Where previous studies supported the effect of the contextual property of Question Under Discussion (QUD) and focus on the scalar implicature of or, this paper presents two experiments that replicate ...this effect with the scalar term most. Both experiments show that, while story and target sentence are kept constant, more scalar implicatures are calculated when the scalar term is in the focus (new information) part of the sentence. In the experiments, the focus is manipulated by an explicit QUD. It is shown that the effect also holds for sentential answers to yes/no-questions, and might even extend to scalar implicatures in questions themselves.

Uobičajeno se smatra kako jezik služi za opisivanje misli, osjećaja, predmeta, činjenica ili stanjastvari te prenošenje tih informacija drugima. To je poimanje prevladavalo kroz cijelu tradiciju,a ...svojevrsnu je kulminaciju svakako doživjelo u vrijeme logičkog pozitivizma, odnosno uprvim desetljećima 20. stoljeća. Činjenica da se jezik ne ograničava samo na to tek je nedavnoistraživačima jezika upala u oči. Iako su poneki filozofi, a osobito „kasni“ Wittgenstein, većukazivali na tu uporabnu (praksa, pragmatika) stranu jezika, najsnažniji doprinos pragmatičnojteoriji jezika svakako dolazi od Johna Langshaw Austina. U ovomu radu analiziramo njegovdoprinos pitanju funkcija jezika, a koji se ističe osobito uvidom u to da se jezikom također možei nešto činiti. Dapače, Austin na koncu uviđa da se zapravo jezikom uvijek nešto i čini, jer svakarečenica osim značenja (u uobičajenom, širem smislu), također posjeduje i određenu snagu kojomutječe na slušatelja, i to bilo da ga potiče, savjetuje, upozorava, preporuča, prijeti mu, obećavaili sl.
Argumentacija je pojmovana kot proces, v katerem tvorcu uspe ali ne uspe pridobiti naslovnika, da sprejme argumente, posledično sprejme tudi sklepe in vse, kar iz predpostavljenega izhaja. S stališča ...besediloslovja so srgumenti sredstva racionalnega prepričevanja, po drugi strani pa so argumenti lahko tudi sredstva za manipulacijo, in kot taki niso izpostavljeni, pač pa predpostavljeni s stilistično izbiro izrazja ter z retoričnimi taktirkami in strategijo.

This 1999 textbook investigates definiteness both from a comparative and a theoretical point of view, showing how languages express definiteness and what definiteness is. It surveys a large number of ...languages to discover the range of variation in relation to definiteness and related grammatical phenomena, such as demonstratives, possessives and personal pronouns. It outlines work done on the nature of definiteness in semantics, pragmatics and syntax, and develops an account on which definiteness is a grammatical category represented in syntax as a functional head (the widely discussed D). Consideration is also given to the origins and evolution of definite articles in the light of the comparative and theoretical findings. Among the claims advanced are that definiteness does not occur in all languages, though the pragmatic concept which it grammaticalizes probably does.
Tanulmányomban egy, a magyar egyet nem értést és a nyelvi udvariasságot/udvariatlanságot vizsgáló empirikus kutatás eredményeit mutatom be. Vizsgálatom fókuszában az alábbi két kutatási kérdés állt: ...(1) Hogyan értelmezik a nyelvi udvariasság/udvariatlanság fogalmát a magyar nyelvhasználók, azaz miként határozható meg az „elsődleges udvariasság/udvariatlanság”? (2) Hogyan befolyásolja az egyet nem értés kifejezésének in/direktsége az adott megnyilatkozás megítélését az udvariasság szempontjából? Kutatásomat három kérdőív segítségével végeztem 93 magyar egyetemi hallgató megkérdezésével. Az udvariasság/udvariatlanság fogalomértelmezését egy szabad és egy kötött asszociációs feladattal végeztem, a második kutatási kérdésre pedig egy Likert-skálán mért attitűd teszttel kerestem a választ. Az eredmények azt mutatják, hogy a kutatás adatközlői a nyelvi udvariasságot/udvariatlanságot elsősorban a tiszteletadással, a konvencionálisan udvarias nyelvi elemek és a káromkodás használatával/mellőzésével, az interakciós normák betartásával/megszegésével, illetve a megfelelő/nem megfelelő regiszter alkalmazásával azonosították. Összességében elmondható, hogy a direkt stratégiákkal kifejezett egyet nem értést a kutatás résztvevői udvariatlanabbnak ítélték meg, mint az indirekt egyet nem értési formákat, azonban nem jelenthető ki, hogy egységes lenne az udvariasság/udvariatlanság fokának a megítélése egy adott kategórián vagy stratégiatípuson belül.
