Little is known about secondary impairments and overuse problems in patient with acquired or congenital upper limb deficiency.
Our aim was to estimate the frequency of overuse problems in persons ...after unilateral upper limb deficiency and identify the factors relevant for development of these problems.
Cross-sectional study conducted at the University Rehabilitation Institute in Ljubljana.
In total, 65 persons after unilateral upper limb deficiency who had visited our subspecialist outpatient clinic during the 2011-2013 period (excluding those with other possible medical causes of overuse-type problems) were interviewed about the frequency, duration and severity of neck, elbow and shoulder pain and the presence of carpal tunnel syndrome and filled in the Orthotics and Prosthetics User Survey-Upper Extremity Functional Status questionnaire.
The most frequent problem was carpal tunnel syndrome, followed by shoulder pain, neck pain and elbow pain. No statistically significant association of deficiency level, cause of deficiency, time since deficiency, extent of daily prosthesis use or type of prosthesis with frequency or severity of pain or number of problems was found. The presence of carpal tunnel syndrome decreased from wearing no prosthesis through aesthetic and body-powered to myoelectric prosthesis (p = 0.014).
Factors contributing to overuse problems after upper limb deficiency are not straightforward, so a large multicentric study is warranted.

Background: Along with the growth of science and technology, the orthotics and prosthetics (O and P) have been changing since the past as a dynamic profession and the role of a specialist in O and P ...has also undergone a change due to needs of society and the growth of technologies. To illustrate the future direction of an educational system, it is necessary to have a trend analysis of what weaknesses and strengths have existed in the past and the present. Materials and Methods: In this analysis, two methods of scoping review and interview were conducted. For the purpose of scoping review, database searches of PubMed, ERIC, SID, and Web of Science in combination with a search on websites of key organizations, including universities, World Health Organization, and International Society of O and P were conducted. Results: Various trends have been formed from different aspects in the health education system due to multifaceted nature of the O and P. The areas include health and education services, technology, curriculum, educational programs, and accreditation. Conclusion: The debate on monitoring and evaluation of O and P educational systems has been also developed along with the progress made in the training of O and P. The training of individuals by setting minimum standards leads to a professional competency in line and is considered as other issues arisen in the field of education; however, in recent years, improvements in this field have not been significant.
Abstract Background Orthotics and Prosthetics User's Survey (OPUS) was developed to measure patient satisfaction in Prosthetic and Orthotic (P&O) field. Objective To translate the satisfaction ...assessment module of OPUS (OPUS-SM) into Persian language (Persian OPUS-SM) and investigate its psychometric properties. Methods For cross-cultural adaptation of the OPUS-SM, the guideline suggested by the World Health Organization was recruited. A sample of 116 Persian-speaking people who received P&O devices and services, participated in this study. During the first session, participants filled out the Persian OPUS-SM and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) regarding their satisfaction from delivered devices and services. Drawing from the above sample of 116 participants, 41 participants retook the Persian OPUS-SM 5–7 days after their first time. The results of the first and second administration sessions were analyzed to assess internal consistency, test-retest reliability, item-subscale correlation, minimal detectable change, floor and ceiling effects, criterion validity, and dimensionality of the Persian OPUS-SM. Results The Cronbach's alphas of the Persian OPUS-SM were 0.71 and 0.89 for device and service satisfaction subscales, respectively. The intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.76 and 0.90 for device and service satisfaction subscales, respectively. The SEM and MDC for device satisfaction were 6.21 and ±17.21, respectively. The SEM and MDC for service satisfaction were 2.25 and ±6.22, respectively. There was a strong correlation between VAS and satisfaction subscales of the Persian OPUS-SM. Dimensionality assessment revealed that Persian OPUS-SM is a unidimensional measure. Conclusions The adapted and translated Persian OPUS-SM is a reliable and validated measure.
Medical sciences effects on people's health; therefore, it is necessary to identify all threats, opportunities, and challenges in its policy and planning particularly in the education field. The ...orthotics and prosthetics (O and P) field of study has great importance alongside other rehabilitation sciences due to its preventive status, therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the role of key factors and, subsequently, identifying uncertainties to compile and plot a bright and planned future for O and P education system.
At first, the key factors seemed to be influential improving the education and training quality of O and P students, were identified, weighted and ranked. All these steps were based on documentations and opinions of elites and deans of O and P through a semi-structured interview. Then, the final list of key factors and extracted drivers was placed and analyzed in cross-impact matrix by MicMac software.
Among the initial list of key factors and drivers which identified 45 elements; 19 key factors and drivers scored the highest. Among 238 evaluable relationships in the cross-impact matrix, 123 relationships (51.6% of total matrix volume) are 0, which means that factors do not affect each other and are not affected either. Two key factors were identified as critical uncertainties out of 19 key factors.
Achieving education development without a dynamic and active planning system is not possible. "Community-based education" and "government financial support" were identified as critical uncertainties of O and P future education system.

Purpose. The difficulty of recording service history of rehabilitation devices makes it impractical for prescribing centres to monitor treatment effectively, or implement maintenance and replacement ...policies that permit safety and economic viability to be fully complementary. An approach to providing such a facility has been investigated, so that specified treatment can be monitored or device replacement matched to the functional activity of the patient.
Methods. A two-channel data logger has been developed that can record, over periods in excess of 12 months, information in an event-monitoring channel; and in the second channel a varying analogue signal at the time an event occurs. In addition a downloading interface allows data to be transferred and then processed in a personal computer during a routine patient visit.
Results. Laboratory testing demonstrated that the system recorded events accurately. Field trials verified a battery life exceeding 12 months for continuous routine monitoring of twice daily orthosis application in the event logging channel. The analogue channel was tested by applying known signals to the logger at the time events were monitored, and comparing the output to the input signal.
Outcome. The feasibility of routinely monitoring the use of rehabilitation devices was successfully demonstrated and production development is now being undertaken.
