its strategies with its headquater. However, it focuses on local strategies more than global strategies due to the effect of its local distribution licencee Anadolu Group.
This study reviews the research on planning and scheduling in healthcare published in Production and Operations Management (POM) and other prestigious operations management journals over the past 30 ...years, identifies trending topics, and discusses opportunities for future research. Specifically, we categorize the capacity planning literature into three problem contexts: (a) hospital units and operating rooms, (b) outpatient clinics, and (c) broader healthcare networks. We further classify the scheduling literature into (a) appointment scheduling, (b) surgery and workforce scheduling, and (c) recurring and integrated scheduling, with several subtopics that have attracted attention in the literature. Afterward, we demonstrate the seven emerging trends in healthcare (i.e., collaborative ecosystem and cooperative competition strategy, expanded reach of virtual care, applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare, patient engagement and personalized care, shifting to value‐based care, working toward health equity, and aging populations) and list relevant research opportunities and their related departments of POM journal. We conclude with a call for multidisciplinary perspectives to deliver coherent solutions that incorporate the complex contemporary issues harmoniously.
We use 9 years of dynamic panel data (4,090 observations) to explore how decarbonization moderates the association between a selection of efficiency‐driven shop‐floor initiatives and labor ...productivity. The results are mixed: the relationship between materials efficiency and labor productivity is positively moderated by decarbonization, but the relationship between increases in inventory turnover or the average firm wage as a multiple of average sector wages are negatively moderated by decarbonization. Overall, we find that decarbonization leads to an average drop in sales of 1.8% per worker. This evidence therefore suggests that climate change goals impacting industrial firms might be difficult to accomplish if managers expect to achieve decarbonization for free with current organizational best practices.
This paper is motivated by the widespread availability of AI tools, whose adoption and consequent benefits are still not well understood. As a first step, some critical issues that relate to AI tools ...in general, humans in the context of AI tools, and AI tools in the context of operations management are identified. A discussion of how these issues could hinder employee adoption and use of AI tools is presented. Building on this discussion, the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology is used as a theoretical basis to propose individual characteristics, technology characteristics, environmental characteristics and interventions as viable research directions that could not only contribute to the adoption literature, particularly as it relates to AI tools, but also, if pursued, such research could help organizations positively influence the adoption of AI tools.
This paper aims at examining the trends, challenges and theoretical gaps in the implementation of Healthcare 4.0 (H4.0) based on a scoping review of the literature. For that, we searched journal ...articles in four widely known databases and screened the retrieved articles to obtain a publications' portfolio. Our findings indicate that, despite the recency of the subject, research in H4.0 has been conducted in an interdisciplinary way with a diversified set of applications and functionalities. In terms of its implementation, H4.0 has been more commonly found in hospitals' information flows, especially the ones related to healthcare treatments. The identified implementation trends, however, neglect a more holistic approach for H4.0, which originated three main research directions for this topic. Although identified as a trending topic in the area of healthcare operations management, literature on H4.0 may be viewed as randomly conceived, lacking academic alignment and practical orientation based on a grounded theory, which we aim at providing with the present study.
