The effect of body condition score and body weight of Sanjabi ewes on immune system, productive and reproductive performance Total 80 Sanjabi ewes (2-5 years old and 50-85 weight domain) were ...selected in animal unit of Mehregan farm. The ewes were divided to 4 treatment groups according to body condition score of (2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 ≤). Blood samples were collected from non-pregnant ewes, then after mating, two weeks before expected lambing and at lambing day. Blood samples of newborn lambs were also taken from the jugular vein at birth and 7 days of age. The reproductive parameters such as number of lambs born per lambing, kg of lambs born per ewes mating, pregnancy period and lamb birth weight were determined. Some blood metabolites such as glucose, total protein, albumin and globulin were determined. The white blood cell and differential leukocyte counts were also measured. The result of this experiment indicated that BCS = 3 had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on the kg lambs born per ewes. Ewes with BCS = 3 had a better performance in the percentage of lambs born per ewes at mating, while the lambing rate reduced in ewes with BCS of 3.5 or more. Birth weight of lambs was significantly affected by BCS of their ewes (P < 0.05). There was a significant effect of BCS on plasma FSH concentration in ewes with BCS more than 3 but no significant difference was seen in blood metabolite in this study. Colostrum productions and the lamb birth weights were affected by body condition score of ewes. The white blood cell counts, neutrophils and lymphocytes counts did not change between ewes and lambs. It is concluded that BCS had a significant effect on kg lambs born per ewes, birth weight of lambs, lambs weaning weight and colostrum productions (P < 0.05) and the score of 3 at mating time could optimize profitability of Sanjabi ewes.
Phenotypic variation present in a population arises due to genotypic and environmental effects, and the magnitude of phenotypic variability differs under different environmental conditions, ...therefore, the purpose of this study was to objectively describe the linear type traits of extensively managed mature indigenous goats of Southern Nigeria and to predict body weight from their orthogonal shape characters using principal component analysis. Body weight and four body measurements namely, height at withers, neck length, body length and heart girth were measured in 265 randomly selected West African Dwarf (WAD) and Red Sokoto (RS) goats of both sexes. RS goats had significantly (P < 0.05) higher morphological traits compared to their WAD counterparts. Sexual dimorphism was observed in all the traits with higher values recorded for males. Phenotypic correlations among body weight and biometric traits were positive and highly significant (r = 0.76-0.91 versus 0.82-0.97 and 0.66-0.94 versus 0.83-0.91 for WAD and RS female and male goats, respectively). In the varimax rotated principal component factor analysis, two factors were extracted for each sex of the two breeds, although with varying degrees of factor loadings. The principal component based regression models, which are preferable for selecting animals for optimal balance, accounted for 89.00 and 96.00% as well as 81.00 and 91.00% of the variation in body weight of female and male WAD and RS goats, respectively. The information obtained could be useful in designing appropriate management, selection and breeding programmes for utilization of goat genetic resources.
Fenotipska variabilnost v populaciji je pogojena z delovanjem genetskih in okoljskih dejavnikov. Ker je obseg fenotipske variabilnosti različen v različnih okoljih, smo skušali v tej študiji objektivno predstaviti linearne eksterierne lastnosti ekstenzivno vzrejanih avtohtonih koz v južni Nigeriji in z analizo glavnih komponent napovedati telesno maso na osnovi lastnosti, ki opredeljujejo njihovo telesno obliko. Izmerili smo telesno maso in štiri telesne mere (višina v vihru, dolžina vratu, dolžina trupa in obseg prsi) pri 265 naključno izbranih zahodno afriških pritlikavih kozah (West African Dwarf, WAD) in rdečih sokoto kozah (Red Sokoto, RS) obeh spolov. Vrednosti za merjene lastnosti so bile pri RS kozah statistično značilno (p < 0,05) večje kot pri WAD kozah. Spolni dimorfizem smo zabeležili pri vseh lastnostih, z večjimi vrednostmi za samce. Fenotipske korelacije med telesno maso in biometričnimi lastnostmi so bile pozitivne in statistično visoko značilne (r = 0,76-0,91 in 0,82-0.97 ter 0,66-0,94 in 0,83-0,91 za WAD in RS živali ženskega ter moškega spola). S faktorsko analizo z Varimax rotacijo smo za vsako od obeh pasem in vsak spol dobili po dva faktorja. Regresijski modeli, ki temeljijo na analizi glavnih komponent in so primerni za selekcijo živali, so pojasnili 89,00 in 96,00 %, ter 81,00 in 91,00 % variance telesne teže ženskih in moških živali pasem WAD in RS. Zbrane informacije bodo uporabne pri upravljanju, selekciji in načrtovanju rejskih programov za boljše izkoriščanje genskih virov pri kozah.
In the nineteenth and early twentieth century the Medžimurje horse played an important role as a draft and working horse in the river Mura region. Nowadays, this area is split between Hungary, ...Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. In the frame of the project "Management of traditional transboundary breeds on example of a nearly forgotten breed the Murinsulaner", we collected data for cold blooded horses similar to the Medžimurje horse. Horses of this type do not exist in Austria anymore, in Croatia they were registered as an authothonous breed »Medjimurje horse«, and in Slovenia and Hungary this horse has a special section in the stud book for cold blooded horses as a Medžimurje type of horse. The Slovenian part of the population of the Medžimurje horse is quite heterogeneous regarding body measures. With respect to the scoring system used in the above mentioned project, the majority of scored animals were classified as »desired« or »satisfactory«. In order to further develop or to preserve this type of horse or to form a consolidated breed we would have to make a breeding program which would prevent mating among related animals and to cooperate with neighbouring countries in the field of breeding and selection. The only hope to preserve this type of horse on the long term in the region is by using it as a tourist attraction for carriage riding and/or as a draft horse in agriculture in marginal regions.
Medžimurski konj je imel pomembno vlogo pri transportu in delu v devetnajstem in v začetku dvajsetega stoletja na področju ob Muri. Danes je to področje razdeljeno med Madžarsko, Avstrijo, Slovenijo in Hrvaško. V okviru projekta "Upravljanje tradicionalnih čezmejnih pasem na primeru skoraj pozabljene pasme, medžimurski konj", smo zbrali podatke o hladnokrvnih konjih, ki so v tipu medžimurskega konja. V Avstriji takih konj ni več, na Hrvaškem so konje tega tipa registrirali kot avtohtono pasmo medjimurski konj, na Madžarskem in v Sloveniji pa se ti konji vodijo kot poseben oddelek (medžimurski tip) rodovniške knjige za hladnokrvne konje. Slovenski del populacije v tipu medžimurskega konja je glede na telesne mere precej neizenačen. Upoštevaje sistem ocenjevanja, ki je bil razvit v okviru omenjenega projekta, večina ocenjenih živali sodi v t.i. razred zaželeno oz. zadovoljivo. Za razvoj in ohranitev tega tipa konja oz. formiranje pasme, bo potrebno izdelati rejski program, ki bo zagotavljal preprečevanje parjenja v sorodstvu in razviti sodelovanje s sosednjimi državami na področju reje in selekcije tega tipa konj. Ne nazadnje je dolgoročen obstoj tega tipa konja mogoče zagotoviti le z njegovo uporabo za delo v kmetijstvu in v turizmu.
The longevity of Slovenian Holstein population was analysed using survival analysis with a Weibull proportional hazard model. Data spanned the period between January 1991 and January 2010 for 116,200 ...cows from 3,891 herds. Longevity was described as the length of productive life - from first calving till culling or censoring. Records above the sixth lactation were censored to partially avoid preferential treatment. Statistical model included the effect of age at first calving, stage of lactation within parity, yearly herd size deviation, season defined as year, herd, and sire-maternal grandsire (mgs). Some effects had time varying covariates, which lead to 1,839,307 or on average 16 elementary records per cow. Herd and sire-maternal grandsire effects were modelled hierarchically. Pedigree for sires and maternal grandsires included 2,284 entries. Estimated variance between herds was 0.12, while between sire variance was 0.04. Heritability was evaluated at 0.14. Genetic trend for sires was unfavourable, but not significant. A further research is needed to define the required number of daughters per sire and the dynamics of genetic evaluation for sires whose majority of daughters still have censored records.
Za analizo dolgoživosti smo pri slovenski črno-beli populaciji govedi uporabili metodologijo analize preživetja in Weibullov model sorazmernih ogroženosti. V analizo smo vključili podatke 116.200 krav iz 3.891 čred skozi obdobje od januarja 1991 do januarja 2010. Dolgoživost je bila predstavljena kot doba produktivnega življenja, ki je definirana kot število od prve telitve do izločitve ali do datuma zajema podatkov za živali, ki so na ta datum bile še žive. Šesto in kasnejše laktacije smo okrnili na konec šeste laktacije, da smo omilili precenjenost boljših živali. V statistični model smo vključili vpliv starosti ob prvi telitvi, stadija laktacije ločeno za vsako zaporedno laktacijo, spreminjanje velikosti črede med leti, leto telitve, čredo, očeta in materinega očeta. Ravni nekaterih vplivov so časovno spremenljivi, kar povzroči, da smo v analizi obravnavali 1.839.307 zapisov ali povprečno 16 osnovnih zapisov na kravo. Čreda in vpliv očeta z materinim očetom sta bila v model vključena hierarhično. Rodovnik za očete in materine očete je obsegal 2.284 zapisov. Ocenjena varianca za vpliv črede je znašala 0,12, medtem ko je ocena variance med očeti znašala 0,04. Dednostni delež je bil ocenjen na 0,14. Genetski trend ima negativno smer, a ni statistično značilen. Potrebne bodo nadaljnje raziskave, da bomo določili zadostno število hčera po biku in dinamiko obračunov plemenskih vrednosti za bike, ki imajo večino hčera še v fazi prireje.
The study aimed at examining morphometric differentiation in two Nigerian breeds of cattle using multifactorial discriminant analyses. Ten morphological traits (withers height, rump height, chest ...circumference, body length, face length, tail length, rump length, head width, rump width and shoulder width) of 224 Bunaji and 87 Sokoto Gudali cattle were measured. The animals, which were aged 2.5-3.6 years, were subjected to extensive management system. The linear type traits of Sokoto Gudali cattle were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those of their Bunaji counterparts, with the exception of body length and face length respectively. The stepwise discriminant analysis gave a better resolution as only three variables, rump width, withers height and face length were more discriminating in separating the two cattle breeds. The Mahalanobis distance (7.19) between the two cattle populations was high and significant, which is an indication that they belong to genetically different groups. This was complemented by the result of the Nearest Neighbour Discriminant Analysis, where 85.48% of Bunaji cattle were classified into their source population while 96.55% of their Sokoto Gudali counterparts were correctly assigned into their source genetic group. The present phenotypic information will be the basis for the establishment of further characterization, conservation and selection strategies for the two Nigerian breeds of cattle.
V študiji smo z multivariatno diskriminantno analizo proučevali morfometrične razlike med dvema nigerijskima pasmama goveda. Merili smo deset morfoloških lastnosti (višina vihra, višina trupa, obseg prsi, dolžina telesa, dolžina glave, dolžina repa, dolžina trupa, širina glave, širina trupa in širina pleč) pri 224 živalih pasme "Bunaji" in 87 živalih pasme "Sokoto Gudali". Živali so bile v ekstenzivni reji, stare med 2,5 ter 3,6 leti. Izmerjene vrednosti za linearne lastnosti živali pasme "Sokoto Gudali" so bile statistično značilno večje (P < 0,05) kot pri živalih pasme "Bunaji", izjema sta bila le dolžina telesa in dolžina glave. Za doseganje boljše resolucije smo uporabili postopno diskriminantno analizo, ker so le tri spremenljivke, širina telesa, višina vihra in dolžina glave, omogočile zanesljivo ločevanje obeh pasem. Mahalanobijeva distanca (7,19) med obema pasmama je bila visoko statistično značilna, kar nakazuje, da populaciji pripadata različnim pasemskim skupinam. Te rezultate potrjuje tudi diskriminantna analiza najbližjih sosedov, kjer je bilo 85,48% "Bunaji" goveda razvrščenega v izvorno populacijo, medtem, ko je bil ta odstotek pri "Sokoto Gudali" pasmi še višji (96,55). Tako pridobljene fenotipske informacije bomo uporabili za še natančnejši opis, zaščito in oblikovanje rejske strategije obeh nigerijskih pasem goveda.
