Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) is one of the main reasons for referral to a pediatric rheumatologist and is the third most common cause of chronic pain in children and adolescents. Causes of CMP ...include amplified musculoskeletal pain, benign limb pain of childhood, hypermobility, overuse syndromes, and back pain. CMP can negatively affect physical, social, academic, and psychological function so it is essential that clinicians know how to diagnose and treat these conditions. This article provides an overview of the epidemiology and impact of CMP, the steps in a comprehensive pain assessment, and the management of the most common CMPs.
The aim of this study was to analyze the cases of diagnosed occupational disease (OD) in the Occupational Medicine of the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health Ltd. for a period 2010 ...to 2014. A review of archived data and voluntary telephone survey for collecting data about the employment status of patients after diagnosed OD were performed. In the period 2010 to 2014, OD was diagnosed in 55 patients. The most often diagnosed were skin OD (N=19), arm overuse syndromes (N=17), asthma and rhinitis (N=10). The most common skin OD was allergic contact dermatitis (N=15)/ most frequently found in hairdressers (N=5). Carpal tunnel sindrome was the most common overuse syndrome (N=15), most frequently found in textile workers (N=5). Respiratory disorders were most common in health care workers (N=3). Telephone survey was answered by 46 patients. After the diagnosed OD, 21 (46%) patients were employed by the same or another employer: the change of workplace occurred in 14 (30%) patients, in 1 case after retraining, while 7 (15%) patients are still working at the same workplace. Twelve (26%) patients were retired after diagnosed OD: 11 with disability pension or early retirement. Thirteen (28%) patients are unemployed: 11 got fired after diagnosed OD, and the retraining was done in 3 cases. The results indicate an inadequate rehabilitation of workers with diagnosed OD. The change of workplace occurred in only 30% of patients, and retraining in only 4 (9%) cases. The majority of patients are unemployed, retired early or employed at the same workplace that caused OD.
Pain and injuries are considered a common problem among elite athletes and recreational lifters performing the squat, bench press and deadlift. Since all three lifts engage multiple joints and expose ...the lifters’ bodies to high physical demands often several times a week, it has been suggested that their injuries might be related to the excessively heavy loads, the large range of motion during the exercises, insufficient resting times between training sessions and/or faulty lifting technique. However, no previous article has summarised what is known about specific injuries and the injury aetiology associated with the three lifts. Thus, the aim of this narrative review was to summarise what is known about the relationships between the powerlifting exercises and the specific injuries or movement impairments that are common among lifters and recreationally active individuals.

The purpose of this study was to conduct an electromyographic analysis (EMG) comparing a right angle handle paint applicator with a commonly used, equal quality standard handle paint brush.
A randomized cross over repeated measures design was implemented where 30 volunteers were randomly given a paint brush handle type while muscle activity (EMG) was recorded from eight upper limb muscles groups. Subjects were their own controls returning within one week to perform the same painting activity with the other paint brush handle type. ANOVA with repeated measures was used to analyze the EMG data among muscles between the two painting trials.
EMG analysis revealed that there was no difference in EMG activity or median frequency between the two types of paint brush handles in the eight muscles studied (p > 0.05).
A right angle handle has no added ergonomic advantage in modifying muscle activity or decreasing muscle fatigue over a commonly used standard handle paint brush in people without injury. It was suggested that the right angle style brush may not prevent OOSs from occurring, although there still could be a decrease risk of injury based on the posture used when gripping the brush handle. It must be emphasized, however, that this study's results cannot be extrapolated to people who already have an OOS and need a device to prevent further injury and pain. Further study is needed.
•A right angle handle paint brush has no added ergonomic advantage over a standard type handled brush in modifying muscle activity.•A right angle handle paint brush handle has no added benefit in reducing muscle fatigue.•Individuals have a preferred painting technique (ie. grip) that they when painting and changing the shape of the brush handle does not affect it despite handle design; explicit instruction may be required to reap benefits of ergonomic design.

Occupational diseases (ODs) often have a chronic, progressive course, resulting in reduced work capacity and quality of life, prolonged sick leaves, unemployment, early retirements, and disability ...claims. The aim of this retrospective study was to see how diagnosed ODs affected the employment of 95 Croatian workers between 2005 and 2014. To do that, we reviewed archived data and made a telephone survey. The lowest age at which an OD was diagnosed was 20 years in women and 22 in men, while the shortest duration of work before OD diagnosis was one year for both genders. The most common ODs were overuse syndromes on the arms, carpal tunnel syndrome in particular, diagnosed mostly in textile and office workers. Of the 95 participants, 12 lost their jobs since the OD diagnosis, 46 retired, and 37 continued to work. Significantly more participants became unemployed after OD diagnosis in the period 2010-2014 than 2005-2009 (9 out of 43, 21 %, vs. 3 out of 52, 6 %, P<0.05). Only five participants were included in an occupational rehabilitation programme. Our findings warn against the deterioration in care for workers diagnosed with OD in Croatia.

Abstract Background Hypothenar hammer syndrome is a rare vascular overuse syndrome characterized by post-traumatic vascular insufficiency of the hand from repetitive compression over the hypothenar ...eminence. Patients with occupations predisposing to repetitive use of the hypothenar eminence as a tool are at high risk. Repetitive trauma compresses a superficial segment of the ulnar artery against the hook of hamate as it exits Guyon’s canal, damaging the intimal layer of the artery and causing vasospasm, platelet aggregation, and thrombus formation, leading to pain and paresthesias that eventually progress to claudication and ischemia. Objective The main objectives of this case report are to describe a representative example of hypothenar hammer syndrome and review common aspects of this clinical entity. Case Report We describe the case of a 71-year-old man working as a car mechanic who presented with right-hand pain of several months’ duration that was noted to have swelling and pain over the hypothenar eminence with associated paresthesias of the fifth digit. Duplex ultrasound imaging confirmed the presence of a dilated ulnar artery with arterial thrombus characteristic of hypothenar hammer syndrome. Conservative treatment, including cessation of activities that utilize the hypothenar region, was instituted with improvement in symptoms on follow-up evaluation. Conclusions This case report illustrates a rare clinical condition that with prompt and early identification by Emergency Physicians can prevent significant morbidity and progression of disease. The epidemiology, clinical features, and diagnosis are discussed along with a review of the relevant literature regarding available treatment options.
